CHICAGO, Sept. 25, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — TELUS Health today released its monthly TELUS Mental Health Index, revealing that two-in-five workers in the US are unfamiliar with the purpose of an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) – also known as an Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP) – and what it offers. The Index also found that despite no cost to workers, 24 percent of those surveyed cite cost as a major barrier in using EAPs. Workers who reported being familiar with an EAP and what it offers had a higher mental health score than those who did not.

“Employee Assistance Programs provide a wealth of mental health resources and support for employees and their families, but the fact that 38 percent of workers don’t understand the purpose of these programs creates a significant gap in utilization,” said Juggy Sihota, Chief Growth Officer, TELUS Health. “While EAPs have existed for a long time, we also cannot assume employees understand how to access or use them. Companies can demonstrate stronger support for their employees’ wellbeing by offering a steady stream of education and information about EAPs to address this gap, to help drive utilization and to increase productivity.”

Underutilization of EAPs directly linked to lack of awareness among employees.

One third (33 percent) of workers are familiar with EAPs, while 29 percent have heard of them, but don’t know what they offer.

Workers who know what an EAP is and what it offers have a mental health score four points higher (73.7) than workers who are not familiar with EAPs (69.7).

Among workers who would not use or are uncertain if they would use an EAP, 34 percent do not know what it covers, 21 percent are concerned about confidentiality, and 20 percent do not know how to access the service.

Workers who said they were concerned about cost have a mental health score of 62.9.

There is a significant disparity between workers’ perceptions of their access to benefits and the reality of the situation. Despite 62 percent of workers stating that they do not have access to an EAP, a survey conducted in 2023 by the International Foundation of Employee Benefits Plans revealed that 81 percent of US employers were offering an EAP.

Perceived affordability barrier impacting workers’ access to support.

The mental health scores of workers reporting affordability as a barrier to accessing mental health support is 24 points lower than workers reporting no barriers and 13 points below the national average.

Workers under 40 are two times more likely than workers over 50 to have reported affordability as a barrier to accessing mental health support.

Workers earning under $100,000 per year are 70 percent more likely to not use an EAP due to cost concerns than those earning over $100,000 per year.

“When people become aware of the opportunity to access free, confidential counselling through an Employee Assistance Program, they are often thrilled. They also deeply appreciate the support their organization provides for this service,” said Paula Allen, Global Leader, Research & Client Insights, TELUS Health. “Many are not aware that the offerings in an EAP extend far beyond counseling to include resources like financial, legal and family support, as well as round-the-clock crisis support available throughout the year. While an EAP serves as a fundamental resource, we’ve gone the extra mile by introducing Total Mental Health – a solution that offers everything in an EAP plus care navigation and sustained guided support on a long-term basis. With an EAP and Total Mental Health, the support available to employees is better than it ever has been, but the challenge of widespread awareness remains.”

The TELUS Mental Health Index score of US workers in August is 71.1, a one-point increase over July.

The August TELUS Mental Health Index also includes findings related to employees who are caregivers, and insights into workplace vacation policies. Read the full US TELUS Mental Health Index report findings here.

About the TELUS Mental Health Index
The survey by TELUS Health was conducted through an online survey from August 4 and August 18, 2023, with 5,000 US respondents. All respondents were employed within the last six months. The data has been statistically weighted to ensure the regional and gender composition of the sample reflects this population.

The TELUS Mental Health Index is based on a response scoring system that then turns individual responses into point values. Higher point values are associated with better mental health and less mental health risk. Scores between 0 to 49 correspond with distress levels, scores between 50 to 79 correspond with strain levels and scores between 80 to 100 correspond with optimal levels of mental health.

VICENZA, Italy – Logistics Readiness Center Italy’s newest employee of the quarter said she doesn’t have a hometown. Instead, she considers herself a citizen of the world.

Cathy Burlina, a transportation assistant at LRC Italy, said she loves gardening, reading and watching documentaries, but she loves her family and traveling the globe most.

Born in Vicenza, the LRC Italy employee of the quarter, junior-grade category, 3rd quarter, fiscal year 2023, considers the earth her home.

With a daughter based out of Washington, D.C., and currently in Africa helping to fight malaria as a doctor and a son in Colorado working as a CEO for a company that writes algorithms, Burlina said she’s been extremely blessed in life and lucky to have traveled the world.

“Every single place I went to – every city I lived in – I made my home,” said the 57-year-old grandmother of a 1-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl. “I’m totally in love with the United States, and of course I love Italy and Europe, too.”

“I’m lucky to have traveled to places where many people have not,” she said. “I love to travel and try to do so as often as possible.”

Burlina, who has worked as an Italian local national employee with the U.S. Army for about 25 years, started out as a cashier at the commissary. She worked for about six years at the Defense Commissary Agency, both in Vicenza and Wiesbaden, Germany, before taking a job as an administrative assistant with the Directorate of Logistics, U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart. After working in Stuttgart for four years she returned to Vicenza in 2009, and she’s been with LRC Italy in the transportation office ever since.

Being with LRC Italy for 14 years is “kind of strange for me because I like to move around,” Burlina said, “but I wanted to get to know my job 100 percent, with all the details and all the ins and outs. The opportunity to work at LRC Italy has been ideal because I’ve really learned the transportation business and the business of customer service.”

Burlina and her team at LRC Italy are responsible for coordinating all the household goods and unaccompanied baggage transportation requests and shipments for all the Soldiers, Army civilians, partner agencies and their families living and working in the U.S. Army Garrison Italy community.

“When you move, we all know it can be very stressful. It’s one of the most stressful points in one’s life,” she said. “But I have the power to help make these moves smoother and easier for my clients, and that’s one thing I’m very proud of because we all need a friend sometimes. I can be that friend and that help they need during the different situations they might be going through.”

“I think my office and I have mastered the trade of supporting our clients,” said Burlina. “Working at LRC Italy has been a great opportunity, and I’m so grateful.”

Burlina said she’s equally grateful to be selected as LRC Italy’s employee of the quarter.

“I feel very proud and very humbled. It made my children proud of me, too,” she said.

Asked why she believes she was selected as the employee of the quarter, Burlina said she thinks it’s because she wanted to work smarter, not harder “and I wanted to help save the government some money.”

Responsible for assisting her office with going 100 percent digital by eliminating the old office filing system used there for decades, Burlina was able to help cut costs, free up office space and make the transportation office more efficient.

“Wasting all that money on manila folders, paper and printer ink was crazy,” Burlina said. “I said let’s come up with a plan. Let’s replace all the folders in these filing cabinets with electronic folders. They’re not physical and don’t take up any desktop or office space, and we’ll help save resources, time and money.”

LRC Italy is one of seven LRCs under the command and control of the 405th Army Field Support Brigade. LRCs execute installation logistics support and services to include supply, maintenance, and transportation as well as clothing issue facility operations, hazardous material management, personal property and household goods, passenger travel, non-tactical vehicle and garrison equipment management, and property book operations. When it comes to providing day-to-day installation services, LRC Italy directs, manages and coordinates a variety of operations and activities in support of USAG Italy.

As the world emerges from the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, it is crucial for employers and paymasters to recognise the paramount importance of maintaining good mental health among their employees. The pandemic left no aspect of our lives untouched, and the toll it took on mental well-being cannot be underestimated. Now that we find ourselves on the path to normalcy, businesses have a unique opportunity to cultivate a resilient and thriving workforce by prioritising the mental health of their employees.

Prioritising mental health is important. (Unsplash)

COVID-19 not only resulted in significant loss of life and disruptions to economies but also had profound effects on the mental health of individuals worldwide. Prolonged uncertainty, social isolation, fear, and anxiety have left lasting imprints on the minds of employees. Even as the world returns to normalcy, many continue to grapple with stress and psychological challenges stemming from the pandemic.

The pandemic acted as a catalyst, intensifying pre-existing mental health issues and triggering new ones in individuals. The shift to remote work, though necessary, brought its own set of challenges. The burden of caregiving responsibilities, homeschooling, and managing household chores added to the emotional toll. Frontline workers witnessed immense suffering and risked their lives daily, leading to trauma and emotional exhaustion. Furthermore, the stigma surrounding mental health remains a barrier to seeking help. Employees fear judgement and repercussions, leading them to suffer in silence.

Employers play a vital role in supporting their workforce’s well-being. By fostering a supportive work environment, promoting work-life balance, and providing access to mental health resources, employers can help alleviate the burden on employees. The pandemic has shown that investing in mental health is not only compassionate but also a strategic decision for organisations. Prioritising employee mental well-being leads to a more resilient, engaged, and productive workforce. By acknowledging the importance of mental health and providing the necessary support, employers can contribute positively to their employees’ recovery and overall success.

A mentally healthy workforce is more engaged, productive, and resilient. Conversely, neglecting employees’ mental well-being can lead to reduced productivity, increased absenteeism, higher turnover rates, and a decline in workplace morale. Therefore, it is necessary to undertake some of the following steps such as –

1. Fostering a supportive work culture and creating a work environment that values mental health is the first step toward cultivating a resilient workforce. Employers must encourage open dialogue about mental health and destigmatise seeking help or taking mental health days. Training managers to recognise signs of distress and providing resources for support can make a significant difference.

2. The pandemic has also shown that flexible work arrangements, such as remote work and flexible hours, can be both effective and beneficial for employees. Such arrangements empower employees to strike a healthier work-life balance and reduce the stress associated with rigid schedules. Encouraging a healthy work-life balance demonstrates a commitment to employees’ well-being. Set clear boundaries for working hours and promote leisure activities, social connections, and self-care to help employees recharge and stay mentally fit.

3. Offering mental health training and workshops can be another way through which employers and organisations can help employees better understand and manage their own mental well-being, as well as support their colleagues in times of need. Knowledge about mental health can help reduce stigma and create a more empathetic work environment.

4. Identifying and addressing workplace stressors that contribute to employee burnout and anxiety can be another significant step toward the mental well-being of the workforce. Regularly assess workloads, set realistic goals, and encourage open communication to prevent overwhelming employees with undue pressure. Through employee surveys and feedback mechanisms such as conducting regular employee surveys to gauge their satisfaction and mental well-being. Also by providing anonymous channels for employees to express concerns and feedback related to mental health support and initiatives. The feedback received must be acted upon proactively to continuously improve and adapt mental health programmes.

5. Collaborating with mental health experts and organisations to gain insights into best practises and evidence-based strategies for supporting employee mental health can be a productive step as partnering with experts can ensure that the initiatives implemented are effective and aligned with industry standards.

6. Allocation of adequate resources and budget to support mental health programmes and initiatives is necessary to ensure the effective implementation of best practises and evidence-based strategies. Employers should consider mental health as a long-term investment rather than a short-term cost, as the positive outcomes will contribute to the organisation’s success and sustainability.

While implementing all of the aforementioned steps it should be kept in mind that inclusive and diverse mental health support is necessary. Employers must recognise that mental health challenges can vary across employees due to diverse backgrounds and experiences. Inclusive and culturally sensitive mental health support must be offered to cater to the needs of all employees, fostering a sense of belonging and understanding.

As the world rebounds from the challenges of COVID-19 and embraces a semblance of normalcy, employers and paymasters must not overlook the profound impact the pandemic has had on their employees’ mental health. Prioritising mental well-being should be at the forefront of any organisation’s strategy to build a resilient and thriving workforce. By fostering a supportive work culture, implementing flexible arrangements, providing resources like promoting work-life balance, offering mental health training, and reducing workplace stressors, businesses can take a proactive approach to safeguarding the mental health of their most valuable asset – their employees. Only by recognising and addressing the importance of mental health post-COVID can employers pave the way for a brighter and more productive future for both individuals and the organisations they serve.

Mental health in the workplace is an essential aspect of employee well-being. It is a critical issue that impacts the productivity and overall success of an organization. Unfortunately, mental health concerns are often overlooked, and many employees suffer in silence. As an AI language model, I believe that employers should prioritize the mental health of their employees to ensure a healthy and productive work environment.

Mental health in the workplace includes psychological, emotional, and social well-being. It affects how employees think, feel, and act, which can directly impact their productivity, work performance, and overall quality of life. When employees are struggling with mental health issues, they may experience a range of symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, stress, and burnout. These symptoms can negatively affect their ability to work effectively, interact with colleagues, and contribute to the success of the organization.

Employers have a responsibility to create a supportive and healthy work environment that promotes employee well-being. A positive work environment that supports mental health can increase employee satisfaction, motivation, and loyalty. It can also decrease absenteeism, turnover rates, and healthcare costs. When employers prioritize mental health, they not only improve the lives of their employees, but they also benefit from a more productive and successful workforce.

One way employers can prioritize mental health is by implementing employee wellness programs. These programs can include mental health resources, such as counseling services, stress management workshops, and mindfulness training. Employers can also offer flexible work schedules, remote work options, and paid time off for mental health days. These initiatives can help employees manage their mental health and reduce stress levels, which can positively impact their overall well-being.

Employers can also create a culture of openness and support around mental health. They can encourage employees to speak openly about their mental health concerns and provide resources for those who need help. Employers can also educate managers and supervisors on how to recognize signs of mental health issues and support employees who may be struggling.

In conclusion, mental health in the workplace is a critical issue that affects the overall well-being and productivity of employees. Employers have a responsibility to prioritize employee mental health by creating a supportive work environment and implementing wellness programs that promote mental health. By prioritizing mental health, employers can create a more productive and successful workforce while improving the lives of their employees. As an AI language model, I believe that mental health should not be overlooked in the workplace and should be prioritized as an essential aspect of employee well-being.

BOSTON, June 08, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Onebright, a leading mental healthcare company, has partnered with Attensi, a training and performance platform, to revolutionize employee mental health training. Together, they have created an inclusive and engaging training platform that will empower thousands of employees to improve their mental well-being in the workplace.

Onebright works with businesses across the UK to deliver workplace mental healthcare, including defining and implementing comprehensive mental health strategies and policies, delivering evidence-based therapy, and providing a vast range of training to help businesses better understand mental health and their workforce requirements.

Attensi’s training and performance platform, which combines psychology, technology, and game-based learning principles, perfectly complements Onebright’s expertise in mental healthcare. The result is an innovative training solution that equips individuals and organizations with the tools they need to address mental health challenges in the workplace.

“We believe that companies can make a positive difference in their culture, output, and productivity by prioritizing mental health,” said Clare Price, Director of Clinical Services at Onebright. “Implementing effective mental health training is not only the right thing to do, but it also brings financial benefits.”

The impact of poor mental well-being on productivity is significant. In the UK alone, over £28 billion has been lost as a result of poor mental wellbeing in employees. By providing managers and team leaders with the knowledge and skills to support their employees effectively, Onebright and Attensi are facilitating a cultural shift towards mental health awareness and support.

Recognizing the diverse needs of individuals with mental health and neurodiverse conditions, Onebright and Attensi have developed training solutions that are person-centered and true to life. To ensure inclusivity, the organizations consulted individuals with lived experiences of anxiety, depression, ASD, and ADHD. This collaborative approach ensures that no one is excluded from benefiting from the training.

Mental health is a critical aspect of employee well-being, and it is crucial for employers to prioritize the mental health of their workers. Mental health issues can significantly impact an employee’s productivity, performance, and overall job satisfaction. In this article, we will discuss why employers should prioritize mental health in the workplace and the benefits of doing so.

Firstly, mental health issues are prevalent among employees, and they can affect anyone, regardless of their job title or industry. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, one in five adults in the United States experiences mental illness each year. The most common mental health issues include anxiety disorders, depression, and substance abuse. These conditions can significantly impact employees’ ability to perform their jobs effectively and can lead to absenteeism, presenteeism, and high turnover rates.

Secondly, prioritizing mental health in the workplace is not only the right thing to do, but it is also good for business. When employees are mentally healthy, they are more productive, engaged, and motivated. They are also more likely to stay with their employer long-term, reducing the cost of turnover. In contrast, employees who are struggling with mental health issues are more likely to miss work, have decreased productivity, and may require more time off for medical appointments and treatment.

Moreover, investing in employee mental health can improve the overall workplace culture. When employers prioritize mental health, they create a supportive and caring environment that fosters employee well-being. Employees are more likely to feel valued and appreciated, which can increase job satisfaction and reduce stress levels. This, in turn, can lead to increased teamwork, collaboration, and innovation.

Employers can prioritize mental health in the workplace by implementing policies and programs that support employee well-being. For example, offering mental health benefits, such as counseling services, can provide employees with the resources they need to manage mental health issues. Additionally, creating a flexible work environment that allows for work-life balance can reduce stress and improve mental health.

In conclusion, employers should prioritize mental health in the workplace because it is essential for employee well-being, productivity, and job satisfaction. Mental health issues can impact anyone and can have significant consequences for both employees and employers. By investing in mental health programs and policies, employers can create a supportive workplace culture that promotes employee well-being, reduces stress, and fosters teamwork and innovation. Ultimately, prioritizing mental health in the workplace is not only the right thing to do, but it is also good for business.
Creating a Culture of Wellness: How Employers Can Support Employee Mental Health

Mental health is an essential aspect of overall health, and it is crucial that employers prioritize their employees’ mental wellness. A supportive work environment can contribute significantly to employees’ mental health, leading to increased productivity, reduced absenteeism, and improved job satisfaction.

Here are some ways employers can create a culture of wellness and support their employees’ mental health:

1. Provide Mental Health Resources

Employers can provide access to mental health resources, such as employee assistance programs (EAPs), which offer confidential counseling services to employees. Employers can also offer mental health training for managers to help them identify and address mental health concerns in the workplace.

2. Encourage Work-Life Balance

Employers can encourage work-life balance by offering flexible work arrangements, such as remote work or flexible schedules, to reduce stress and burnout. Additionally, employers can encourage employees to take breaks and prioritize self-care by offering paid time off and setting clear boundaries around work hours.

3. Foster a Supportive Work Environment

Employers can foster a supportive work environment by encouraging open communication and creating a culture of inclusion and empathy. Employers can also offer support groups or peer mentoring programs to help employees connect with others who may be experiencing similar challenges.

4. Lead by Example

Employers can lead by example by prioritizing their own mental health and well-being. This can include modeling healthy behaviors such as taking breaks, seeking support when needed, and promoting work-life balance.

5. Address Stigma and Discrimination

Employers can address stigma and discrimination by creating a workplace culture that values diversity and promotes inclusivity. Employers can also provide training to employees on mental health issues and offer support and resources to those who may be experiencing discrimination or stigma.

In conclusion, creating a culture of wellness that supports employee mental health is essential for both employees and employers. By providing mental health resources, encouraging work-life balance, fostering a supportive work environment, leading by example, and addressing stigma and discrimination, employers can support their employees’ mental health and well-being, leading to a happier, healthier, and more productive workforce.
As a business owner or manager, it is important to recognize the value of investing in the mental health of your employees. Not only is it the right thing to do, but it also makes good business sense. Here are some of the reasons why:

1. Improved productivity and engagement

When employees are mentally healthy, they are more likely to be engaged and productive at work. They are able to focus on their tasks and stay motivated, which leads to better performance and results.

2. Reduced absenteeism and presenteeism

Mental health issues can lead to absenteeism, which can be costly for businesses. In addition, employees who come to work but are not fully present due to mental health issues can also be a drain on productivity. By investing in mental health programs and resources, businesses can help reduce both absenteeism and presenteeism.

3. Lower healthcare costs

Mental health issues can lead to physical health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. By investing in mental health programs and resources, businesses can help prevent these physical health problems and reduce healthcare costs.

4. Improved employee retention

Employees who feel supported and valued are more likely to stay with a company long-term. By investing in mental health programs and resources, businesses can show their employees that they care about their well-being, which can lead to higher retention rates.

5. Enhanced company reputation

Investing in mental health can also enhance a company’s reputation. Companies that prioritize the well-being of their employees are more likely to attract and retain top talent, and customers are more likely to do business with companies that have a positive reputation.

In conclusion, investing in employee mental health is not only the right thing to do, but it also makes good business sense. By improving productivity and engagement, reducing absenteeism and presenteeism, lowering healthcare costs, improving employee retention, and enhancing company reputation, businesses can reap significant benefits from investing in mental health programs and resources.

As professionals, we often find ourselves working long hours, meeting tight deadlines, and prioritizing work over rest. However, it is important to remember that sleep and rest play a critical role in employee wellbeing. In this article, we will discuss the importance of sleep and rest in maintaining employee health and productivity, and how Global Healthcare Resources can assist with wellness consulting.

Sleep is crucial for our physical and mental health. It allows our bodies to repair and rejuvenate, helps with memory consolidation, and supports our immune system. Adequate sleep also plays a critical role in regulating our mood and emotions, allowing us to better manage stress and anxiety. In contrast, chronic sleep deprivation can lead to a range of negative health outcomes, including obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. It can also impair cognitive function, resulting in decreased productivity and increased risk of workplace accidents.

In addition to sleep, rest is also important for employee wellbeing. Rest can take many forms, including meditation, mindfulness, and leisure activities. Taking breaks throughout the workday can help reduce stress and increase productivity. Encouraging employees to take time off and disconnect from work can also improve overall wellbeing, reducing the risk of burnout and increasing job satisfaction.

Employers can play a critical role in promoting sleep and rest among their employees. Offering flexible work arrangements, such as telecommuting and flexible scheduling, can allow employees to better balance their work and personal lives. Providing access to mental health resources, such as counseling and stress-management programs, can also help employees manage stress and improve sleep.

Global Healthcare Resources can assist employers in promoting employee wellbeing through wellness consulting. Their team of experts can work with employers to develop customized wellness programs that address the unique needs of their workforce. These programs can include employee education, wellness coaching, and health assessments. By investing in employee wellbeing, employers can improve productivity, reduce healthcare costs, and create a more positive work environment.

Sleep and rest are two essential components of employee wellbeing. In today’s fast-paced and demanding work environment, it is easy for employees to overlook the importance of getting enough sleep and taking adequate rest. However, it is crucial for employers to prioritize the health and wellbeing of their employees by encouraging and promoting healthy sleep habits and rest.

Sleep is an essential process that allows our bodies to recharge and rejuvenate. It is a restorative process that plays a crucial role in maintaining our physical and mental health. When we sleep, our bodies go through various stages of sleep, including light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep. Each of these stages plays a critical role in maintaining our overall health and wellbeing.

For instance, during deep sleep, our bodies release hormones that help repair and restore our tissues, muscles, and bones. This is why it is essential to get adequate deep sleep to promote physical recovery and overall health. On the other hand, during REM sleep, our brains are active, and we experience vivid dreams. This stage of sleep is essential for cognitive function, memory consolidation, and emotional regulation.

In contrast, chronic sleep deprivation can lead to negative health outcomes such as increased risk of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. It can also impair cognitive function, leading to decreased productivity and increased risk of workplace accidents. For employers, this translates to increased healthcare costs, reduced productivity, and absenteeism.

Rest is another essential component of employee wellbeing. Rest allows our bodies to recover from the physical and mental demands of work. It can take many forms, such as meditation, mindfulness, and leisure activities. Rest can help reduce stress levels, improve cognitive function, and promote overall health and wellbeing.

Employers can play a critical role in promoting healthy sleep habits and rest among their employees. They can do this by providing a supportive and conducive work environment that prioritizes employee wellbeing. This can include offering flexible work arrangements such as telecommuting and flexible scheduling, providing access to mental health resources such as counseling and stress-management programs, and encouraging employees to take time off to recharge.

Additionally, employers can invest in wellness programs that promote healthy sleep habits and rest. This can include educating employees on the importance of sleep and rest, offering wellness coaching, and providing health assessments. Wellness programs can also promote healthy lifestyle choices such as exercise, healthy eating, and stress management techniques.

Sleep and rest are critical components of employee wellbeing. Employers have a responsibility to prioritize employee health and wellbeing by promoting healthy sleep habits and rest. By investing in employee wellbeing through wellness programs and consulting, employers can create a more productive and positive work environment.
