I don’t know when I became curious about the purpose of suffering.

Most likely a slow process eased its way into my awareness as I aged, and I started to question why my challenges created such discord within me. Although numerous resources can help explain such things, the one that first caught my attention came from The Hidden Words by Baha’u’llah:

Out of the wastes of nothingness, with the clay of My command I made thee to appear, and have ordained for thy training every atom in existence and the essence of all created things… – The Hidden Words, p. 32.

The word “training” has many levels of implication:

To teach a particular job or activity

To prepare yourself/somebody for a particular activity

To develop a natural ability or quality so that it improves

To make a plant grow in a particular direction

To be taught, prepared, developed and shown how to grow with “every atom in existence and the essence of all created things” is a concept that I find completely and utterly fascinating.

The quote does not say training comes from only “good” atoms and essences. Nor does it exclude the atoms I am composed of, and the essence of who I am. This all boils down to me becoming conscious of the fact that I am an integral part of what exists–as is every other human being, and the rest of creation, too.

From this perspective, I see training as the limitless exchanges an individual has internally and externally; between themselves and someone or something else; both tangible and intangible. All of these exchanges exist on a spectrum from the onerous and downright horrendous to the excellent and wonderful, each varying in level of intensity and complexity from low to high, as well as in length of time from nanoseconds to years.

Because each of us knows our own self far better than anyone else can, how we experience every aspect of our training can only be determined by the person experiencing them. There are billions of people on this planet, and what proves difficult for one person to cope with may not be difficult for someone else:

…on this dusty earth all humankind are suffering… And if a human life, with its spiritual being, were limited to this earthly span, then what would be the harvest of creation? Indeed, what would be the effects and the outcomes of Divinity Itself? Were such a notion true, then all created things, all contingent realities, and this whole world of being — all would be meaningless. God forbid that one should hold to such a fiction and gross error. – Abdu’l-Baha, Selections from the Writings of Abdu’l-Baha, p. 184.

When something makes you suffer, creates unhappiness or causes internal struggle, it is empowering to believe that:

God hath never burdened any soul beyond its power. – Baha’u’llah, Gleanings from the Writings of Baha’u’llah, p. 106.

Because I believe that reassuring truth, my perspective has changed from one of bemoaning trials, tribulations, tests and suffering to an increasing acceptance of them–because “every atom in existence and the essence of all created things “ are for our training.

I now try to see my suffering and troubles as a means for cultivation of self, the fine-tuning of character and virtues. In the same way, I hope that our collective suffering has meaning, and will eventually lead humanity to the point that our training will no longer involve war, hunger, poverty and other such man-made difficulties:

God alone ordereth all things and is all-powerful. Why then does He send trials to His servants?

The trials of man are of two kinds. (a) The consequences of his own actions. If a man eats too much, he ruins his digestion; if he takes poison he becomes ill or dies. If a person gambles he will lose his money; if he drinks too much he will lose his equilibrium. All these sufferings are caused by the man himself, it is quite clear therefore that certain sorrows are the result of our own deeds. (b) Other sufferings there are, which come upon the Faithful of God. Consider the great sorrows endured by Christ and by His apostles!

Those who suffer most, attain to the greatest perfection… Men who suffer not, attain no perfection. The plant most pruned by the gardeners is that one which, when the summer comes, will have the most beautiful blossoms and the most abundant fruit.

The laborer cuts up the earth with his plough, and from that earth comes the rich and plentiful harvest. The more a man is chastened, the greater is the harvest of spiritual virtues shown forth by him. – Abdu’l-Baha, Paris Talks, p. 49.

My “morning pages” journal – an essential item for anyone embarking upon “The Artist’s Way” journey. (Credit: Candice Helfand-Rogers)

“What if the cure for cancer is trapped inside the mind of someone who can’t afford an education?”

I’ve seen some iteration of this sentiment shared on my social media feeds many times – largely because it’s true. We’ll never know the critical, even life-saving innovations that remain locked inside of individuals who aren’t given opportunities to explore their full potential.

But what of the creativity that also goes unmanifested?

I recently completed “The Artist’s Way,” a 12-week self-exploratory course contained within a 1992 self-help book written by author and filmmaker Julia Cameron. Through a series of exercises – mostly ones that align with the focus or theme of a respective week in the program – participants are invited to connect with, and nurture, one’s “inner artist.”

Mere days after starting that journey, I wrote a news brief about a Pew Research Center poll which revealed that men in partnerships with women have access to a disproportionate amount of leisure time – indulging in several hours more of it per week than their significant others as the women are statistically more likely to shoulder the bulk of household and childcare duties, owing to a mix of financial necessity and gender norms.

That post stayed on my mind throughout my “Artist’s Way” experience. I came to think of it as a dash of what Cameron refers to as “synchronicity” – a seeming alignment between one’s own personal experiences, and the broader whims and shifts that seem driven by a force greater than, and incomprehensible to, us.

In large part because I – as my son’s watcher and an individual maintaining several jobs – can relate.

In addition to the prompts that vary week to week, there are two activities one engages in throughout the entire process – daily morning pages, which require you to pour whatever is on your mind into three free-form journal pages to start each day; and weekly artist’s dates, which involve taking yourself, and only yourself, somewhere personally inspirational and relaxing.

In theory, these sound accessible. For the primary caregivers and household managers of the world like me, they’re near impossible to adhere to, at least in any strict sense. Morning pages became “whenever I can” pages, as my days often begin with unceremonious wake-ups by a small someone who immediately needs to know, for example, the gender identities of each Minion. In all, I squeezed in two artist’s dates around my son’s whims and my own hectic schedule – as well as my own exhaustion.

Yet I was still able to have a meaningful experience – and I learned so much.

The mere act of keeping up with those morning pages and artists dates – or not – inspired in me a series of tough internal conversations in which I attempted to separate out the ways in which my responsibilities genuinely limited me from creating, and the ways in which I limit myself by resting on a schedule and a lifestyle that is known to me. Or by my reluctance, sometimes refusal, to ask for help.

I discovered the extent to which external validation, or lack thereof, colors my perception of my work, and set about trying to untangle the connection. I found joy in investing in myself, both financially, and with time and effort – upgrading my computer; reorganizing and redecorating my personal work space; signing up and training for my first race since becoming a mother.

I saw results in my professional and creative life. “Art is not about thinking something up,” Cameron writes in one of the (many) portions of the book I screen-shotted. “It is about the opposite – getting something down.” I felt that in personal essays, listicles and an obituary that flowed through me like water. I began trusting myself more as a singer as well, feeling more assured in what I know my voice and musical mind are capable of, and seizing opportunities as they arose.

Taking leaps, in anticipation of a net appearing, as Cameron also says – and it often would.

What a gift it’s been, to imagine and play and consider new projects that I hope to take on. What a privilege – and “privilege” is the operative word here. I got to have this experience, even if it was somewhat limited by my circumstances. What of those who are carrying even more, either because of their individual realities or the myriad inequities built into our society’s structure?

During my Artist’s Way process, I also penned a lengthier piece on the dearth of talk around federal-level paid leave and childcare policies from 2024 presidential candidates. For it, I spoke with Rep. Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut, who has been attempting for decades to address the lack of support for families from a policy perspective. She talked about the ways in which these failures cut off women’s careers. “A pandemic forced many women and people of color out of their jobs,” she said to me. “They did not opt out of the workforce, but were forced out because of inadequate policies.”

If our lack of social safety nets is hurting women’s abilities to make a basic living and provide necessities for their families – what hope can their creative endeavors possibly have to develop and find their ways out into the world?

I’m frustrated by missing out on parts of my own “Artist’s Way” process. But I am far angrier on behalf of those whose lives cut them off from experiencing any of this. And I mourn the creative works we’ll never get to enjoy – as they, too, remain trapped within women too burdened to free them, or even find them inside in the first place. The songs I’ll never cry to in my own overwhelmed moments; the books I’ll never take too long to read around my own busy life.

As Cameron notes: “The ego always wants to claim self-sufficiency. It would rather pose as a creative loner than ask for help.” I wholly agree. But the onus to fix this particular brand of isolation does not rest solely upon those who are already carrying more than their share.

At the end of the day, we need reinforcement – from inside, and out. ◼

July 5, 2023

NTT DATA Corporation

As the official IT provider for golf’s original Championship, NTT DATA will bring its award-winning ShotView technology to The Open this year, following its inaugural success at The 150th Open last year, while once again providing fans with an unparalleled data experience

July 5th, 2023 – NTT DATA today announced that it will launch its digital twin-supported ShotView technology at The 151st Open, taking place at Royal Liverpool from 16-23 July. Following ShotView’s reception last year with fans across the world, NTT DATA has further built on its success to provide additional data points, insights and analysis that will break new ground for the Championship.

NTT DATA, which announced its multiyear extension of its sponsorship of golf’s original championship, The Open, last year, has celebrated a close partnership with The R&A since 2013. Over the past decade, NTT DATA has delivered cutting-edge technology to elevate the fan experience for golf enthusiasts, culminating this year in the most immersive and engaging experience to date.

Launched at The 150th Open last year, ShotView signified a first for golf in its use of digital twin technology, which enabled fans on the course and at home to gain unprecedented insight into the millions of data points gathered around the course in a live, interactive setting. The technology implementation was recently recognised at The 2023 Sports Technology Awards, which took place in New York as the winner of ‘Best Technology for Data and Analytics’.

NTT DATA is once again bringing new developments for golf in a better integrated and more mobile-optimised version of the technology, which will allow fans to dive deeper into data insights and analyse the play like never before. With additional functionality this year including higher quality 3D imagery and a more interactive interface, ShotView will help fans understand the context of the sport and how different players are applying different strategies, providing a head-to-head comparison between players, as well as comparisons with other competitions.

These advanced insights will be accessible via TheOpen.com, as well as once again being viewed by fans onsite at The NTT DATA Wall, an LED event installation over 20 metres wide. The NTT DATA Wall provides a clear view of what’s going on at the Championship in real-time, delivering live broadcast from all around the venue, alongside compelling statistics and insightful data visualisations. This year, NTT DATA will also be collaborating with the wider sponsors of The Open to deliver sustainability insights to fans via the installation too. Live updates on water usage and plastic bottles saved, public transport used, and locally sourced food consumed will help fans onsite to understand the carbon footprint of their attendance and make more informed decisions.

The NTT DATA Wall brings fans closer to the action and the hidden drama behind the numbers.

At this year’s Championship, NTT DATA will also showcase its latest AI-powered digital human technology, the ‘it.human’ platform. Named Lottie – after Charlotte ‘Lottie’ Dod, the English multi-sport athlete best known as a tennis player who won the Wimbledon Ladies’ Singles Championship five times – the digital human will educate and entertain those onsite, providing insights on the tournament, background information on players and the sport, and helping guide visitors around the course. The platform leverages a life-like digital avatar to replicate human movement and sound, using gestures, body language, facial expressions and tone of voice to add a human element to the traditional self-service interface. Combined with multimedia, including audio, video and images, the digital human creates an interactive and engaging offering which combines the best of digital and human interactions and represents the future of customer service across industries.

Paolo Zanotti, CMO, at NTT DATA EMEAL, comments, “At NTT DATA, we’re incredibly proud of the innovations we’ve executed at The Open over the past decade, bringing together the best technologies from across industries to transform the business of sport. Each year, we’ve delivered improved insights and analysis, using the global NTT DATA expertise and learnings from digital transformation projects being executed for some of the world’s leading organisations. We now provide a level of detail on the sport of golf that we’ve never seen before.
“With so many variables present in golf, providing fans with deep insights gives them a richer experience and engages them further in the sport they love. This is why we’re thrilled to be bringing the deeper statistical insights this year via the revamped ShotView. While we won the prestigious STA award following the launch of ShotView last year, we never rest on our laurels. We’ve worked to further improve the user experience of the platform, while implementing an updated data collection process for not only more accurate data gathering but increased insights too, bringing a new level of granularity never seen before.”

Professor Steve Otto, Chief Technology Officer, The R&A, adds, “Our partnership with NTT DATA has been instrumental in driving innovative change at The Open since 2013. We’re passionate about engaging as many people as possible in the sport of golf throughout our portfolio, and NTT DATA’s continued digital advancements are helping us to do this, providing fans with better insights and analysis on the sport. We’re also looking forward to interacting with ‘Lottie’ onsite and discussing how this, and related implementations can be used to enhance access to data and insights.”

Maria Signorino credits the Life Design program at Bowling Green State University for her success and path to early graduation. (BGSU photo)

A Bowling Green State University student is crediting Life Design for setting her on a path of personal discovery while also presenting an opportunity to graduate early and with less debt.

As a freshman at BGSU, Maria Signorino eagerly looked forward to her weekly class on Life Design at BGSU.

“I remember always feeling so energized after that class,” Signorino said. “I was always raising my hand, asking questions and participating in the discussions. It felt like my place.”

Signorino was among the first cohort of students introduced to Life Design at BGSU in fall 2020. The program provides students with extra support in addition to traditional advising and academic resources. BGSU is the only university in the nation offering Life Design on such a broad scale.

“I honestly don’t think I would have had the opportunities or experiences I’ve created for myself without Life Design and my coach,” she said. “It pushed me and challenged me. I love that I was given this experience in college that not only focuses on academics but prioritizes living a meaningful life.”

Life Design benefits

In the first-year seminar for Life Design, students create a blueprint of their ideal college experience and learn fundamental design thinking skills to help them navigate any obstacles they encounter.

They’re taught to reframe situations by looking at problems from different angles to discover a new solution or alternative path. Students learn to collaborate, take action and develop skills to adapt and move forward.

Students are also paired with Life Design coaches, who serve as guideposts, pointing them toward helpful resources as they explore, prototype and plan their future.

Now a junior, Signorino said the benefits Life Design provided her during the early weeks of her transition to college were crucial.

“That period of time in your life is such a transformational stage,” she said. “It’s such a big jump from high school to college, and with Life Design, you can really define the truest version of yourself and discover who you are.”

Finding and teaching inner peace

As a part of that self-discovery, Signorino said she developed an interest in meditation and reiki, a hands-on healing technique. After experiencing its many calming and stress-reducing benefits, she became passionate about sharing them with others.

Signorino talked to her Life Design coach, Gabe Dunbar, about leading meditation and reiki sessions for students, faculty and staff.

“I had all these thoughts and ideas bubbling up inside my head and Gabe was able to help me organize those thoughts and turn them into action,” she said. “He connected me with all the right people and encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone.”

In February 2021, Signorino began offering guided meditation and reiki at the Student Recreation Center. She now facilitates sessions twice weekly and offers other mindfulness workshops as requested.

“To be able to help people find calmness and inner peace is equally as fulfilling to me as I feel like it is to them,” Signorino said. “I always feel rejuvenated after leaving those sessions.”

Dunbar said Signorino’s early adoption of Life Design concepts provided a solid foundation that she continued to build upon.

“Maria took action on the concepts learned in class and prototyped them outside of class, which is exactly what we hope students will do,” he said. “She created her own on-campus employment experience focused on meditation and wellness and has also diligently invested in her passion for her major and future career in environmental science.”

Hiking the Appalachian Trail

Signorino, an environmental policy and analysis major, is on track to graduate in fall 2023, a semester early. Signorino said the knowledge and tools she’s gained through Life Design, which aims to help students graduate on time and with less debt, helped lead her to this point.

“I found exactly what I wanted through the life design process,” she said. “I got to live out my passion and create a path to my future career, but now I want to expand beyond this. I want to be out in the real world and test what I’ve learned.”

After graduation, Signorino is embarking on a six-month solo hiking trip along the Appalachian Trail. The trail travels through 14 states from Georgia to Maine and encompasses about 2,200 miles.

To her, the hike is a perfect metaphor for life design.

“Everyone hikes their own hike. Everyone has their own journey,” she said. “You can have people help and aid you along the way, but you’re the one in charge.

“Going through the challenge of hiking up the tallest mountain and feeling so exhausted at the end of the day, but getting up and doing it all again knowing you can is a compelling way to unlock parts of yourself. I’m excited for that process of self-growth, mindfulness and peace.”

            1. Postpartum hair loss

Postpartum hair loss is a significant concern for new mothers, with over 70% experiencing it. This usually occurs around four to five months after giving birth.

During pregnancy, hormonal changes cause hair to remain in a holding phase, resulting in thick and luscious hair.

However, after childbirth, hormone levels return to normal, causing an accelerated shedding phase and leading to thinner, weaker hair.

Practise a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, including biotin, iron, and zinc, to support hair health. Avoid excessive heat styling and opt for gentle hair care practices.

Minimise the use of harsh chemicals, tight hairstyles, and heat tools to prevent further damage.

Consider using hair supplements that contain essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. Incorporate a product like Hair Health Essentials’ NEW MOM Shampoo and Conditioner into your hair care routine.

Enriched with natural ingredients such as Damask Rose, Jojoba Oil, Avocado Oil, and Castor Oil, these products promote healthy hair growth, strengthen follicles, and improve scalp health.

            2. Thinning hair and hair loss

Thinning hair and hair loss affect women of all ages and can have various underlying causes, including hormonal imbalances, genetics, stress, and nutritional deficiencies.

It can lead to decreased volume, reduced self-confidence, and emotional distress. It can happen through different stages of your life particularly through perimenopause and menopause.

Consult a certified trichologist or healthcare professional to identify the cause of your hair loss.

They can conduct tests to determine if any underlying health conditions, such as thyroid disorders or hormonal imbalances, contribute to the issue.

Manage stress levels through relaxation techniques like meditation and yoga.

High stress levels can contribute to hair loss, so finding healthy ways to cope is crucial.

Maintain a well-balanced diet, rich in proteins, vitamins (especially B-complex vitamins), and minerals. Nutrients like iron, zinc, and biotin are essential for healthy hair growth.

Incorporate foods such as eggs, fish, leafy greens, nuts, and seeds into your diet.

Consider scalp massage using essential oils such as rosemary, lavender, or peppermint oil.

            3. Dry and itchy scalp

A dry and itchy scalp can be caused by many factors, including harsh hair products, environmental factors, scalp infections, or underlying skin conditions.

It leads to discomfort, dandruff, and a flaky scalp. Switch to gentle, natural hair care products that are free from sulphates and parabens.

Regularly moisturise your scalp with natural oils like coconut oil, jojoba oil, or argan oil.

These oils help nourish and hydrate the scalp, reducing itchiness and flakiness.

Avoid excessive heat styling and hot showers, as they can strip the scalp of its natural oils, leading to dryness.

Maintain good hygiene and keep your scalp clean. Wash your hair daily using a mild shampoo and conditioner.

Consider using a scalp exfoliant once a week to remove buildup and dead skin cells.

THE SKIN

Dr Laura Lenihan, clinical director and SkinCeuticals brand expert shares the three skincare issues women talk about most.

            1. Rosacea

An inflammatory disease that can present in a number of different ways.

Redness, flushing to the central face or spots would be the most common presentations.

I usually take a skin barrier repair approach, alongside using anti-inflammatory ingredients especially if there are spots associated with it.

Keep the routine simple, a gentle cream cleanser in the AM and PM alongside a niacinamide-based serum (we love Metacell Renewal B3 from SkinCeuticals in clinic) and a moisturiser that really helps strengthen the barrier containing ingredients like ceramides, fatty acids, Squalane.

No one leaves the clinic without an SPF,

            2. Pigmentation

The most important step in anyone’s routine for this is always SPF.

Your SPF should be minimum factor 30 and be broad spectrum so cover both UVA and UVB rays.

If you have pigmentation such as Melasma, it’s worthwhile considering a mineral-based SPF to offer protection against blue light also.

Some of our favourites include Advanced Brightening UV Defence from SkinCeuticals — this is our best seller in clinic as it has added Tranexamic Acid to help work on pigmentation as well.

            3. How can I slow down the ageing process?

I try to trick the skin into acting like its 25-year-old self again by using a range of ingredients that allow us to protect and prevent in the AM and correct at night time.

Everyone needs four key ingredient groups in their skincare routine — SPF, a retinoid, an exfoliating acid, and an antioxidant.

These are the ingredients we have the most science and research behind.

We know how they work and what results we can expect.

In the AM we use an antioxidant and SPF to protect our skin against UV-induced damage and prevent ageing.

Our favourite antioxidant in clinic is CE Ferulic from SkinCeuticals which is one of the most potent on the market.

The PM is when we look at correcting issues.

A retinoid helps speed up our cell turnover, induces collagen and reduces pigmentation, working to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

An exfoliating acid helps shed away dead skin cells. Our favourite is Alpharet overnight cream.

Marie Reynolds, wellness expert

THE EYES

Wellness expert Marie Reynolds has over 35 years experience with a holistic approach to skincare.

            1. Dark circles

These are usually the main area of concern.

It’s not a topical issue but internal — in TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) it can be linked to Kidney Yin or adrenal stress, avoid stressors to the kidneys, things that may dry them out, like spices and ensure a good sleep routine.

Black or dark green foods support the kidneys.

            2. Puffy eyes

These may be linked to allergens and intolerances in foods.

Cut out wheat and gluten for eight weeks, then slowly reintroduce them.

Do a liver cleanse as the liver has so many functions this can cause it to overload. Nettle tea is great.

            3. Fine lines and wrinkles

I call them ‘drinkles’, fine lines of dehydration around the eye area.

Intracellular dehydration is so common, even for those who drink lots of water.

If you do not have any magnesium to pull in water from the outside of the cell to the inside then you will be intracellularly dehydrated.

Repair and supplement with a pinch of Celtic sea salt in water.

This does wonders for this kind of dehydration and topical Eye-Drate is a winner.

Experience Joy and Gratitude with These 20 Mindfulness Exercises

In our fast-paced and busy lives, it can be easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle, leaving little time for relaxation and self-reflection. However, incorporating mindfulness exercises into our daily routines can bring about a sense of joy and gratitude, enhancing our overall well-being. Here are 20 mindfulness exercises that can help you experience joy and gratitude in your everyday life.

1. Start the day with gratitude: Before getting out of bed, take a moment to express gratitude for the new day and the opportunities it brings.

2. Mindful breathing: Take a few minutes each day to focus on your breath. Inhale deeply through your nose, hold for a moment, and exhale slowly through your mouth, releasing any tension.

3. Mindful eating: Pay attention to the taste, texture, and smell of your food. Chew slowly and savor each bite.

4. Gratitude journal: Write down three things you are grateful for each day. This practice helps shift your focus to the positive aspects of your life.

5. Mindful walking: Go for a walk and pay attention to the sensations in your body, the sounds around you, and the beauty of your surroundings.

6. Loving-kindness meditation: Sit quietly and send loving thoughts to yourself, loved ones, and even strangers. Cultivating kindness can bring about a sense of joy and connectedness.

7. Mindful listening: Engage in active listening when talking to someone. Focus on their words, tone, and body language without interrupting or judging.

8. Gratitude jar: Fill a jar with notes of gratitude. Whenever you experience something positive, write it down and add it to the jar. Read the notes whenever you need a boost of joy.

9. Mindful technology use: Set aside specific times to disconnect from your devices and be fully present in the moment.

10. Mindful showering: Pay attention to the sensations of the water, the scent of the soap, and the feeling of cleansing your body.

11. Gratitude meditation: Close your eyes and reflect on the things you are grateful for. Allow the feeling of gratitude to fill your entire being.

12. Mindful gardening: Engage in gardening activities with full attention. Feel the soil, observe the plants’ growth, and appreciate nature’s beauty.

13. Joyful movement: Engage in physical activities that bring you joy, such as dancing, jogging, or yoga. Focus on the sensations in your body and the pleasure of movement.

14. Mindful decluttering: Take some time to declutter a small space in your home. Pay attention to the process, letting go of items that no longer serve you.

15. Gratitude walk: While walking, notice the beauty around you and express gratitude for the wonders of nature.

16. Mindful art: Engage in a creative activity like drawing, painting, or coloring. Focus on the process rather than the outcome.

17. Gratitude letter: Write a heartfelt letter expressing gratitude to someone who has positively impacted your life. Consider sending or reading it to them.

18. Mindful bedtime routine: Before going to sleep, reflect on the positive moments of your day and express gratitude for them.

19. Joyful music: Listen to your favorite music mindfully. Pay attention to the lyrics, melodies, and how it affects your mood.

20. Mindful self-compassion: Treat yourself with kindness and compassion. Practice self-care, forgive yourself for mistakes, and appreciate your strengths.

Incorporating mindfulness exercises into your daily routine can help you experience joy and gratitude. By being fully present in the moment and appreciating the wonders of life, you can cultivate a sense of contentment and fulfillment. Start small, gradually incorporating these exercises into your life, and watch as joy and gratitude become a natural part of your daily experience.
Individuality is a key aspect of the human experience, and this is particularly true when it comes to mental health disorders. No two people experience the same mental health disorder in the same way, and recognizing this individuality is crucial in order to ensure that each person receives appropriate treatment and support.

One of the challenges of mental health disorders is that they can be difficult to diagnose and treat. This is partly because symptoms can vary widely from person to person, even for the same disorder. For example, two people with depression may experience very different symptoms, such as one person feeling constantly sad and another person feeling irritable and angry.

This individuality can also extend to the causes of mental health disorders. While there may be common risk factors or triggers for a particular disorder, such as genetics or traumatic experiences, each person’s unique life experiences and circumstances can play a significant role in the development and expression of their disorder.

Recognizing and respecting this individuality is critical for mental health care providers, as well as for friends and family members who are supporting someone with a mental health disorder. It means taking the time to listen to each person’s story and understanding how their symptoms are affecting their daily life. It also means being open to different treatment approaches, as what works for one person may not work for another.

It’s important to note, however, that recognizing individuality does not mean ignoring or minimizing the shared experiences of people with the same disorder. For example, while two people with anxiety may experience different symptoms or triggers, they can still empathize with and support each other in their shared experience of feeling overwhelmed or frightened.

Ultimately, recognizing individuality in mental health disorders is about embracing the complexity and diversity of human experience. It means acknowledging that mental health disorders are not one-size-fits-all, and that each person’s journey towards recovery will be unique. By doing so, we can create a more compassionate and effective mental health care system, and support each other in our shared goal of achieving better mental health and well-being.
