Not with a bang but with a whimper.

Except this whimper sounded more like a screech of agony.

The Wallabies’ World Cup dreams are over after a disappointing loss to Fiji — the islanders’ first win over the Wallabies since 1954 — and a straight-up embarrassing loss to Wales in Lyon.

Your local paper, whenever you want it.

Eddie Jones told journalists to “go give yourselves uppercuts” before the team had even left Australia; if anything, his Wallabies played like they were the ones seeing stars.

The Wallabies never seemed sure of themselves, throwing the proverbial at the wall to see what stuck, but they were out-schooled in both the game’s basics and finer points.

Camera IconAustralia’s head coach Eddie Jones, supervises his team’s warm-up prior to a Rugby World Cup Pool C against Wales at the Parc OL stadium in Lyon, France. Credit: Laurent Cipriani/AP

Reports of the game’s death are greatly exaggerated and little more than emotional hyperbole — sports do not just die, mainly when Rugby Australia reported 265,380 people attended Wallabies Test matches in 2022. The code experienced growth in participation last year across several different formats.

As always, the game will survive as long as boots are on the ground at the grassroots level.

But there is no doubt the game has taken a significant hit and is lost, needing a self-help guru or a self-discovery retreat deep in the jungle to find itself.

The knee-jerk reaction to bring in Jones for Dave Rennie looks downright disastrous in hindsight, even when it appeared shocking at the time.

<img decoding="async" src="https://images.perthnow.com.au/publication/C-12006278/7d6f66cf0be86c0fec50379bcc8500c773a47a84.jpg?imwidth=668&impolicy=pn_v3" alt="Australia's Fraser McReight reacts after the Rugby World Cup Pool C match between Wales and Australia at the OL Stadium in Lyon, France, Sunday, Sept. 24, 2023. Wales won the match 40-6. Credit: Christophe Ena/AP

Maybe Rugby Australia talked themselves into Jones’ experience and his gift of the gab as a mechanism to create some buzz around the game, heading into the World Cup, with the tournament heading under in four years.

Maybe Rennie would have got the Wallabies to beat Fiji and Wales under his watch, and they could have snuck into the semifinals despite looking a tier below Ireland, France and South Africa.

Maybe Jones realised the Wallabies had no chance of winning the World Cup and decided to use his French dispatch to blood the next generation at the expense of the older, wiser heads who will not be in the team in four years.

But you cannot get lost focusing on hypotheticals or what might happen in the future — the now is the most pressing issue.

Jones is provocative; he gets the people going, but not always in a good way, and RA got a disruptor when they probably needed a stabilising force in the top job to guide the team.

Earlier this year, RA parked a wheelbarrow of money outside young NRL star Joseph Sua’ali’i’s house and convinced him to put pen to paper on a five-year deal estimated to be worth millions of dollars.

Sua’ali’i’ might end up being a Wallabies star, but as the dust settles from the lashing in Lyon, the Wallabies are clearly not just one player away from being one of the best teams in the world.

Jones said it best when he noted it was not just the Wallabies who have got to improve, but the whole system in Australian rugby.

<img decoding="async" src="https://images.perthnow.com.au/publication/C-12006278/b210b2bdd17d3ae47b666866f6e1a3710644cedb.jpg?imwidth=668&impolicy=pn_v3" alt="Wales' Nick Tompkins celebrates with teammates after scoring a try against Australia during a Rugby World Cup Pool C at the Parc OL stadium in Lyon, France, Sunday, Sept. 24, 2023.
The next World Cup is in 2027 — it may seem dauntingly soon, but four years is a long time in sport.

The bare minimum should be to invest in grassroots, the lifeblood of the sport, and give Australia a Wallabies side they can be proud of when they run out in four years.
