The main entrance of Greenwood Community High School is seen in February. A mental health awareness week for students is set to take place there next week.

Daily Journal File Photo

A planned mental health week and community tailgate at Greenwood Community High School will raise awareness of the resources available to students next week.

“Highlight Mental Health” is a week-long event featuring events and informative sessions about support resources for Greenwood students, culminating with a free community tailgate prior to the Woodmen’s football game against visiting Decatur Central on Sept. 29. Anthem Blue Cross & Blue Shield has partnered with the Greenwood Education Foundation, Greenwood Athletic Department and Bring Change to Mind for the event in hopes of letting students know what mental health resources are available to them.

The idea of having a mental health week came from Sarah Lockett, Anthem’s health equity director, who wanted to partner with a local school district on an idea for health and wellness outreach. As Anthem staff did more research, they realized that September is National Suicide Prevention Month, so they decided to look at mental health awareness and how it affected youth, said Lissi Lobb, director of Anthem’s Behavioral Health Program.

They considered partnering with a few different school districts but ultimately chose Greenwood because two of their associates live in Greenwood and have deep ties to the community — including Lobb.

“We felt like that would be a very organic relationship, easy to tap into,” she said.

Anthem first approached Greenwood Athletic Director Mike Campbell about the idea of hosting a tailgate and he was very supportive. As planning continued, the Greenwood Education Foundation became involved, and eventually, it grew into a series of student-led activities leading up to the tailgate, Lobb said.

One student group that has been particularly involved is Greenwood’s chapter of Bring Change to Mind, a group that addresses mental health advocacy. Rather than being a support group, the organization is a way to bring mental health issues to light and tell people how to have positive mental health, said Tanya Fenner, a guidance counselor at the high school.

“I went to a conference where they were presenting, and was really excited about it,” Fenner said. “Then we just decided to start a chapter here at Greenwood.”

Events for Highlight Mental Health Week are primarily on Monday and Friday, as the week was already planned to be College Go week for GCHS students, Fenner said. The name of the mental health week was inspired by the theme of a planned spirit day on Friday, Lobb said.

“The theme for the student section’s football game that week is ‘neon,’ so we really wanted to play up on that neon theme,” Lobb said.

On Monday, football players, cheerleaders and members of Bring Change to Mind will be outside the high school handing out cards that say 988 — which is the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. This is an easy way to start the conversation around mental health and resources, Lobb said.

She has also talked with the school’s broadcast team about possibly holding a podcast with a couple of football players and coaches about mental health. This podcast would feature casual conversations about mental toughness versus mental health, and how someone could have mental toughness on the field and still struggle with issues like anxiety and depression, she said.

“Those two sometimes contradict each other,” Lobb said. “If you’re a football player, you’re seen as being really a tough guy … that may impact you when you are struggling and it makes it more difficult to ask for help.”

Those arriving at the high school for the game and tailgate Friday will be greeted by 988 yard signs all the way down Woodman Boulevard. During the tailgate, mental health-branded items and 988 gear will be handed out to students, including T-shirts, rally towels and stress balls, she said. Food truck, games and prizes will be also be available.

A T-shirt toss by cheerleaders is also planned during the game, Lobb said.

Having an event like this is important as suicide is the second-leading cause of death for high school-age youth, and because studies have shown only half of children and adolescents with a mental health condition receive the treatment they need, Lobb said. Early intervention and mental health support can help youth as they navigate these challenges, she said.

“The community has come a long way when it comes to destigmatizing conversations around mental health,” Lobb said. “But I still think that there’s work to go. We want people to be able to speak freely about their mental health condition as it is a whole health issue and not just an isolated issue.”

People may talk about their physical health issues openly with no fear, but the same is not true for mental health. Engaging them early can help prompt them to be more open and to seek help themselves, she said.

Lobb has been blown away by the response so far by students, administrators and the Greenwood Education Foundation. There was immediate enthusiasm and support from everyone, she said.

“It reinforces that we have such a great community, we have the people there that are willing to lean in and offer their support,” she said. “Making that visible for our young ones so that they don’t feel isolated or alone, that there are people within their own community who really care about them (and) who want to see them succeed.”

It’s really important to let kids know they don’t have to hold things in and can let people know if they are struggling, Fenner said. It’s also important for parents to get involved and be there for their children when they are struggling, she said.

“Ask questions and reach out and make sure that our teens, and everyone, really are OK,” Fenner said. “Talking about mental health, there’s no shame in that and we need to get that out there. There’s no shame in asking for help.”

Lobb also stressed the importance of making sure everyone is aware of the 988 crisis line, which can provide people with immediate access to a mental health professional if they need one.

“Any type of phone call, text, chat — they can ensure that that person who’s reaching out gets the right care that they need at the right time,” she said.

IF YOU GO

Highlight Mental Health Community Tailgate

What: A free community tailgate to promote education and awareness of mental health before the home football game against the visiting Decatur Central Hawks. A food truck, games and prizes will be available, along with free T-shirts, rally towels and more.

When: 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 29

Nike is driving a stake in the ground in Paris this week, a year in advance of the Summer Olympics.

For the first time, the sports brand will host a performance-based extravaganza on Wednesday in the middle of the women’s couture calendar. The immersive event, which is being choreographed by Emmy Award-winning Parris Goebel, a New Zealand dancer and founder of Palace Dance Studio, is titled “Goddess Awakened” — a nod to the mythical Greek character after which the company was named — and will center around a dance performance.

“This is something we’ve never done before,” said Liz Weldon, Nike’s vice president of global women’s brand management. “Paris is an important key city for us with the Olympics being there next year. So we felt it was an important moment to be there and celebrate movement, style and creativity through the collective power of female voices. We’re going to be celebrating womanhood and feminine strength, and the performance will really have a message and a story. And Paris is a great place for us to launch that message.”

The event is part of a larger strategy for the Oregon-based sports brand, Weldon said. For the past several years Nike has been heightening its focus on women, a category it sees as a major growth opportunity. The brand is already the largest women’s footwear and apparel company in the world with sales of $8.3 billion in fiscal 2022, but it has identified the 2020s as the decade of women, where it hopes to further increase its reach.

Last month, Nike unveiled Well Collective, a shift in focus from the brand’s historically competitive sports such as running to a more-holistic approach encompassing movement, wellness, mindfulness and nutrition.

“With the launch of Well Collective, this moment around style and then the women’s World Cup in Australia [at the end of July], we felt it was the right time to touch on all of the facets of serving women more holistically,” Weldon said.

She said Well Collective represents a real commitment from Nike to “expand into a new era led by women’s voices. This is for everyone, but we just feel women are leading the conversation right now around mental health and wellness. We’ve spent a tremendous amount of time listening to those insights to serve more than just the physical body, or what we call mind, body and life.”

Weldon explained the Well Collective centers around five pillars — movement, nutrition, rest, connection and mindfulness — and the company is committing to create products, services and experiences and develop partnerships that can “help people live a better, healthier life.”

 The Well Collective logo.

She pointed to a partnership with Netflix that was inked at the end of 2022 where Nike’s fitness content is being offered on the network. “It’s been incredible to see the amount of engagement in different age groups,” Weldon said. “We’re not trying to target one consumer demographic, we’re trying to get more expansive and inclusive.

“For the last 50 years, we’ve been very proud of our sport heritage and being a very elite competitive sport company,” she continued. “But we’ve heard that can alienate people who don’t feel comfortable with more of that elite competitive drive. So we aspire in the next 50 years, with women’s voices, to actually make the brand more inclusive, less alienating.”

She said that internally, Nike has a rich history studying mind sciences, nutrition, sleep and recovery. “But we’ve never brought that research to the world. Now we feel we can expand on that to serve everyone.”

A big part of this push involves the rebranding of its fleet of 100-plus Nike Live stores to Well Collective units and its @niketraining mobile site to @nikewellcollective. The Nike Live stores are primarily targeted to women and are posting strong results from women’s fitness and lifestyle products, leggings and bras, the company said last week when reporting its fourth-quarter earnings.

The company is also expanding its network of trainers and coaches to more than 1,000 around the world including Deepak Chopra, who recently signed on as a meditation guru and led a session for 70 top trainers at the company’s Beaverton, Oregon, headquarters.

“Nike Training Club has really focused more on hardcore, high-intensity training,” Weldon said, “so we’re expanding the app to have more nutrition services, more mindfulness and breath work to really normalize rest and recovery.”

There will be options for Pilates, walking and dance, the latter of which she said is “a really big one for us,” and the genesis for the Paris event on Wednesday. “The world is expanding the definition of sport and we want to be leaders in that.”

Unlike competitors such as Peloton which charge for their mobile access, the Nike Well Collective content is free. “We have 100 million-plus members and we have the opportunity to touch so many more people if we expand modalities and help them with the other elements of mind, mind-body connection and nutrition,” she said.

Although the focus is on women, Weldon stressed that the content is also designed to appeal to men and children.

“We’ve found that women are actually leading the conversation in these spaces,” Weldon said, pointing to the company’s roster of female athletes such as Simone Biles and Naomi Osaka who have gone public with their thoughts and feelings about mental health and wellness. “I think that’s made it a safe space for our male athletes to start actually having this conversation with us. So what we’ve been finding is as we’re listening to women, it’s actually bringing more people along and opening them up.”

NORTHAMPTON, MA / ACCESSWIRE / May 31, 2023 / In recognition of May as Mental Health Awareness Month and in partnership with CalHOPE, the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health and Dignity Health, on May 25, 2023, AEG’s LA Galaxy forward Javier “Chicharito” Hernández spoke to high school boys’ and girls’ soccer teams from all over Southern California, as well as AEG employees from across the U.S., about the importance of preparing oneself mentally as an athlete.

As a follow up to last year’s “Mental Health & Peak Performance”, this year’s conversation “Focus & Flow: Mental Preparation as an Athlete” took place on the field at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, CA, and featured Dr. Armando “Mondo” González, Psy. D., Founder & CEO, Cheatcode, as he joined Hernández to discuss the science behind mental preparation, insights into the mental preparation of top-level athletes, practical techniques and more.

“Mental Health is a topic that is not only important in professional sports, but also in everyday life,” said LA Galaxy forward Javier “Chicharito” Hernández. “Mental health and wellness are something that I am very passionate about, and this is an event I look forward to again this year. To share my mindset and journey with young athletes and potentially help them in their own journey is priceless.”

“CalHOPE is honored to join the LA Galaxy in providing vital information and resources about mental health wellness. Together we are building community resiliency and helping people deal with stress and anxiety through free outreach, crisis counseling, and support services,” said Autumn Boylan, Deputy Director of the Office of Strategic Partnerships for the California Department of Health Care Services, which oversees CalHOPE.

“Dignity Health is proud to partner with LA Galaxy, CalHOPE, and the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. Collaborative partnerships like this are important to ensuring the overall health of our communities,” said Julie Sprengel, President and CEO, CommonSpirit Health’s Southern California Division. “Raising awareness of the signs and symptoms of mental health concerns, and most importantly teaching youth and teens that it’s okay to ask for help because there are resources and tools available is invaluable.”

Story continues

“LACDMH recognizes the importance of partnering with our diverse communities to meet L.A. County residents where they are. Our Take Action for Mental Health L.A. County campaign for May Mental Health awareness month events exemplifies the collaboration and the village it takes to form an interconnected community support system that promotes empathy, self-care and care for others,” said Dr. Lisa H. Wong, Director of Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. “We are proud to partner with the LA Galaxy on this important conversation and event that I hope will create healthy dialogue, reduce stigma surrounding mental illness and encourage use of DMH and other mental health resources.”
