Do you ever think about improving yourself? Most of us do. We want to become smarter, cooler, funnier, thinner, richer, happier.

But what truly creates happiness? The Baha’i teachings say that all true happiness, instead of coming from the material world, begins in the spiritual kingdom:

…the trials which beset our every step, all our sorrow, pain, shame and grief, are born in the world of matter; whereas the spiritual Kingdom never causes sadness. A man living with his thoughts in this Kingdom knows perpetual joy. The ills all flesh is heir to do not pass him by, but they only touch the surface of his life, the depths are calm and serene. – Abdu’l-Baha, Paris Talks, p. 109.

We all know that we should develop positive spiritual attributes. We want to be trustworthy, dependable, kind, generous, loving, etc. Likewise, we try not to give in to our negative tendencies, which we all have. But what do we consider negative? Greed, jealousy, impatience, hatred and dishonesty quickly come to mind. Now let’s add one to the list that you may not have thought of: backbiting. That onerous and hurtful habit—gossiping about and speaking ill of others behind their backs—should rise to the top of the list of characteristics to avoid. Baha’u’llah says:

…regard backbiting as grievous error, and keep… aloof from its dominion, inasmuch as backbiting quencheth the light of the heart, and extinguisheth the life of the soul. – Gleanings from the Writings of Baha’u’llah, p. 265.

Based on the above quotation plus several others, Diane Iverson, Ronald Tomanio, and Phyllis Ring, in their recently published book With Thine Own Eyes — Why Imitate the Past When We Can Investigate Reality, liken backbiting to spiritual murder. Abdu’l-Baha calls it the “worst human quality:”

How blessed are these aims, especially the prevention of backbiting! I hope that you may become confirmed therein, because the worst human quality and the most great sin is backbiting; more especially when it emanates from the tongues of the believers of God. – Abdu’l-Baha, Star of the West, Volume 3, p. 202.

Overcoming backbiting and gossip, once they’re a part of our character, can be a very difficult task. We may start out chatting with friends when an absent third party gets mentioned in the conversation. Perhaps someone had an upsetting experience with that individual, and the memory continues to bother him or her. They may seek validation for their feelings and thus feel a need to air the grievance. We either listen and say we understand how the perceived injustice would bother them, or worse, we add to the conversation something from our own dealings with the absent person under discussion. The conversation initially seems harmless, private and confidential—but then the absent third party hears about it, which means feelings are hurt and friendships permanently ruined. What can we do to change this harmful dynamic?

We can steer the conversation to another topic. We can state that we don’t wish to talk about someone behind their back. We can insert something positive about that individual. We can leave.

When we’re upset with someone, or simply one of their actions, the Baha’i teachings tell us that rather than expose the faults of others, we should instead ignore them and concentrate on their positive traits:

If ye become aware of a sin committed by another, conceal it, that God may conceal your own sin. – Baha’u’llah, Summons of the Lord of Hosts, p. 79.

Whenever you recognize the fault of another, think of yourself: What are my imperfections?-and try to remove them. Do this whenever you are tried through the words or deeds of others. Thus you will grow, become more perfect. You will overcome self, you will not even have time to think of the faults of others. – Abdu’l-Baha, Star of the West, Volume 5, p. 138.

The Baha’i writings warn us:

Breathe not the sins of others so long as thou art thyself a sinner. Shouldst thou transgress this command, accursed wouldst thou be, and to this I bear witness. – Baha’u’llah, The Hidden Words, p. 10.

The authors of With Thine Own Eyes suggest that:

The challenge is to make a transition from a culture of criticism to a culture of encouragement without stopping at some illusory midpoint of silence. It is not enough to be silent and refrain from criticism. We must look carefully for those sometimes hard-to-notice small triumphs of the human spirit, acknowledge them… and demonstrate… that we notice and are appreciative of what they have to offer.

If we can each work towards changing our own behavior, we’ll eventually change our thinking and a conscious, continuing effort won’t be necessary; it will become a natural way of being. As we change ourselves, we influence change in others. This should encourage us to strive to keep life spiritual, uplifting and positive.

Understanding Anger

Amidst the tapestry of human emotions, anger emerges as a primal and potent force, possessing the potential to shape actions and reactions in profound ways. Delving into the core of this complex emotion, we uncover a multifaceted spectrum that ranges from incensed frustration to the simmering intensity of rage. At its heart, anger is an emotional response triggered by a myriad of stimuli, often rooted in perceived threats, injustices, or unmet expectations. This emotional combustion ignites a series of physiological and psychological reactions, leading to a cascade of consequences that can leave an indelible mark on both individuals and their surroundings.

Definition and Characteristics

In its essence, anger is an emotional state characterized by heightened arousal, often accompanied by feelings of hostility, resentment, and agitation. This emotional state can manifest as a visceral reaction to external events or internal ruminations. It’s a fundamental human experience that transcends cultural and societal boundaries, revealing the intricate connection between mind and body. The physiological response to anger is striking: elevated heart rate, increased blood pressure, and a surge of stress hormones coursing through veins. It’s an evolutionary adaptation designed to prepare individuals for potential threats or challenges, an ancient survival mechanism that once ensured our ancestors’ immediate response to danger.

Causes of Anger

The triggers of anger are as diverse as human experiences themselves. From the microcosms of personal relationships to the macrocosms of societal dynamics, anger finds its roots in a multitude of sources. Unmet expectations, perceived injustices, betrayal, and even frustration in the face of obstacles can all kindle the flames of anger. Unresolved conflicts, whether within the realm of family, work, or wider social circles, can act as smoldering embers, waiting for a gust of emotional wind to ignite them into a full-blown blaze. Additionally, the fast-paced modern world, with its demands and pressures, contributes its fair share to the tinderbox of anger. The digital age, for instance, brings with it a unique set of stressors, from online conflicts to the relentless bombardment of information.

Physical and Mental Effects

The effects of anger, both on the physical and mental planes, are undeniably far-reaching. Beyond the initial surge of heightened physiological responses lies a landscape of potential repercussions. Prolonged and unmanaged anger can lead to chronic stress, which, in turn, can contribute to a host of health issues, including cardiovascular problems, weakened immune systems, and even mental health challenges. Moreover, anger’s impact on cognition cannot be understated. It can cloud judgment, impair decision-making, and hinder effective communication. Relationships, often the most intricate tapestries of human interaction, can fray under the weight of unbridled anger, with trust eroding and emotional connections fraying.

Navigating the tumultuous terrain of anger requires a delicate interplay of self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and proactive coping mechanisms. As we delve further into this exploration, we’ll uncover strategies to transform anger from a potentially destructive force into a catalyst for personal growth, resilience, and, ultimately, productivity.

Stay tuned for the next segment, where we delve into the profound connection between anger and productivity, and unveil actionable techniques to channel this potent emotion into positive outcomes.

The Link Between Anger and Productivity

In the intricate dance of human emotions, anger emerges as a dynamic force that possesses the power to both disrupt and inspire. As we explore the nuanced interplay between anger and productivity, we unveil a complex relationship that can shape the course of individual endeavors and collective achievements. Anchored in the realms of psychology, neuroscience, and personal experience, the connection between these seemingly disparate elements comes to light with a clarity that offers insights into enhancing our capacity for positive transformation.

Negative Effects of Uncontrolled Anger

When anger runs rampant, its corrosive effects can leave an indelible mark on various facets of our lives, impeding our journey toward productivity and success. At the forefront of these adverse outcomes lies impaired decision-making, a consequence driven by the tumultuous emotions that anger stirs. When the mind is clouded by the haze of rage or frustration, the ability to make rational choices becomes compromised. The clarity necessary for evaluating options, anticipating consequences, and selecting optimal pathways is obscured, potentially leading to suboptimal outcomes that ripple through personal and professional spheres.

Furthermore, the tendrils of uncontrolled anger have the potential to strain relationships, unraveling the intricate threads of connection that bind individuals together. Anger, when unchecked, can give rise to words spoken in haste, actions laced with hostility, and an overall atmosphere of discord that erodes trust and intimacy. Whether in familial bonds, workplace dynamics, or broader social interactions, the fallout from strained relationships can hinder collaboration, diminish morale, and detract from the synergy required for collective achievements.

The toll that unchecked anger exacts isn’t confined to emotional realms alone—it takes a toll on our physical well-being as well. The physiological repercussions of sustained anger are well-documented, with research highlighting its link to increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, and heightened stress hormone levels. Over time, this chronic physiological arousal can contribute to a range of health concerns, from cardiovascular issues to compromised immune function. The interplay between mental and physical health is undeniable, and the impact of unchecked anger serves as a stark reminder of the intricate connection between our emotional state and our overall well-being.

The Potential for Positive Transformation

Yet, within the tempestuous sea of anger, there exists the potential for profound transformation—a potential that, when harnessed effectively, can steer this potent emotion toward pathways of productivity and growth. At its core, anger is an energy source, a reservoir of raw power that, when channeled and directed, can become a driving force for positive change. This transformative journey begins with the art of converting energy—an endeavor that involves recognizing the surge of anger and consciously redirecting it towards constructive outlets.

By leveraging the intensity of anger, individuals can amplify their focus on goals, heightening their determination to overcome obstacles and achieve meaningful objectives. Anger, when harnessed, becomes an unwavering compass that guides actions toward purposeful outcomes. This process of focused alignment involves a deliberate shift in perspective, where challenges are reframed as opportunities, and adversities become stepping stones toward growth.

Moreover, the fusion of anger and motivation is a powerful catalyst that propels individuals beyond their comfort zones and into realms of heightened productivity. When harnessed appropriately, the surge of anger can fuel a relentless drive toward excellence, emboldening individuals to push through barriers, embrace innovation, and pioneer new frontiers of accomplishment. The emotional charge that anger provides serves as a wellspring of determination, igniting a fire that propels individuals forward with unwavering resolve.

As we delve deeper into the intricate interplay between anger and productivity, we illuminate a transformative landscape where the volatile energy of anger can be harnessed, hewed, and channeled toward the realization of personal and collective aspirations. By acknowledging the negative repercussions of unchecked anger and embracing the potential for positive metamorphosis, we stand on the precipice of a journey that promises not only heightened productivity but also a profound evolution of self. Through deliberate introspection, strategic redirection, and purposeful alignment, we unlock the latent potential within our emotional tapestry, forging a path that blazes with purpose, productivity, and the promise of progress.

Amidst the tempestuous sea of human emotions, anger stands as a formidable wave, capable of capsizing our emotional equilibrium. Yet, within this surge of intensity lies the potential for transformative change—a potential that, when harnessed through strategic and deliberate means, can navigate the tumultuous waters towards calmer shores of productivity and growth. As we embark on a journey to explore the art of channeling anger, we unveil an array of strategies that offer both a compass and a sail, guiding us toward harnessing this potent force for constructive ends.

Mindfulness and Self-Awareness

At the forefront of effective anger management stands the beacon of mindfulness and self-awareness—a practice that necessitates keen observation of our emotional landscape. Recognizing triggers, those intricate mechanisms that ignite the flames of anger, is an essential first step. By understanding the specific situations, circumstances, or even thought patterns that incite anger, individuals gain the power to anticipate and preemptively address these triggers.

Practicing a mindful response introduces a pause, a moment of reflection between stimulus and reaction. This pause, however fleeting, allows space for conscious choice. Incorporating deep breathing and relaxation techniques further augments this process. Deep, intentional breaths serve as anchors, grounding individuals in the present moment and preventing the escalation of anger’s fervor. As the storm of emotion rages, these practices bestow the power to ride its waves with grace, rather than be tossed about by its turbulent currents.

Cognitive Reframing

A cornerstone of effective anger management lies in the art of cognitive reframing—a technique that involves reshaping thought patterns and perspectives. Challenging negative thoughts is akin to dismantling the scaffolding upon which anger rests. By questioning the validity of assumptions and appraising situations from alternate angles, individuals can weaken anger’s foothold. Shifting perspectives—viewing a situation through the lens of empathy or a broader context—invites a more nuanced understanding, potentially diffusing the emotional intensity.

Amid challenges lie hidden opportunities, awaiting discovery. By actively seeking these silver linings, individuals can transform anger’s energy into a catalyst for growth. This mental alchemy, this ability to transmute frustration into curiosity and adversity into innovation, reveals the power of cognitive reframing in steering the trajectory of emotional responses.

Creative Outlets

In the realm of emotional expression, creative outlets offer a sanctuary—a canvas upon which anger’s intensity can be splashed, brushed, or channeled into masterpieces. Artistic expression, from the strokes of a paintbrush to the rhythm of written words or the cadence of music, provides a channel for emotions that words may struggle to convey. The physicality of creative endeavors acts as a pressure valve, releasing pent-up energy and offering solace in the act of creation.

Physical activities, too, act as conduits for channeling anger into kinetic motion. Engaging in exercise, dance, or sports not only dissipates the physiological effects of anger but also infuses a sense of accomplishment. In the rhythm of movement, anger’s fervor finds release, and a newfound sense of vitality emerges. Engaging in hobbies, whether crafting, gardening, or cooking, provides a sanctuary of immersion where anger’s tempest can be transformed into a tranquil haven of creation.

Constructive Communication

The path toward channeling anger entails not only internal transformation but also external expression. Constructive communication serves as a bridge between emotional experience and interpersonal interaction. The choice of assertiveness over aggression reshapes the narrative, replacing confrontation with collaboration. Active listening, a cornerstone of effective communication, requires the suspension of judgment and the cultivation of empathy. By absorbing the perspectives of others, individuals not only defuse anger’s intensity but also forge connections built on understanding.

Expressing feelings effectively, through clear and empathetic articulation, is a powerful tool in releasing the grip of anger. In the symphony of words, the emotional charge finds release, allowing individuals to communicate their needs and perspectives while maintaining harmonious relationships. Constructive communication, in its multifaceted forms, offers a blueprint for navigating the complex terrain of interpersonal dynamics.

Goal-Oriented Action

Anger, when harnessed, becomes a potent fuel for goal-oriented action—a driving force that propels individuals toward accomplishments both small and monumental. Setting clear objectives, whether personal or professional, provides a navigational compass that directs energy toward specific ends. Breaking down tasks into manageable components offers a roadmap, preventing feelings of overwhelm and nurturing a sense of progress.

Tracking progress, through milestones and achievements, fosters a sense of accomplishment that stands as a counterbalance to anger’s turbulence. With each step forward, anger’s potency wanes as productivity’s allure grows stronger. This journey of goal-oriented action underscores the transformative potential of channeling anger, harnessing its fervor in the pursuit of purpose.

Turning Anger into Advocacy

Perhaps one of the most profound transformations lies in the conversion of anger into advocacy—a journey that transcends personal growth to encompass societal betterment. Identifying relevant causes, whether social, environmental, or humanitarian, aligns anger’s energy with a higher purpose. Joining social or community initiatives, fueled by the passion of anger, becomes a platform for collective change.

Using anger as a driving force for change, individuals become catalysts for transformation, agents of impact within their communities and beyond. The surge of anger, once a potential source of strife, becomes a beacon that guides individuals towards effecting positive change. Through advocacy, anger transcends its status as a mere emotion, evolving into a formidable agent of progress.

As we traverse the landscape of strategies for channeling anger, a tapestry of empowerment unfolds. Mindfulness, cognitive reframing, creative outlets, constructive communication, goal-oriented action, and turning anger into advocacy—all offer threads of possibility, interwoven in a symphony of transformation. This symphony, played with intention and precision, orchestrates a harmony where anger’s tumultuous energy becomes the driving force for growth, connection, and meaningful change.

In the intricate fabric of human existence, emotions weave a colorful tapestry, a mosaic of experiences that shape our reactions to the world around us. Among these emotions, resilience emerges as a steadfast companion—an unwavering anchor that enables individuals to weather the storms of life. As we venture into the realm of emotional resilience, we unearth a treasure trove of strategies designed to fortify the human spirit, navigating the ebb and flow of emotions with grace and poise.

Practicing Emotional Regulation

Central to the cultivation of emotional resilience is the art of practicing emotional regulation—a skill that empowers individuals to navigate the vast spectrum of emotions, both gentle and tempestuous. Techniques for managing intense emotions serve as the cornerstone of this practice. Through mindfulness, meditation, and deep-breathing exercises, individuals embrace emotions without succumbing to their overwhelming force. The gentle rhythm of the breath becomes a lifeline, grounding individuals in the present moment, allowing them to observe emotions without being swept away by their currents.

Building emotional awareness, a process of becoming attuned to one’s emotional landscape, is an integral component of emotional regulation. This involves the keen observation of emotional triggers, patterns, and responses. By deciphering the language of emotions, individuals gain insights into their inner workings, rendering them better equipped to anticipate and manage emotional fluctuations. This heightened awareness forms a solid foundation upon which emotional resilience is built.

Self-Care and Stress Reduction

In the pursuit of emotional resilience, the path of self-care and stress reduction unveils itself as a sanctuary of rejuvenation. The importance of regular rest cannot be understated, for it is during restful periods that the body and mind engage in vital processes of restoration and renewal. Adequate sleep, a cornerstone of well-being, provides the canvas upon which emotional resilience is painted. It is during slumber that emotions find equilibrium, stress is defused, and the spirit is replenished.

Incorporating relaxation practices further augments the arsenal of emotional resilience. Whether through meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, or engaging in leisurely activities, these practices act as counterweights to the pressures of daily life. They offer a reprieve from the relentless pace of existence, allowing individuals to recalibrate their emotional compasses and rekindle their inner fortitude.

Recognizing the potential weight of emotions and stress, seeking professional support when needed becomes a beacon of wisdom. The expertise of trained professionals, whether therapists, counselors, or coaches, can offer invaluable guidance in navigating the intricate terrain of emotions. These individuals serve as guides, illuminating pathways toward emotional well-being and resilience, ensuring that the journey is not traversed alone.

As we delve into the realm of developing emotional resilience, a mosaic of techniques emerges—a rich tapestry woven from the threads of emotional regulation, self-care, and seeking support. This mosaic stands as a testament to the human capacity for adaptation and growth, a testament that reflects the intricate dance between the ephemeral nature of emotions and the enduring strength of the human spirit. Through the practice of emotional regulation and the embrace of self-care, individuals embark on a transformative journey, one that empowers them to navigate life’s challenges with unwavering grace and resilience.

Embracing Positivity and Growth

Within the intricate dance of human experience, the interplay of light and shadow, joy and adversity, shapes the contours of our lives. In this symphony of emotions, the power of embracing positivity and growth emerges as a beacon, guiding individuals toward a path of resilience and transformation. As we embark on this journey, we unveil a tapestry of strategies that illuminate the transformative potential of cultivating gratitude and learning from setbacks, offering insights into the art of fostering emotional well-being and fostering personal evolution.

Cultivating Gratitude

At the heart of the quest for positivity and growth lies the practice of cultivating gratitude—a timeless tradition that invites individuals to shift their focus from what is lacking to the abundance that surrounds them. Keeping a gratitude journal becomes a tangible act of homage to life’s blessings. Through the act of penning down moments of gratitude, whether grand or mundane, individuals unlock a treasure trove of positivity. This ritual, performed with consistency, offers a sanctuary where the beauty of life’s smallest details takes center stage, eclipsing the shadows of negativity.

Focusing on positive aspects, an approach rooted in the psychology of well-being, becomes a conscious choice to accentuate the bright spots within life’s intricate mosaic. By consciously directing attention toward the silver linings that often accompany challenges, individuals gain a renewed perspective. This intentional pivot magnifies the influence of positivity, reshaping emotional experiences and fostering a sense of contentment that transcends circumstances.

Learning from Setbacks

In the pursuit of growth, setbacks emerge as potent crucibles of transformation—opportunities to refine strategies, cultivate resilience, and chart a course toward personal evolution. Embracing failure as a learning opportunity requires a shift in perception—a shift from viewing failure as an endpoint to perceiving it as a stepping stone. By embracing failure with an open heart and a curious mind, individuals unveil the lessons hidden within its folds.

Adapting and improving strategies, a tenet woven into the fabric of success stories, underscores the resilience of the human spirit. Setbacks serve as impetuses for reevaluation and innovation, beckoning individuals to recalibrate their approaches and seek novel solutions. This process of evolution, often marked by trial and error, births a spectrum of strategies that mirror the growth inherent in the human experience.

As we delve into the realm of embracing positivity and growth, we uncover a palette of techniques that paint a portrait of personal evolution. The cultivation of gratitude and the art of learning from setbacks offer complementary avenues toward fostering emotional well-being and nurturing the seeds of growth. In the act of gratitude, individuals unveil a prism through which life’s brilliance shines with unparalleled luminosity. Through the embrace of setbacks, individuals harness the alchemical power of transformation, transmuting adversity into stepping stones toward progress.

In weaving the threads of gratitude and resilience, individuals embark on a journey that harmonizes the heart’s desires with life’s offerings. The journey is not one of perpetual sunshine, but rather a dance between light and shadow, between the highs of gratitude and the lessons of setbacks. It is a journey that celebrates the human spirit’s capacity to rise, evolve, and flourish, even in the face of challenges. As we embrace positivity and growth, we embark on a pilgrimage toward the essence of our being, a journey that encompasses both the destination and the path itself—a journey that paints the canvas of our lives with hues of vibrancy, resilience, and boundless possibility.

Emily Divine is the Mobile Response Team (MRT) program leader

HANCOCK COUNTY — The county resident had a knife to his throat and cuts on his arm, the report stated. While officials from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department were able to calm the man down and get the knife away without anyone being harmed, the dangerous situation had to be dealt with.

Rather than have to handle the after situation on their own, law enforcement can now call on the Hancock County Mobile Response Team (MRT) — a group of highly trained professionals who have been mobilized to work with county residents struggling with mental health and substance abuse issues.

The MRT referral line opened officially in May of this year, Tondra Crum Worley, Program Manager Hancock County Outpatient, Community Fairbanks Behavioral Health, stated in an email to the Daily Reporter.

Officials from the Greenfield Police Department (GPD) say their officers are taking advantage of the new service to aid residents they are called on to help every day.

“I know the new service is being used,” GPD Deputy Chief Chuck McMichael said. “I’ve heard guys talk about how much of a difference it is making with some of those types of calls because people don’t want to talk with police officers about their mental health issues, and now we can get them the immediate help they need.”

The program received 14 referrals from January through April before going live in May when they received 10 more. They were up to 20 referrals in late July. Referrals come from from GPD, HCSD, Hancock County Probation, Hancock County Helping Courts, several Hancock County community partners, Community Fairbanks Access Department and self-referrals, Crum Worley said in the email.

For far too long, Hancock County had a void when it comes to immediate services for mental health and substance abuse issues, county officials say. That is no longer the case.

The county’s MRT was formed by officials with Community Fairbanks Behavioral Health and is up and running, providing the much-needed services. Their goal is to help county residents who need assistance with mental health and substance abuse issues, therefore freeing up law enforcement for other community police work.

The county committed nearly $2.1 million toward the initiative in 2022 from funds it received from the American Rescue Plan.

“All of this was done with an eye on public safety,” prosecutor Brent Eaton said. “Law enforcement officials don’t want to keep seeing the same people over and over again for the same crimes — the goal is to get people some real help.”

Eaton noted those in law enforcement are committed to make sure the work they do benefits public safety, and the program aims to do just that.

“The problem is to reduce recidivism and when we get people who we see are kind of trending to be in the system, if there is a way to do interventions through getting them help, then we want to do that,” Eaton said. “If we can end some of their issues, that would be great.”

The county’s MRT was created to support law enforcement and community stakeholders in responding to individuals with mental health and substance use challenges. The MRT works collaboratively with local law enforcement and community stakeholders to increase the safety of individuals needing mental health and substance use services.

The group works by responding to calls from law enforcement and community stakeholders for adults in distress. When contacted by law enforcement or community stakeholders, MRT will provide a rapid response within 24-48 hours to address needs and link people in distress with further treatment when appropriate.

Part of their interventions include, but are not limited to, face-to-face brief supportive interventions, assessment of the individual’s mental health and/or substance use needs, facilitate referral/admission to inpatient hospitalization when necessary, coordination of appropriate and available community-based services for on-going treatment and follow-up, and provide behavioral health support to adults.

“Police can tell people who are in trouble, ‘Hey, it’s really important to take your medicine and do the things you’re supposed to do,’ but when the trained professionals come in, on the medical side, they can explain everything to the person who needs help far better than we can,” McMichael said.

The MRT is not called in when an individual is actively engaged in a suicide attempt; requires immediate medical attention; or is violent, aggressive, destroying property, physically harming or threatening others.

Officials started the process of building the MRT in January with the hire of Emily Divine as the program leader. Since that time, they have been able to hire a full team that includes life skills clinicians, peers, therapists and a nurse practitioner.

The team will have shifts made up of a life skills clinician and a certified peer recovery specialist working from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week with the goal of increasing funding to grow into a 24/7 operation.

Community Fairbanks currently employs those in that profession in the emergency department at its Community East location in Indianapolis.

County residents or organizations in need of more information about the program can reach out to Divine at 317-318-7130.

DAVENPORT, IOWA (July 8, 2023) — The Vera French Community Mental Health Center (VF CMHC) and The Center — Love in Action are proud to announce that Vera French’s community-based mental health services are now available at the Center’s Brady Street location in Davenport.

Located at 1411 Brady Street in Davenport, Iowa, The Center — Love in Action is affiliated with the community outreach efforts of St John’s United Methodist Church, and shares a building with the Skate Church on Brady Street. “We are thrilled to have Vera French as a tenant and collaborator here at The Center.” said Penny Kellenberger, Executive Director of The Center — Love in Action. “Through our outreach efforts, we see people each day who could improve their own lives if only they could be connected with mental health services — having compassionate and caring members of the Vera French team right on our second floor has already made amazing connections for the people we serve.”

Vera French has served as an independent community mental-health center (CMHC) for a five-county region including the Quad Cities over the last 74 years. While Vera French has not affiliated with any religious group or domination, they welcome the partnership with the Center. Vera French CEO — Dr Richard Whitaker Jr PhD (above) said, “The Center — Love in Action does a great job helping members of our community each day. For those seeking to improve their mental health, Vera French being available onsite seemed like a natural partnership in order to increase access to our lifesaving services.”

Vera French specializes in achieving positive mental-health outcomes, especially for individuals living with the day-to-day realities of serious mental illness, which often include loss of employment and income, deteriorating health, homelessness, and strained family relationships.

Following a grant from the Vera French Foundation to renovate two private office spaces, Vera French became a tenant of The Center — Love in Action in early 2023. “At Vera French, we recognize that every person’s experience with mental illness is unique, and that there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to recovery,” said Vera French Chief Operating Officer (COO), Denise Beenk MBA/LISW/SHRM-CP. “Often times, taking the first step to recovery can be the hardest, so we innovate and adapt to engage people in places they already gather each day. For this reason, the caring and supportive environment of the Center — Love in Action was a perfect place to co-locate Vera French services.”

Earlier this year, Vera French hired Barbara Robinson-Lagarde MSW as a community-based therapist who maintains office hours at The Center — Love in Action each weekday morning. “Just like every person is different, so is every person’s recovery story. The most important thing is to be available and open to listening when a new client is ready to talk about their personal situation.” said Barbara Robinson-Lagarde MSW.

The Center — Love in Action is currently engaged in fundraising and grant-writing efforts to upgrade its IT infrastructure and internet capacity to improve the connectivity of Vera French and other service providers located there. More information about The Center — Love in Action is available on their Facebook page (facebook.com/Thecenterloveinaction/) or their website (thecenter-davenport.com/).

Mindfulness is the practice of being present and aware of what is happening in the moment, without judgment. It is a powerful tool that can help us make better choices for our health and well-being.

When we are mindful, we are better able to notice our thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations. This awareness can help us identify patterns in our behavior that may be contributing to our health issues, such as stress, anxiety, or unhealthy eating habits.

For example, if we are mindful of our eating habits, we may notice that we tend to snack when we are stressed or bored. By being aware of this pattern, we can take steps to address the underlying issue, such as finding healthier ways to manage stress or finding more engaging activities to occupy our time.

Mindfulness can also help us make better choices when it comes to our physical health. By being present and aware of our bodies, we can tune in to our physical sensations and notice when something doesn’t feel right. This can help us catch health issues early and seek treatment before they become more serious.

In addition to its benefits for physical health, mindfulness can also have a positive impact on our mental health. By being present and aware of our thoughts and feelings, we can better manage stress and anxiety. We can also develop greater self-awareness and improve our relationships with others.

So how can we practice mindfulness in our daily lives? There are many techniques and practices that can help us cultivate mindfulness, such as meditation, yoga, and tai chi. But even simple activities like taking a few deep breaths and focusing on the present moment can be powerful tools for cultivating mindfulness.

Ultimately, the key to mindfulness is to cultivate a sense of presence and awareness in our daily lives. By doing so, we can make better choices for our health and well-being, and live more fulfilling and meaningful lives.
Mindfulness is a practice that has been around for centuries and has been gaining popularity in recent years due to the increasing awareness of its benefits. It is a way of being present in the moment, paying attention to your thoughts and feelings without judgment. Mindfulness in action is about incorporating the meaning of mindfulness into daily life, making it a way of living rather than just a practice.

One way to incorporate mindfulness into daily life is by being present and fully engaged in whatever you are doing. This could be as simple as taking a walk and focusing on the sensations in your body, the sights, sounds, and smells around you. It could also be paying attention to the taste, texture, and smell of the food you are eating. By being fully present in these moments, you are practicing mindfulness and bringing a sense of calm and presence into your life.

Another way to incorporate mindfulness is to practice gratitude. Taking time each day to reflect on what you are grateful for can help shift your focus to the positive aspects of your life and reduce stress and anxiety. This can be done through journaling, meditation, or simply taking a few moments to express gratitude for the people, experiences, and things in your life.

Mindfulness can also be incorporated into daily life by practicing kindness and compassion towards yourself and others. This means being gentle with yourself when you make mistakes, acknowledging your own limitations, and treating others with empathy and understanding. By cultivating these qualities, you can create a more positive and supportive environment for yourself and those around you.

One of the most important aspects of incorporating mindfulness into daily life is creating a regular practice. This could be a daily meditation practice, yoga, or any activity that helps you connect with the present moment and your own inner wisdom. By making mindfulness a regular part of your routine, you are more likely to experience the benefits and create a more mindful way of living.

In conclusion, incorporating the meaning of mindfulness into daily life can have a profound impact on your well-being and overall sense of happiness. By being present, practicing gratitude, kindness, and compassion, and creating a regular mindfulness practice, you can bring more calm, clarity, and joy into your life. So start small, be patient, and remember that mindfulness is a journey, not a destination.
Mental health is an essential aspect of a person’s overall well-being. Unfortunately, it is an area that continues to be stigmatized and overlooked in many societies. This lack of awareness and understanding has resulted in a significant rise in mental health issues across the globe. It is now more urgent than ever to raise awareness about mental health and encourage people to seek help when needed.

Mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which an individual realizes their abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively, and can make a positive contribution to their community. However, mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder can significantly affect a person’s ability to function and lead a fulfilling life.

According to the World Health Organization, mental health disorders affect one in four people globally. This means that millions of people around the world are struggling with mental health issues, and many of them are not receiving the help they need. This is a significant problem as untreated mental health disorders can lead to a range of negative consequences such as suicide, substance abuse, and social isolation.

The urgency of mental health awareness lies in the fact that mental health disorders can affect anyone, regardless of their age, gender, or background. It is essential to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health disorders and seek help as soon as possible. This can be challenging for many people as there are still significant stigmas surrounding mental health, and many individuals feel ashamed or embarrassed to seek help.

It is crucial to raise awareness about mental health and encourage people to seek help when needed. This can be done by educating people about mental health disorders, their causes, and the available treatments. Mental health awareness campaigns can be run in schools, workplaces, and community centers to help people understand the importance of mental health and the resources available to them.

Another crucial aspect of mental health awareness is reducing the stigma surrounding mental health disorders. This can be done by promoting positive attitudes towards mental health and encouraging people to talk openly about their struggles. Mental health support groups can also be established to provide a safe and supportive space for individuals to share their experiences and seek help.

In conclusion, the urgency of mental health awareness cannot be overstated. Mental health disorders are a significant global health issue that affects millions of people worldwide. It is essential to raise awareness about mental health, reduce the stigma surrounding mental health disorders, and encourage people to seek help when needed. By doing so, we can create a more supportive and inclusive society that values mental health and well-being.

Singapore, Singapore–(Newsfile Corp. – May 31, 2023) – Research has shown that most mental disorders develop in childhood and adolescence before the age of 25, with one-quarter of years lived by young people with disability due to mental and substance use disorders.

To address this pressing concern and mobilise global efforts, the International Association for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions (IACAPAP), International Society for Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychology (ISAPP), World Association for Infant Mental Health (WAIMH), and World Psychiatric Association Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (WPA-CAP) have jointly declared April 23 as the World Infant, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Day (WICAMHD).

This year witnessed the second annual WICAMHD event under the theme of Stand Against Infant, Child and Adolescent Trauma.

Children and adolescents form one third of the world’s population. Childhood and adolescence are foundational years characterised by growth, learning, and carefree exploration. However, many around the world are inflicted by trauma and crisis – adverse experiences which research has shown to have long-lasting effects on their mental and physical well-being.

Studies also show that about 15 percent to 43 percent of girls and 14 percent to 43 percent of boys experience at least one traumatic experience.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are also contributing factors in the development of mental disorders in adult years. The indirect and compounding effects of this is a ballooning economic burden on society, especially in the areas of healthcare and productivity loss.

Children in war zones and natural disasters are particularly vulnerable. During the second annual WICAMHD event under, three renowned speakers shared their expertise on childhood trauma.

Dr Dennis Ougrin, Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, Visiting Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Global Mental Health, Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King’s College London discussed the impacts of the war in Ukraine.

Story continues

Dr Fusun Cetin Cuhadaroglu, Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, Ankara, Turkey presented on the traumatising effects of the recent earthquake in Turkey.

Finally, Dr Michelle Miller, Director of Mental Health Programs, National Children’s Alliance, United States highlighted evidence-based response for children subjected to trauma. This was followed by a panel discussion.

In addition to the main event, several national organisations held events and advocacy efforts commemorating WICAMHD.

These include the Indian Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health (IACAM), the Lithuanian Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (LVPPD), the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), the Austrian Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy (ASCAP) and the Section of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, College of Psychiatrists, Academy of Medicine, Singapore (SCAP).
