Allo, a new financial app that can be described as Headspace for personal finance, is aiming to help users meaningfully engage with their finances without becoming overwhelmed with numbers and spending. The idea behind Allo is to help users create a mindful money practice that allows them to approach their earnings, spending, saving, investing and giving with a sense of fulfillment.

Founded in 2021, Allo helps users focus on gratitude and the importance of being aware of not only your numbers, but also your values and priorities when it comes to personal finance.

Allo was founded by Will Choi and Paul Montoy-Wilson, who both previously founded Aviate, an intelligent homescreen startup that was acquired by TechCrunch parent company Yahoo in 2014. With over 15 years of experience in software, the duo wanted to build a company that helps people create positive habits with their finances.

Unlike budgeting apps that only focus on spending categories like bills, insurance and transportation, Allo includes categories like nature, family, giving, working out and healthy eating. Users can choose to have a daily, weekly or monthly check-in with the app in order to become aware of their finances.

“There are plenty of apps out there that will help optimize your net worth or help you save an extra dollar per month and tell you you overspent on a coffee,” Montoy-Wilson told TechCrunch in an interview. “If there’s a budgeting app out there that works for you, that’s great. We’re not trying to take users from budgeting apps that they love. But, the reality is that those budgeting apps don’t work for most people.”

Montoy-Wilson says budgeting apps can make people feel guilty, which can lead them to avoiding their finances altogether. He believes simply being aware of your finances is an important practice, which is why Allo makes it easier to do so in bite-sized chunks.

To get started with the app, users complete Allo’s introductory course and learn from experts on how to feel more peaceful, confident and grateful when it comes to money. The app will ask you to select a few values that you want to focus on, such as health, being generous, exercise and kids. You can then use the values to tag different transactions during your daily, weekly or monthly check-ins.

Once you have set up a check-in, the app focuses on two things when encouraging you to be aware of your transactions. First, the app will encourage you to look at the things you appreciate. You can reflect on the transactions that made you happy, such as the money you spent on your family or well-being.

Next, the app will encourage you to reflect on the transactions that you don’t feel great about and may want to follow up on. For instance, you may see a transaction for a subscription that you intended on canceling beforehand and make a note to do so. Or, you may come across a transaction where you spent a lot of money going out, and don’t see it as a good use of your earnings. By reflecting on this transaction, you could make a note about wanting to instead spend more money on something you actually care about, like your health.

After you have finished looking through your transactions, the app will ask you to check in on your values and select which ones you want to focus on for your next batch of transactions. Say you want to focus on health, you can either decide to just pay more attention to your health-related transactions or actually spend more money in that area by doing things like eating healthier or working out more.

“A core principle of Allo is being aware of your numbers, but also being aware of your emotions,” Montoy-Wilson said. “What we’re trying to do with Allo is make it easier through bite-sized chunks to engage with your finances and start changing your relationship with money. And then making it easier to keep that practice going over and over again.”

Once you have completed your check-in, the app won’t surface anything else until your next one. Allo sees this as an “inbox zero” mentality that will help users set down their phone and not have to focus on their finances until their next check-in.

Over the past year, around 500 people across the United States have been testing Allo. The app is now available to download on the iOS App Store and the Google Play Store. The app offers a free 14-day trial and costs $6.99 per month. The company currently does not have any plans to expand beyond the United States.

Allo is self-funded and Montoy-Wilson says the goal to keep it independent. The company currently does not have any plans to raise funding.

But, just like we all adopted the habit of drinking coffee to feel subhuman or burning our retinas with our phones first thing in the morning, we can also pick up habits in our relationships – both positive and negative.

VICE spoke to counsellor Laressa Donaldson to learn how to recognise good relationship habits and find ways to break-up with the poor ones.

Poor relationship habits

According to Donaldson, poor relationship habits are those that work against the relationship and erode trust, confidence and self-respect. This might look like dishonesty via lying to your partner, omitting important information from them and, obviously, cheating.

As well as dishonesty, there’s also a big difference between giving your partner feedback and criticising them.

“Every relationship requires straight-up conversations, however, it’s all about the way in which we deliver our messages,” says Donaldson.

“If we get into the habit of nitpicking or putting our partner down, it can erode their self-worth, and make them feel like they can’t do a damn thing right.”

Plus, if your partner irritates you to the point that you criticise them negatively, they probably aren’t the person for you.

“Nothing kills the mojo faster than feeling like you have a partner you can never please,” says Donaldson.

Other poor relationship habits include: talking negatively about your partner behind their back, stone-walling or “punishing” them through giving them the silent treatment, and communicating abrasively such as using sarcasm, yelling, condescension and belittling.

“All of these habits are damaging to a dynamic,” says Donaldson. “And if we don’t set high standards for ourselves in the way we communicate, they can rapidly become the norm.”

It’s also important to remember that if you ever feel unsafe (or that the poor relationship habits are turning into abusive patterns) to get help and preferably, get out.

How to fix them

The good news is that, like any habit, we can create new ones.

The first habit Donaldson recommends is to make the time to chat with your partner about your core values, plus anything that’s come up for you during the week.

“It’s unfair to expect others to know our needs without being explicit. Practice stating your needs and asking your partner about theirs.”

Another way to develop new relationship habits is to habit-stack them. For example, if you regularly go for a walk on a Sunday morning with your partner, use that time to check in with one another on how you’re doing and what you could work on in the relationship.

“Plan activities every week that are fun and have a positive effect on your relationship. Often we get bogged down with work and other responsibilities and forget that having fun is integral to life satisfaction,” says Donaldson.

“It means you can stay connected and it’s not extra effort to make time to talk about what matters.”

If there are patterns of poor habits and a shared willingness to reflect on the relationship values, Donaldson recommends engaging in couples counselling.

But, if you no longer enjoy being in your partner’s company, are scared of them, feel you’re walking on eggshells, or even just want a change, it’s a good idea to end the relationship.

“Enjoy your own space, stay in touch with friends and community and don’t lose yourself in a relationship.”

This article was created in partnership with the Ministry for Social Development as part of its Love Better campaign.

Life can feel like a dark forest with no path: you start out with enthusiasm and optimism but you find yourself lost.

If you’re feeling this way I can relate completely.

The key to lighting a torch in the darkness and finding a path starts with changing the habits you do and the things you find normal in your life.

Your journey to change your life lies in changing what you do every day.

Here are the top habits to kick in order to clarify where you want to go in life and how to get there.

1) Complaining

We all have the desire to complain sometimes.

I used to complain so much that I drove away friends and became known as a negative, toxic person.

In a way it was true.

It’s not that I was a die-hard pessimist or even all that weak, it’s that I became so focused on what I found unsatisfying and lacking in my life that I completely embraced the victim mentality.

This was a hard habit to break, but I find that every time I complain excessively I feel noticeably worse and more defeated and downtrodden by life.

Mentioning something unsatisfactory or unacceptable is perfectly fine, but complaining for the sake of emotional venting is generally very counterproductive.

This is a habit everyone should try to break: complain as little as possible, even when you really want to.

2) Catastrophizing

The next habit to drop is catastrophizing.

This is something I also used to do constantly: I would imagine the worst possible scenario or accident happening to myself or people I loved.

Granted this was part of a fairly serious anxiety disorder I was struggling with, but even for those who aren’t facing mental health concerns this remains a serious challenge.

Let’s be honest:

Horrible things can and do happen in life. It’s not bad to be at least aware of that.

But when you try to feel a sense of control by already pre-imagining everything that can go wrong you create a damaging feedback loop that keeps you in a constant state of fear.

3) Procrastinating

Procrastinating happens to almost everyone at some time or another.

But it can quickly become an actual habit, eating up hours and days of your life when you could be doing something productive – or at least enjoyable!

That’s the thing, procrastinating isn’t really the same as relaxing or enjoying yourself.

It’s more often clicking on another YouTube video you’re barely even interested in just to pass the time, or playing a video game because “why not?” even though you actually promised your girlfriend you’d clean the house earlier.

The result of this isn’t just that less gets done, it’s that you lose respect for yourself and stop believing your own promises.

As a result, you slowly start to feel more and more lost in life.

4) Neglecting yourself

In the opposite way that over-indulgence and vanity can become a bad habit, self-neglect is a serious issue.

This is often born from low self-esteem, but it can also be the kind of habit you carry on without even being conscious of it.

I have friends who rarely look after their appearance or style, for example, because they were taught from a young age that they aren’t valuable.

They absorbed certain lessers of low value, often from parents and peers, and as a result end up neglecting themselves and their needs.

5) Hiding yourself

The next unfortunate habit is when we learn to hide ourselves or try to downplay our needs, wants and beliefs.

“What, me? No I’m fine,” you tell your friend as he smokes next to you and gives you asthma.

Hiding your light under a bushel does yourself and others a disservice.

You’re not just undervaluing yourself, you’re also depriving others of all the talents and wonderful things you have to share.

Speak clearly, speak proud, be yourself!

This leads me to the next point…

6) People pleasing

People pleasing is a very sneaky habit that can creep up on you if you’re not careful.

None of us want to clash or have conflicts, but people pleasing crosses the line into considering our decisions and behavior based on how others will receive them rather than on what we truly want.

It’s OK to say no.

And it’s OK to disappoint people sometimes in order to do what’s necessary for your own life and in line with your own values.

7) Seeking validation

A counterpart to people-pleasing is seeking validation.

This is very common in more introverted people and can become a truly terrible and disempowering habit.

It’s important not to seek external validation or approval from other, because it makes you dependent and weakened.

Not only is your self-worth now depending on the next opinion you hear, you’re also potentially opening yourself to manipulators, egoists and bullies who can prey on this need of yours to benefit or take advantage of you in numerous ways.

8) Looking for completion in others

On a related note is the habit of looking for completion in others, especially in romantic partners.

I understand this urge and that it’s easy to say you’re well past it when you actually aren’t…

Being happy with somebody or falling in love with somebody is an amazing experience.

But it’s crucial to ensure you never hinge your self-worth or well-being on the love or approval you receive from another person, even a person you love and care for deeply.

Instead, try to develop yourself as fully as possible and think of romance as a meeting of two whole beings rather than two halves of a whole.

9) Fearing rejection

Rejection hurts. Psychologists have shown it’s connected to our survival system because in our ancestral past rejection was often the same (or worse) than death.

Being kicked out of the tribe or turned down for marriage wasn’t just sad, or a drag:

It potentially meant being cut off from actual food, water, physical protection and a future of any kind.

Rejection hurts no matter what you do. And it will happen in one form or another, whether it’s in friendships, relationships, business ties or family situations.

You can’t stop it from hurting, but it’s crucial not to fear it and not to ever believe that rejection defines your worth.

It doesn’t and it can’t.

10) Chasing drama

On the flipside of fearing rejection and wanting people-pleasing is addiction to drama.

This is surprisingly common, especially in today’s social media-mad age.

It’s true:

Drama, gossip, anger and confrontation can be entertaining.

But in the end it just leaves you feeling empty and wastes your time, especially once the drama circles around to you!

Then it’s not so fun anymore.

The solution is to avoid talking much about others or judging them. It tends to circle back around.

11) Buying into self-defeating narratives

We all have a script that we star in (or play a supporting role in).

That’s our story, our life as we know it.

Make sure that whatever starting setting and details you were given (your basic identity) doesn’t trap you in a cycle.

“Oh I’m just this random guy who grew up poor. I’m nothing.”

“I’m that girl who got bullied in high school, nobody really appreciates me.”

These experiences and painful narratives are real in the sense that they’re almost always based on real trauma and real struggle.

But choosing to continue believing them and cling to them damages you.

It sabotages every area of your life that you let it enter.

It’s crucial to write a new script or at least make major edits:

You’re the hero. You can do this. You will find love. You’re a great person.

This isn’t a mantra or some hokey self-help trick, this is your life. This is who you are and you know this.

12) Buying into overly idealistic narratives

On the flip side of being lost in fears of deficiency and abandonment is being lost in daydreams.

You can end up getting so used to believing in a perfect utopia that you miss the broken but worthwhile world around you.

Idealism can be great when it drives real action.

But it can also be quite divorced from reality and actually weaken your resolve, almost like a siren song leading you away from your goal.

Whether it’s love, finances, future goals or your spiritual journey, make sure you’re not just believing whatever happens to make you feel nice or give you a buzz.

Make sure it’s real.

Be careful of daydreaming and idealizing too much, because real life can pass you by!

Finding your way

Saying goodbye to the following habits will give you a big boost.

There’s no guarantee that everything will be smooth sailing, but that’s just the point:

Life’s already a challenge, don’t make it worse on yourself by engaging in the habits above.

Everyone has their struggles in life, but at least we can do our best to ensure that our struggles are meaningful and part of a path forward!

Share on PinterestA study looks at how eating habits can offset risk factors for obesity. Iryna Auhustsinovich/Stocksy

A new study finds that people who are at higher risk for developing obesity can still mitigate this risk via eating behaviors.

Strategies such as being mindful about what you eat, taking smaller servings and counting calories may even counteract some of the effects of obesity-related genes.

Over the past two decades, rates of obesity among American adults have risen from 31% in 2000 to 42% in 2020, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The modern environment we live in has often been blamed for this rise in obesity, with its easy access to cheap, high calorie food and barriers to regular physical activity.

But genetics can also increase a person’s risk of developing obesity. Some research estimates that genes account for 50% to 90% of people’s weight differences.

According to the authors of a new study, strategies such as mindful or intuitive eating, taking smaller servings, and counting calories may counteract some of the effects of obesity-related genetics.

However, this varies from study to study, which suggests that other factors can influence weight, including conscious changes in eating behaviors.

In the new study, published July 6 in the International Journal of Epidemiology, researchers examined data on over 3,700 adults in the United Kingdom who participated in two separate studies.

Participants’ weight and height were measured, and they provided a blood sample, which researchers used to calculate their genetic risk of obesity.

People also completed questionnaires that measured different eating behaviors, such as a tendency to engage in emotional eating or overeat due to hunger.

Researchers found that people with a higher genetic risk of obesity were more likely to have a higher body mass index (BMI).

BMI is a measurement to assess whether someone has obesity, overweight or underweight. It does not always accurately assess body fat, especially for certain racial/ethnic or other groups.

However, the study results also showed that for people who scored higher for certain types of eating behaviors — called “cognitive restraint” — the link between genes and BMI was reduced.

This included both flexible strategies — such as mindful eating, portion control, and chopping vegetables in advance for easier snacking — and rigid strategies like calorie counting.

“What we discovered for the first time was that increasing both types of restraint — [flexible and rigid] — could potentially improve BMI in people genetically at risk; meaning that restraint-based interventions could be useful to target the problem,” study author Shahina Begum, a psychology PhD student from the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom, said in a news release.

Mindful eating, often called “intuitive eating,” is about consciously paying attention to what you eat without judgment.

Much like practicing mindfulness, mindful eating occurs when you are present with your food and taking the time to savor each bite in the moment.

A 2017 study published in DiabetesSpectrum defines mindful eating as “an approach to food that focuses on individuals’ sensual awareness of the food and their experience of the food.”

Mindful Eating 101 — A Beginner’s Guide

Dr. Supriya Rao, a gastroenterologist and obesity medicine specialist at Integrated Gastroenterology Consultants in Chelmsford, Mass., said the study reinforces what is already known — that exercising restraint when it comes to eating may help some people maintain a healthy weight.

However, “eating patterns have a multifactorial component to them — behavioral, emotional, psychological, cultural, etc.,” she said. “So it’s hard to just use one measure, such as [restraint], to ensure the maintenance of healthy weight.”

However, being mindful of what we eat — as well as when we are eating and why — may help us maintain a healthy weight, said Jennifer Sacheck, PhD, a professor of prevention and wellness in the Milken Institute School of Public Health at the The George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

It’s also important, she said, to pay attention to hormonal cues, such as those for hunger and a feeling of fullness.

Dr. Amy Lee, head of nutrition at Nucific, agrees that being more in tune with your body and aware of your eating behaviors can help you shift how you eat. But she admits this can still be difficult for some people.

Calorie counting and other restrictive behaviors may also be helpful for some people, said Sacheck. In particular, understanding the calorie content of foods can help people become aware of the hidden calories found in energy-dense snack foods, she said.

However, rigid strategies are not typically recommended for longer-term weight loss, she said.

In addition, “there is always a risk of getting carried away with some of these [rigid] strategies that may lead to disordered eating,” she said, “so it is important to not go to extreme measures.”

Endocrinologist Dr. Beverly Tchang, an assistant professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City, and advisor for Ro, said “…given the prevalence of disordered eating among people with obesity, and vice versa, it’s important to be mindful of any weight management interventions that might be ‘triggering’ for the individual who might have a history of these habits.”

While nutrition and physical activity are the foundation for all weight management strategies, Tchang said there are a variety of tools to choose from, such as food logging or mindful eating.

“What works for one person may not work for another,” she said. “So it’s important to find what feels comfortable and sustainable for you.”

Sacheck recommends starting with a balanced diet full of nutrient-dense foods, including a variety of vegetables and fruits, whole grains, and lean sources of proteins.

She also suggests planning your meals and snacks, and cooking and preparing your own food whenever possible. This can help you avoid gravitating to vending machines or fast food restaurants when hungry.

In addition, if certain cues “trigger” a desire to eat — such as driving by a coffee shop or being at your computer at certain times of day — try to change up those patterns, said Sacheck.

And get daily physical activity, she said, which plays an important role in weight maintenance.

In a new study on obesity, researchers examined data on over 3,700 adults in the United Kingdom.

In the study, the people with a higher genetic risk of obesity were likelier to have a higher BMI.

However, the researchers also found that for people who scored higher for certain types of eating behaviors — called “cognitive restraint” — the link between genes and BMI was reduced.

Here are 15 mindful habits to help you live a more fulfilling life.

3. Stay present: Focus on the present moment and try not to get caught up in past regrets or future worries. Take a deep breath and center yourself in the moment.

4. Take breaks: It’s important to take breaks throughout the day to recharge and refocus. Take a walk, meditate, or simply pause and breathe.

6. Practice self-care: Take care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally. Get enough sleep, eat healthy, exercise, and take time to do things that bring you joy.

7. Learn something new: Challenge yourself to learn something new every day. This can be as simple as trying a new recipe or reading a book on a topic you’re interested in.

8. Let go of negativity: Release negative thoughts and emotions. Practice forgiveness and focus on positivity and growth.

9. Set boundaries: Set healthy boundaries in your relationships and work. This means saying no when you need to and prioritizing your well-being.

10. Practice mindfulness meditation: Meditation can help you be more present and calm in your daily life. Start with just a few minutes a day and gradually increase your practice.

11. Engage in creative activities: Engage in activities that allow you to express yourself creatively. This can be anything from painting to writing to playing music.

12. Cultivate self-compassion: Treat yourself with kindness and compassion. Be gentle with yourself when you make mistakes and practice self-forgiveness.

13. Practice empathy: Practice empathy by putting yourself in other people’s shoes. Listen to others with an open mind and try to understand their perspective.

14. Live with purpose: Identify your values and live in alignment with them. This can help you feel more fulfilled and give your life a sense of purpose.

15. Take time for reflection: Take time each day to reflect on your experiences and emotions. This can help you understand yourself better and make more mindful decisions in the future.

A person born today, in the United States, will live an average of 79 years, according to the National Institutes of Health. A hundred years ago life expectancy was much lower, averaging just 54 years. Certainly social factors, technological and medical advances, plus wider accessibility to healthy food, clean water and reliable shelter have changed our longevity game.

These days, though, much of it comes down to you and your habits. Genetics account for about 40 percent of our likely longevity outcome. If your family is long-lived, you’ve got genetics on your side. If your family tends to die young, genetics are not on your side. In either case, 60 percent of your outcome comes down to your habits and choices.

Here are eight habits to embrace and four to break.

Habits to develop:

Being impeccable with your word. Some of you will recognize this as one of the four agreements from the bestselling book by the same name. Being conscientious, or impeccable with your word, is a good habit to develop. Conscientious people make and keep regular medical check-ups. They follow instructions when taking medications. They follow safety guidelines and pay their bills on time. People who do these things can reduce their probability of early death by 44 percent and are at a lower risk for developing dementia.

Nurturing your social connections, friendships and love. Two of the most important factors in leading a longer (and more satisfying) life are forming friendships and experiencing (and giving) love. How to turn love and friendship into a healthy, actionable habit? Call or email one friend each day. Organize a weekly (or monthly) get together with friends. Try getting together over a healthy meal or for a game night. Another simple method? Call or email people on their birthdays. Win-win.

Taking care of your mental health. When we think about health and longevity, the first things that come to mind are eating well, exercise, good sleep and the like. Caring for your mental health is just as important. People who are dealing with serious mental illness die 10 to 20 years earlier than the overall population. A 2019 evaluation of more than 100 studies found that people with mental illnesses die early not primarily because of suicide, but because of largely preventable poor physical health. Dying by suicide accounts for around 17 percent of unnatural deaths among people with mental illness, however for people with depression, for example, there’s a 40 percent higher risk of cardiac disease, obesity or diabetes than the general population.

Changing the way you think about aging. The way we think about something (like aging) is important. There’s a quote from a self-help book that says, “Whatever you believe to be true, whether it is true or not; if you believe it, then to you it becomes the truth.” Becca Levy, in her book “Breaking the Age Code,” cites numerous studies that positive beliefs about aging can lengthen your lifespan by a whopping 7.5 years. That’s a testament to the power of positive thinking!

Moving it. Often. But don’t freak yourself out thinking you’ve got to start running marathons or something. That’s not it at all. If you move for 30 minutes a day, on most days, you’ve got it. That could mean a ten-minute walk in the morning, one after lunch and one in the evening. Maybe you were planning to drive to get a coffee, but it’s only a 15-minute walk. There and back and you’ve checked your movement box for that day. If you work a desk job, get up and walk around or stretch every hour or so.

Learning to mind your money. Creating a solid financial foundation for yourself gives you options as you age. Think about how you might want to spend your time in your 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond. Does a traditional retirement around age 65 sound like a plan? Would that allow you to spend more time, say, bird watching or hanging out with grandchildren? Maybe you want to continue to work, but in a different field. No matter how you visualize your later years, more savings will mean less stress. A good first step is to educate yourself about money matters. Start saving if you haven’t already. It’s never too late. Start by saving a little each month. Then save more. When you have an emergency fund to cover six months of living expenses or so, reduce the amount you put into savings and put the remainder into a retirement account. Money can be a stressful, emotional topic but, if you develop good habits, managing your money can become as routine and un-emotional as brushing your teeth.

Choosing healthier foods most of the time. Eating mostly vegetables, fruit, fish, whole-grain and complex carbs, nuts and cooking with olive oil while reducing the amount of red meat and processed foods is a good plan. The healthiest diet is a Mediterranean-style diet, which is easy to follow with a few key swaps: olive oil instead of butter; a serving of almonds instead of chips; fish instead of fried chicken; brown rice instead of mashed potatoes…you get the picture. Aim to eat this way about 80 percent of the time and allow yourself to eat a burger and fries – or whatever you’re craving – about 20 percent of the time. Everything in moderation, including moderation!

Managing your weight. Your body is a complex machine, and it operates best within optimal parameters. Being overweight is one thing. It’s not the best for you but that’s not what we’re talking about here. Obesity, defined by the World Health Organization, is ‘abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health. A body mass index (BMI) over 25 is considered overweight; over 30 is obese.” A person’s joints, brain, heart and lungs simply can’t work as well if they have obesity.

Habits to break:

Smoking. One in three people who are heavy smokers (a pack a day) at age 35 will die from smoking related diseases before age 85. Even very light smoking, say one or two cigarettes a day, makes you 64 percent more likely to die early. There is no safe level of exposure to tobacco smoke. Smoking kills more than 450,000 Americans each year.

Using too much technology. If we’re not careful, we could end up spending decades in front of one screen or another. This is not good and can shorten and/or reduce the quality of our lives. Bad posture is part of it – sitting hunched over a laptop or bent over a phone screen puts stress on the head, neck, back and shoulders which can lead to chronic pain. Exposure to the light from screens at night can disrupt our natural wake and sleep patterns, AKA circadian rhythms. Too little or poor sleep and chronic pain are two factors known to reduce life expectancy.

Booty time. Spend a lot of time sitting? Stop that! Get up and move around. No matter how active you are, if you sit for six hours a day or more, your mortality rate increases by 20 percent. Why? Too much time parked on your derriere can slow your metabolism, increase risk of cardiovascular disease and decrease the effectiveness of insulin. If you work a desk job, get up and walk or move around every hour or so.

Eating junk food regularly. If fast food, junk food and ultra-processed foods like chips, ice cream, hotdogs and soda make daily appearances in your diet, this is a great time to change that. A study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine took a look at premature deaths in Brazil. It found that in a single year, some 57,000 people between the ages of 30 and 69 died prematurely, and that their deaths were attributable – not just linked – to eating ultra-processed food.

Sinclair, A.O., Ph.D. to found Fully Aligned Co. The research-based organization has one mission: to democratize access to the education and tools required to optimize longevity.

Wellness can be overwhelming and the longevity space is evolving quickly as continual research promises to change the way we approach our health. In fact, Sinclair says in his latest book, Lifespan, “I believe that aging is a disease. I believe it is treatable. I believe we can treat it within our lifetimes. And in doing so, I believe, everything we know about human health will be fundamentally changed.”

With that in mind, we asked Serena to share the most meaningful wellness habits she adheres to now. Her list of non-negotiables cuts through the noise of endless wellness tips and options we find online and brings us back to the basics, as so many longevity pros do.

11 Important Wellness Habits To Adopt Right Now

01 Hydrate | Every cell in your body is made up of water, and all your systems run better if you stay hydrated. I usually recommend that people drink their body weight in ounces each day (so if you weigh 120 lbs, you would drink 120 oz of water each day). I start my day with about 24-30 ounces of warm water with fresh lemon. The warm water serves to stimulate the gastrointestinal tract and peristalsis to keep things moving, while lemons help loosen ama, or toxins, in the digestive tract and quickly flush out these unwanted materials.
02 Eat The Rainbow | “Eating the rainbow” is really the best and simplest piece of nutrition advice. The color of fruits and veggies correlates to different antioxidants, nutrients, or phytochemicals that will provide your body with various benefits. Challenge yourself to eat a fruit or vegetable of every color each day and try to switch up the list on a regular basis. Read Next: 6 Gorgeous Cookbooks That’ll Put You In A Warm Weather Mood

03 Meditate | Meditating is proven to help you control your behavior. Rather than responding from an emotional place, you can train your brain through meditative practices to react calmly, rationally, and more meaningfully.
04 Incorporate Regular Movement | Exercise is an important component of a healthy lifestyle. Moving your body regularly helps to boost mood, get the blood and oxygen flowing through your body and increases perceived energy levels better than a dose of caffeine. Exercise also supports heart health, bone health, mental health, and so much more. I definitely recommend that people make movement of some sort a habit.
05 Put Your Body into Perceived Adversity | When we refer to adversity and threats, this type of healthy stress or restriction protects the body by turning on longevity genes and pathways.
06 Breathe | Breathing is a necessary and often subconscious activity, but taking time to focus on your breath can be a life-changing practice. Deep breathing exercises have been shown to increase energy, relaxation and comfort and reduce anxiety, depression, anger, and confusion. Further, deep breathing activates the body’s parasympathetic nervous system, which can calm a stress response quite quickly. One thing that is great about breathing exercises is that you can do many of them anywhere. Read Next: 5 Unexpected Things That Happen To Your Body When You Practice Breathwork

07 Sleep | Sleep is, without question, one of the most restorative non-negotiables for a healthy, optimal lifestyle. A good night’s sleep allows your body to detox, refresh and reset. There are toxins that accumulate in your brain and your organs, throughout the course of the day, that you detox when you sleep and release when you wake. Simply put, a good night’s sleep helps you function more optimally spiritually, cognitively, physiologically, and emotionally. Getting too little sleep can disrupt eating habits, mood, mental health, and more. Read Next: Do Women Really Need More Sleep Than Men?

08 Nurture Relationships | Keeping up with your real-life social relationships correlates to a longer life.
09 Try a Digital Detox | Setting aside your phone and computer for a while releases your body and mind from constant stimulation. The light and electromagnetic frequencies emitted from computers and phones have been shown to disrupt sleep cycles, and sleep is one of the most important factors for mental, physical, and emotional health. Turn off your phone and head outside to balance out your week of screens with connection to the natural world.

Maintaining good mental health is essential for a happy and fulfilling life. Just like physical health, mental health requires care and attention. Incorporating healthy habits into your daily routine can help improve your mental well-being and overall quality of life. Here are some lifestyle changes that can help promote a healthy mind:

1. Exercise Regularly: Exercise is one of the most effective ways to improve mental health. Regular exercise reduces stress, anxiety, and depression, and boosts self-esteem and confidence. It also releases endorphins, which are natural mood-boosters.

2. Eat a Balanced Diet: A healthy and balanced diet is essential for good mental health. Eating foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals can help improve brain function and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.

3. Get Enough Sleep: Getting enough sleep is crucial for good mental health. Lack of sleep can lead to mood swings, irritability, and anxiety. It is recommended to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night.

4. Practice Mindfulness: Mindfulness is the practice of being present in the moment and paying attention to your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings. It can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, and promote a sense of calm and relaxation.

5. Connect with Others: Social connections are essential for good mental health. Spending time with friends and family, joining a social group or club, or volunteering can help improve your mood and reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation.

6. Practice Self-Care: Taking care of yourself is essential for good mental health. Engaging in activities that make you happy and relaxed, such as reading, drawing, or taking a bath, can help reduce stress and promote a sense of well-being.

7. Seek Help When Needed: It’s essential to seek help when you need it. If you are struggling with mental health issues, don’t hesitate to reach out to a mental health professional for support and guidance.

In conclusion, incorporating healthy habits into your daily routine can help improve your mental well-being and overall quality of life. By exercising regularly, eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, practicing mindfulness, connecting with others, practicing self-care, and seeking help when needed, you can promote a healthy mind and live a happy and fulfilling life.
