Lindsay Oberleitner, PhD, Education Director at SimplePractice

In the current digital landscape, the impact of social media on youth mental health is becoming an increasingly pressing concern. Dr. Vivek Murthy, the U.S. Surgeon General, recently issued a call to action, urging tech companies and lawmakers to take immediate steps to safeguard the mental well-being of our children and adolescents.

This timely request is certainly necessary, but it only scratches the surface of a complicated issue.

From my perspective as a psychologist, addiction expert, and researcher who has worked with adolescents in a clinical setting, the narrative becomes even more complex. And, as a mother of three, I’m also personally invested in the well-being of our youth in a world where social media is a ubiquitous presence.

In joining my personal interest in these issues and my professional experience, I hope to provide a multifaceted perspective to this topic. Understanding the unique challenges faced by today’s youth is the first step toward bringing about change that can help end the mental health crisis they currently face.

What the Data Says

According to the Pew Research Center, as many as 95% of U.S. teenagers aged 13-17 report using a social media platform. This is virtually every teen in America.

The Pew research also shows that 35% of teens say they use one of the top five platforms (YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook) almost constantly. This has troubling implications, as a 2019 research study published in JAMA Psychiatry found that people who spend over three hours a day on social media are more likely to develop mental health problems.

Digital World, Physical Harm

Many of the negative effects of youth social media use involve issues of body image and identity. This is likely because social platforms offer countless opportunities for young people to compare themselves with others. And, as a consequence, they may experience feelings of alienation when they feel they don’t meet popular standards for physical appearance.

Numerous studies have reported a correlation between social media use and body dissatisfaction, dieting behavior, and eating disorders among young people. This isn’t just a response to passive viewing of the seemingly perfect lives and bodies cascading endlessly down social media feeds; more troublingly, this is part of an active conversation as young people create and respond to content promoting disordered eating.

Social media is also where cyberbullying happens. According to the Pew Research Center, 46% of teens aged 13-17 have been bullied or harassed online, often over their physical appearance. These online attacks can have severe psychological impacts, leading to depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem.

The Complexity of Adolescence

Adolescence has always been a challenging phase of life, with or without social media. It’s a period fraught with physiological changes, emotional turbulence, and identity formation. As CDC data shows, mental health conditions like depression and anxiety often first surface during this phase of life. The existence of these conditions isn’t just a product of social media; they’ve been long-standing challenges for adolescents. However, social media may be a factor in the record rates of youth depression and suicide we’ve seen in recent years.

Generational trauma and societal pressures compound the challenges of adolescence. Our youth are navigating an environment where the strains of academic achievement, future uncertainties, and societal expectations loom large. Research indicates that these pressures can contribute to stress, anxiety, and other mental health issues among teens. Many teens even take to social media to discuss trauma, and while this can be therapeutic, it can also have an amplifying effect on the trauma itself.

Loneliness has also recently been highlighted by the Surgeon General as a serious harm to health and well-being in our nation, and loneliness is especially complex in young people. Loneliness can lead to both emotional and physical harm.

Despite the many ways in which social media allows us to connect with others both near and far, the nature of those interactions can lead to more disconnection than connection. As Dr. Murthy states, “There can be an assumption that because you’re virtually connected through social media, email or text that somehow that protects you from loneliness. Sometimes it can, but not always.”

Harnessing the Positive Potential of Social Media

Despite the issues that can arise, we must not forget that social media also has transformative potential. Social platforms can be positive places for fostering connections, encouraging empathy, and promoting social activism. For example, many young people use social media to find communities that support their interests, identities, and causes.

However, the key is to ensure that social media usage is healthy and balanced. To do this, we need a comprehensive approach that combines education, digital literacy, mental health support, and community intervention.

The Crucial Role of Caregivers

Caregiving, especially for the youth grappling with mental health issues, requires a profound understanding of the challenges young people face and the right set of tools to address their needs. Digital tools, such as youth-oriented mental health apps, can offer round-the-clock access to resources and support; this can include self-help guides, meditation and mindfulness activities, or direct access to licensed therapists.

Caregivers need to be equipped with knowledge about recognizing signs of mental distress, understanding the impacts of excessive social media use, and learning effective intervention strategies. This includes understanding the signs of cyberbullying, identifying changes in behavior that may indicate social media addiction, and being aware of the potential for social media to distort perceptions of reality.

Digital literacy education for caregivers is also essential; it’s important for caregivers to understand the online environment that young patients spend so much time in. This can help caregivers provide supportive conversations about social media use, establish healthy boundaries, and introduce alternatives to online interaction.

It Really Does Take a Village

A truly effective approach to supporting youth mental health is the “It takes a village” approach, which underscores the importance of a supportive community in nurturing the well-being of young individuals.

Schools are in a unique position to spearhead this effort by integrating mental health and digital literacy education into their curricula. Beyond education, tech companies have a crucial role to play in creating safer online environments. The Surgeon General has also urged enhanced privacy settings, effective content moderation, and tools that can promote well-being to help make social media a more constructive space for young people.

Similarly, lawmakers have a responsibility to create supportive legislative frameworks. These might include policies for stricter regulation of online content, increased public investment in youth mental health services, and legislation that promotes responsible digital behavior. Community support is another essential part of this endeavor; and this includes online communities. The presence of supportive adults and peers in a young person’s life can significantly mitigate the effects of social media.

A Comprehensive Approach to a Complex Problem

The issue of social media and youth mental health is not a one-dimensional problem. It’s a multifaceted challenge, intertwined with broader societal issues and generational narratives. It calls for a comprehensive approach that recognizes these complexities, fosters community support, and places education at its core.

As we navigate this new digital era, it is our collective responsibility to ensure that our young people are equipped with the resilience and skills to thrive, both online and off.

It’s something we talk about all the time; the statistics, the number of people- the number of children- who take their own lives.

988: National Suicide Prevention Hotline

“Every morning you wake up and think about how you can’t wake her up and say good morning. You can never see her again. And you always feel like, like I still go to say something about her, or to talk to her almost. And she’s not there,” Brewer said.

According to the latest data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), in 2021, more than 48,000 people killed themselves. That number jumped by 2.6% last year, when nearly 50,000 people took their own lives.

Here in Oregon, a report released by Lane County Public Health, dubbed ‘Suicide in Lane County’, tells us the numbers in our state are astronomical.

According to that report, Oregon’s suicide rate has been consistently higher than the national average for more than 30 years. It also said between 2000 and 2020, 1,458 people died by suicide in Lane County alone.

Dan Isaacson is a local advocate for mental health awareness in Lane County. He said in 2023 alone, eight children have died by suicide.

“We rank last in mental health care funding around the country, we’re first in addiction,” Isaacson said. “I think oftentimes, we’re at odds because we’re living in conflict with our values. But that’s changing. I mean, we go through our lives thinking this is just normal but it’s not.”

This summer, Governor Tina Kotek and the Oregon Legislature signed six bills to address what some call ‘the behavioral health crisis in Oregon’.

These bills will send funding to various areas; for example, $7.7 million going to child and adult suicide prevention, $4.9 million to community mental health programs for jail diversion services, and much more.

“It’s a drop of the bucket, and it took 40 years to get to this point. It’s not going to be a one legislative session to get out of it,” Isaacson said. “It’s going to require a consistent change in the way we think about the problem, rather than just throwing money at it.”

Isaacson and others said talking about it in our own homes, with our friends and family, will help destigmatize suicide.

Todd Noble is the Public and Mental Health Director in Linn County.

He said one of the main things his team keeps in mind when talking about mental health issues is open-mindedness.

“We don’t want it to be uncomfortable, we want it to be an open discussion, and breaking down stigma,” Noble said.

They do that by keeping a therapist in all of their schools. Noble said that way, you don’t disrupt a child’s day, and it can be much easier to open up about their struggles. And it doesn’t stop at the schools; Linn County Mental Health officials also go to any area to simply talk about suicide prevention and mental health help.

“That’s part of prevention, is not only providing the service, but also breaking down those stigmas and realizing it is not a weakness, we’re all human, and to be human means you’re going to have struggles at times, and mental health is very important,” Noble said.

In Benton County, there’s a strong connection between mental health and law enforcement.

The ‘Crisis, Outreach, Response and Engagement’ team, or CORE, is a relationship between the Benton County Health Department and Corvallis Police. It was created after a 58% increase in calls to police related to mental health services between 2018 and 2021.

“That’s something that we take very seriously, and we make sure our officers are well-trained to respond appropriately to that. Crisis response and deescalation are interwoven into all the training that we give our officers, regardless of topic,” Captain Joel Goodwin said. “Mental health is not something that can be fixed in a 10 or 15 minute window of time, it’s sometimes a lifetime of issues… so from our standpoint, it’s really mostly about how we can connect them with the best resources and get them on path towards a better mental health situation.”

Goodwin said anytime police get a call about someone in crisis, someone from Benton County Mental Health comes along. That’s where people like Eric Bowling come in; he’s the Benton County Program Manager for all things crisis.

“If we were on-site, we’d send one to two people,” he said. “One qualified mental health professional or licensed practitioner do the safety and risk assessment, because our same bar is that of the police departments and sheriff’s department, law enforcement in general — the imminent risk and danger to us to actually take any action. And then we also have the second person who can follow up the next day or the day after and get them connected to services long term.”

According the that report from the CDC, people between the ages of 25 and 65 and older, are at higher risk for suicide.

David Geels is the Behavioral Health Director in Coos County. He said at one point, seven or eight elderly people died by suicide in the county, all around the same time.

He said he and his colleagues tried looking into what may have caused so many people to take their own lives.

“Most of these individuals didn’t reach out for help, there were no indicators they were at risk, most of them had seen their primary care provider within the last month or two, none of them had any significant health concerns either. And so, it was really hard to understand how we would be able to intervene,” Geels said. “You know, a lot of people who are at risk for suicide, they can be very quiet about it, and if there’s not a lot of social people around them who might not notice or engage, it might go unnoticed.”

As we know, it can difficult to talk about what’s going on in our lives; we often don’t want to bother those around us.

But one local man is hoping to change that.

Frank King is an advocate in Lane County. He also is a comedian. The topic of his stand-up routines might be a surprise.

“I am the mental health comedian, which seems like an odd juxtaposition,” King said. “People ask, ‘Wait a minute, a comedian talking about depression and thoughts of suicide? Advocating?”. Well, it runs in my family, it’s called ‘generational depression and suicide.’ my grandmother and my great aunt; I came close enough in 2010. I can tell you what the barrel of my gun tastes like.”

It’s an unconventional way to talk about suicide, to say the least. King uses humor, or in his words funny personal anecdotes to destigmatize mental health issues.

“Helps the difficult topic get digested. Puts people at ease, because it is a taboo subject, even though one person dies by suicide every nine minutes in the U.S., hardly anybody talks about it unless you bring it up. What I discovered was when I brought it up, everybody has got a story,” he said.

Even with people in our communities like King, who are working as hard as they can to make sure everyone feels seen and heard, suicide rates — in Oregon especially — are still high.

Although, according to some data, there was a decrease in suicide rates during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“During COVID we had a consistent talk about mental health, which was great. And there were a lot of bad things that came out of COVID. But one of the gleaming spots that we saw was a reduction in suicide, which we weren’t expecting,” Isaacson said. “And it came from the fact that people were calling people that they wouldn’t normally be calling, or spending more time on the phone that they normally wouldn’t have spent.”

So, with more and more people talking about these uncomfortable topics, what else is holding us back from getting people the critical mental health help they need?

Todd Noble said, it’s staffing. He said we need more qualified people. And as he oversees mental health coverage in Linn, Benton and Lincoln Counties, staffing is the biggest issues these areas and other parts of Western Oregon are facing.

“Traditionally Linn County’s strength has been our mental health program, it’s been one of the strongest in the state, and because we have so much need, and we want to be successful. Linn County is pragmatic, we want to get the work done, but the biggest challenge right now is hiring staff. We don’t know where people have gone, but I think every single business has that issue, and certainly everybody in health has that. Our challenge now is to get our full workforce because there has been no time in any of our lifetimes where we have had more need for behavioral health services, breaking down stigmas, prevention, all of that important work, and that’s why we’re in this work,” he said.

One of the ways Gov. Kotek and the Oregon Legislature hopes to combat these staffing issues, is through Senate Bill 1044 A. It’s giving money for various purposes related to behavioral health treatment. As just one part of the bill, $20 million worth of incentives is being given out to help recruit and retain health care providers in ‘underserved’ areas.

But until those staffing levels increase, experts said the best thing we can do is talk to people.

“We’re all busy, we’re all trying to do a million things at once, but if we just spend a little bit of extra time to spend a little bit more time in the lives of our loved ones and the people we know, to acknowledge and see them, it makes a measurable impact on our community,” Isaacson said.

Even a simple phone call could lead to some much needed, deeper conversations.

And while it can be difficult to open up, parents like Jamie Brewer said to just reach out.

“All the people that love and care about you if you hurt yourself, you’re definitely just passing the pain onto them,” Jamie said. “Because this pain is extremely bad, and I don’t wish it upon anybody.”

“I would say that it could happen to your kid. I didn’t think it would happen to mine. Me and Kaleigha the day before, we were laughing and having such a good mom-daughter day,” Jamie said. “I was just telling her how much I love her that day. And I would tell her all the time how much I love her and I tell her how happy I was to be spending the day with her, and just like it’s such a special day. she was there and she was gone the next day.”

Sponsored Content

We are currently living in a technological era where devices have become indispensable. These gadgets are omnipresent, adorning our everyday lives—from our pockets to our heads and everything in between. Undeniably, our increasing dependence on these tools has prompted us to contemplate the potential impact on our mental state. Let’s delve into some reflections on this matter.

Pixabay image

Will Wearable Technology Help Improve Our Health?

Wearable devices offer the ability to monitor various body parameters. Based on them, you can build personalized training programs and a comprehensive assessment of the body’s condition. They are valuable tools for both short-term and long-term goal planning. Exceeded the daily limit? Receive encouraging words. Sitting too long at work? Get reminders for a quick warm-up and break. Although initially captivating, a study has demonstrated that approximately 30 percent of individuals discontinue their use due to a lack of perceived utility or sheer weariness.

Benefits of Wearable Devices for the Spiritual State of a Person

You can expand your body data management with additional applications. There are hundreds, if not thousands of them on Google Play, but there are up to 10 leaders and the most reliable solutions. Unfortunately, only using a VPN can you unblock them all. A VPN allows you to change your region https://veepn.com/blog/how-to-change-country-in-google-play-store-using-vpn/ and regain access to regionally blocked apps. Considering that VeePN already has 2500 servers in 50+ locations, you will have a fairly extensive selection of servers available.

#1 Stress Reduction

Tailored guided meditation sessions provided by mindfulness tools cater to specific needs, empowering individuals to actively engage in structured practices. These sessions prioritize stress reduction, relaxation promotion, and fostering a sense of calm. According to a study published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research, users have reported effective alleviation of anxiety and depression symptoms with mindfulness meditation apps.

#2 Improved Focus and Productivity

Constant distractions are an inseparable part of the digital age. To combat this challenge and enhance focus and productivity, mindfulness tech serves as a valuable tool. According to research conducted by the University of California, regular use of mindfulness tech can improve attention, cognitive flexibility, and working memory. Practicing mindfulness through apps or wearable devices can train your mind to stay present, reduce mental clutter, and boost concentration.

#3 Emotional Regulation

Mindfulness applications and wearable gadgets frequently remind users to engage with their thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations. A study Journal of Occupational Health Psychology revealed that incorporating technology-based mindfulness interventions led to reduced stress levels and increased workplace happiness. These digital platforms facilitate emotional growth and regulation. People are starting to get better at comprehending and controlling their reactions to diverse situations. All this is useful for enhanced mental resilience.

#4 Convenience

Mindfulness technology eliminates obstacles and brings mindfulness practices within reach for the majority. With just a smartphone or wearable device, you can effortlessly access guided meditation sessions at any time, regardless of your whereabouts or schedule.

#5 Increased Productivity

Wearable devices offer a diverse array of features that boost production by 15%. High productivity is not so much the result of physical strength, but the result of motivation and determination. By nurturing these feelings, wearable technology helps you reach your goals and get satisfaction from doing so. In some aspects, a smartwatch can help: dictate a message, answer a call, or see the stage of a task or the distance traveled.

#6 Relaxing

Wearable technology presents an expansive market opportunity in various entertainment devices. Wireless connections and the Internet of Things (IoT) have ushered in an exciting era for tech enthusiasts, with a plethora of available options. Here are some standout favorites:

Gaming: Virtual Reality (VR) aims to revolutionize video gaming.

Music Quality: Despite the abundance of headphones in the market, there is a growing demand for higher sound quality and innovative features.

IT’S HOT. WHOA. GEEZ. CENTRAL FLORIDIAN DAUNTE MARONE EXPRESSING HOW IT FEELS ACROSS THE WHOLE STATE OF FLORIDA AS WE EXPERIENCE ANOTHER WEEKEND OF EXTREME HEAT. I’VE BEEN TO FLORIDA RESIDENT MY ENTIRE LIFE. WE’RE BOTH FROM FLORIDA AND IT IS THE HOTTEST SUMMER FOR SURE. AND WHILE MANY PEOPLE STILL TRY TO GET OUTSIDE AND ENJOY THE OUTDOORS, DR. Extreme heat can take a real toll on our bodies, physically and mentally. “I’ve been a Florida resident my entire life, and this is the hottest summer for sure,” said Central Florida resident Dante Marone. While many people still try to get outside and enjoy the outdoors, Dr. Vince Callahan warns of the potential harm this heat can have on not only your physical health but mental health, especially once your body exceeds its core temperature of 98 to 99 degrees.”You start seeing a decline in cognition, which is the person’s ability to learn. Their objectivity, critical thinking skills, planning, threat assessment. All of those things, which are part of the frontal lobe, begin to be impacted by the heat,” Callahan said.Callahan has been studying the brain at the doctoral level for 13 years. He says heat has been linked to a rise in violent crime, road rage, suicide rates and hospitalizations for mental disorders.”That core temperature begins to be raised, your processing begins to slow down in your brain, so to speak, and you don’t function as well as you normally would,” Callahan said.Marone says he notices how the heat makes him more irritable.”When it’s hot outside, you’ve been out in the heat for a while. I’m a little bit more irritable. I’m sweating. It’s dripping in my eyes,” Marone said.Callahan says it’s important to drink half of your body weight in ounces of water daily and add drinks with electrolytes. He also says if you are on medication, talk with your doctor to make sure the medication won’t be exacerbated by the heat.”Number three, really stay out of it as much as you can. Don’t be out unless you have to. If you do, go in small increments,” Callahan said.

Our mental health, including stress, self-esteem, and emotional eating patterns, can profoundly impact our relationships with food and exercise. Understanding the complex interplay between mental health and weight loss is crucial for adopting effective strategies and achieving long-term success.

The mind-body connection is vital in determining the success and sustainability of weight loss efforts. This article will explore the fascinating connection between our minds and bodies on the weight loss journey.

Mental Health and Weight Loss: The Vital Link

The link between mental health and weight loss is significant and intricate. Mental health issues, including depression, stress, and anxiety, can negatively impact weight loss efforts. For example, emotional eating or binge eating often arises as a coping mechanism for individuals with mental health conditions, leading to excessive calorie intake and weight gain. Moreover, specific psychiatric medications prescribed to manage mental health can cause weight gain as a side effect, further complicating weight loss.

Poor mental health can disrupt sleep patterns, increase fatigue, and reduce motivation for physical activity. Stress can elevate cortisol levels, contributing to abdominal fat storage and hindering weight loss. However, successful weight loss can positively affect mental health.

Achieving weight loss goals can enhance self-esteem, body image, and overall well-being.

Simultaneously addressing mental health and weight loss is essential for long-term success. Combining therapy, stress reduction techniques, healthy eating habits, and regular exercise can optimize weight loss outcomes and promote mental well-being.

Seeking Mental Health Help is Imperative

Seeking mental health help is essential and imperative on a weight loss journey. The impact of mental health on weight loss is meaningful, as underlying psychological factors can significantly influence eating behaviors, motivation, and overall well-being. Professional support from therapists, counselors, or psychologists can provide valuable tools to address emotional eating, body image issues, and any underlying mental health conditions that may hinder progress.

Through therapy, individuals can develop coping strategies, improve self-esteem, and cultivate a positive mindset toward their weight loss goals. Furthermore, mental health professionals can help individuals navigate the emotional challenges that arise during the journey, offering guidance and support.

Recognizing the importance of mental health and seeking appropriate help can be transformative, leading to a healthier relationship with food, improved overall well-being, and significant success in achieving long-term weight loss goals.

Exploring Your Medical Weight Loss Options

Some scenarios require more than a balanced and nutritious diet and exercise plan to achieve the desired weight, which is where medical weight loss can be helpful. Medical weight loss has recently become a hot-button discussion point for fitness enthusiasts and those facing challenges losing weight through diet and exercise alone.

Weight loss injections have emerged as a standout amongst these modern treatments, but it is critical to avoid self-diagnosis. These are weekly, self-administered injections intended for long-term weight loss.

If you are intrigued about how weight loss injections can help assist you on your fitness journey, you must ask yourself the following question. Ozempic vs Wegovy: which is suitable for my needs?

Both of these injectables contain semaglutide, which belongs to a subset of medications that instruct the body to produce excess insulin, thus reducing blood sugar. These medications also impact your appetite, reducing your overall hunger levels and increasing feelings of fullness, which can make it easier to stick to diet changes.

Your doctor will determine whether Ozempic or Wegovy is suitable for you. These modern treatments include online consultations with your medical provider and self-injectable prescriptions delivered directly to your door.

In-Home Concierge Medicine and Telemedicine Calls Enable People to Get Instant Mental Health Help

In today’s fast-paced world, the availability of in-home concierge medicine and telemedicine calls has revolutionized access to instant mental health help. With the click of a button, individuals can connect with mental health professionals from their homes, eliminating time and physical location barriers.In-home concierge medicine brings mental health providers directly to your doorstep, offering personalized and convenient care tailored to your needs.

Telemedicine calls allow virtual consultations, enabling immediate access to mental health support without travel or lengthy wait times. These innovative approaches provide a lifeline for those seeking mental health assistance, offering timely interventions, therapeutic guidance, and emotional support.

The instant access provided by in-home concierge medicine and telemedicine calls is crucial for individuals in crises or experiencing acute mental health episodes. It ensures that help is available promptly, reducing the risk of escalating symptoms or potential harm.

By leveraging technology, in-home concierge medicine and telemedicine calls have transformed how we access mental health care, ensuring that individuals can receive instant help and support on their weight loss journey and overall well-being.

Last Words

The connection between mental health and overall well-being is undeniable regarding weight loss. Addressing and prioritizing mental health is crucial for long-term success. Emotional well-being affects our eating behaviors, motivation, and self-perception, making it essential to seek professional help when needed.

Researchers have found a link between frequent YouTube use and increased levels of loneliness, anxiety, and depression, especially in users under 29 years old who watch content about others’ lives. They call for limiting YouTube time, encouraging other forms of social interaction, and improving algorithmic systems to guide users toward verified positive mental health content.

Research conducted by the Australian Institute for Suicide Research and Prevention (AISRAP) suggests that regular YouTube users are more likely to experience increased levels of loneliness, anxiety, and depression.

The investigation was led by Dr. Luke Balcombe and Emeritus Professor Diego De Leo from Griffith University’s School of Applied Psychology and AISRAP. They aimed to comprehensively explore both the beneficial and detrimental effects of the world’s most popular streaming platform on individuals’ mental health.

They found the most negatively affected individuals were those under 29 years of age, or who regularly watched content about other people’s lives.

Lead author Dr Luke Balcombe said the development of parasocial relationships between content creators and followers could be cause for concern, however, some neutral or positive instances of creators developing closer relationships with their followers also occurred.

“These online ‘relationships’ can fill a gap for people who, for example, have social anxiety, however, it can exacerbate their issues when they don’t engage in face-to-face interactions, which are especially important in developmental years,” he said.

“We recommend individuals limit their time on YouTube and seek out other forms of social interaction to combat loneliness and promote positive mental health.”

Dr. Balcombe said the amount of time spent on YouTube was often a concern for parents, who struggled to monitor their children’s use of the platform for educational or other purposes.

For the purpose of the study, over two hours per day of YouTube consumption was classed as high-frequency use and over five hours a day as saturated use.

The study also determined more needed to be done to prevent suicide-related content from being recommended to users based on algorithms for suggested viewing.

While ideally, people shouldn’t be able to search for these topics and be exposed to methods, the YouTube algorithm does push recommendations or suggestions based on previous searches, which can send users further down a disturbing ‘rabbit hole’.

Users can report this type of content, but sometimes it may not be reported, or it could be there for a few days or weeks, and with the sheer volume of content passing through, it’s almost impossible for YouTube’s algorithms to stop all of it.

If a piece of content is flagged as possibly containing suicide or self-harm topics, YouTube then provides a warning and asks the user if they want to play the video.

“With vulnerable children and adolescents who engage in high-frequency use, there could be value in monitoring and intervention through artificial intelligence,” Dr. Balcombe said.

“We’ve explored human–computer interaction issues and proposed a concept for an independent-of-YouTube algorithmic recommendation system that will steer users toward verified positive mental health content or promotions.

“YouTube is increasingly used for mental health purposes, mainly for information seeking or sharing and many digital mental health approaches are being tried with varying levels of merit, but with over 10,000 mental health apps currently available, it can be really overwhelming knowing which ones to use, or even which ones to recommend from a practitioner point of view.

“There is a gap for verified mental health or suicide tools based on a mix of AI-based <span class="glossaryLink" aria-describedby="tt" data-cmtooltip="

machine learning

Machine learning is a subset of artificial intelligence (AI) that deals with the development of algorithms and statistical models that enable computers to learn from data and make predictions or decisions without being explicitly programmed to do so. Mindfulness, the practice of being present and fully engaged with the current moment, has gained popularity in recent years as a tool for reducing stress and improving overall well-being. But what is the science behind mindfulness, and how does it impact our brains and bodies?

Research has shown that mindfulness meditation, a specific type of mindfulness practice, can cause changes in the brain’s structure and function. One study found that regular mindfulness meditation can increase gray matter in areas of the brain associated with attention and emotional regulation. Another study found that mindfulness meditation can decrease activity in the amygdala, a part of the brain that plays a role in processing emotions like fear and anxiety.

These changes in the brain can lead to a variety of benefits for our mental and physical health. For example, mindfulness meditation has been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, as well as improve cognitive functioning and overall well-being.

In addition to its effects on the brain, mindfulness also impacts the body. When we experience stress, our bodies release cortisol, a hormone that can have negative effects on our health over time. Research has shown that mindfulness practices can reduce cortisol levels, leading to improved immune function, lower blood pressure, and reduced inflammation.

Furthermore, mindfulness can also impact our behavior and relationships. By being more present and attentive in our interactions with others, we can improve our communication skills and build stronger connections with those around us.

So how can we incorporate mindfulness into our daily lives? One of the most common ways is through mindfulness meditation, which involves focusing on your breath or a specific object while allowing thoughts to come and go without judgment. Other mindfulness practices include mindful eating, where you focus on the experience of eating and savoring each bite, and mindful movement, such as yoga or tai chi.

The key to incorporating mindfulness into your life is to start small and be consistent. Even just a few minutes of mindfulness meditation each day can have significant benefits for your brain and body over time. So why not give it a try and see how it can impact your life?
Mental health is an essential aspect of our overall well-being. It plays a significant role in shaping our behavior, emotions, and thoughts. Mental health is not just limited to our mind; it also has a significant impact on our physical health. Research suggests that the mind and body are interconnected, and any dysfunction in one can affect the other.

Mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, and stress can have a ripple effect on our physical health. The impact can range from increased heart rate to weakened immune function, and even chronic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and heart disease.

One of the most common physical symptoms of mental health problems is fatigue. People with mental health problems often experience physical exhaustion, which can make it challenging to complete tasks or even get out of bed. Similarly, depression and anxiety can lead to chronic pain, headaches, and digestive issues, among other physical symptoms.

Not only can mental health problems cause physical symptoms, but they can also worsen pre-existing physical conditions. For example, people with diabetes or heart disease may experience increased symptoms when they are struggling with mental health problems. The stress caused by mental health problems can lead to elevated blood sugar levels, high blood pressure, and other complications.

Moreover, mental health problems can also impact our immune system. Studies suggest that stress can weaken the immune system, making us more susceptible to illnesses such as the common cold and flu. Chronic stress can also increase the risk of autoimmune diseases such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.

The ripple effect of mental health problems is not just limited to physical health but can also impact our social and emotional well-being. People with mental health problems often experience social isolation, relationship problems, and difficulties at work or school. These problems can further worsen their mental health and lead to a vicious cycle of mental and physical health problems.

It is crucial to take care of our mental health to avoid the ripple effect of mental health problems. Some ways to promote good mental health include practicing self-care, getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, and seeking professional help when necessary.

In conclusion, mental health has a significant impact on our physical health and overall well-being. The ripple effect of mental health problems can lead to physical symptoms, worsen pre-existing conditions, and weaken our immune system. Taking care of our mental health is essential to avoid the vicious cycle of mental and physical health problems.
Athletic performance is not just about physical strength and endurance. It also involves the mind-body connection, which refers to the link between our mental and physical states. Mental health is a critical factor in athletic ability, and it can affect an athlete’s performance both positively and negatively. In this article, we will explore the mind-body connection and how mental health impacts athletic ability.

The mind-body connection is a complex phenomenon that involves the interplay between the brain, nervous system, hormones, and immune system. It is the mechanism that links our thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations. When we experience stress, anxiety, or other mental health issues, our bodies respond in various ways, such as increased heart rate, muscle tension, and sweat production.

In athletic performance, the mind-body connection plays a crucial role. Athletes who have a strong mind-body connection can perform better and recover faster from injuries than those who don’t. For instance, research has shown that athletes who practice mindfulness meditation, which involves focusing on the present moment and accepting thoughts and feelings without judgment, have better athletic performance and recovery time.

On the other hand, mental health issues can negatively impact athletic ability. Anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders can cause physical symptoms like fatigue, muscle tension, and decreased coordination. These symptoms can affect an athlete’s performance, leading to poor results, injuries, and even dropping out of sports altogether.

Moreover, athletes who face mental health challenges may also struggle with motivation, confidence, and focus. These factors are critical in sports, as they affect an athlete’s ability to set goals, remain focused, and perform at their best. Mental health issues can also affect an athlete’s sleep quality, which is essential for recovery and optimal performance.

It is crucial to note that mental health issues can affect anyone, regardless of their athletic ability or fitness level. Athletes are just as vulnerable to mental health challenges as anyone else. However, they may face unique stressors related to their sport, such as pressure to perform, injuries, and competition.

To maintain optimal mental health, athletes need to take care of their minds and bodies. This includes practicing mindfulness, seeking professional help when needed, staying active, eating a healthy diet, and getting enough sleep. Athletes should also prioritize rest and recovery to prevent burnout, injuries, and mental exhaustion.

In conclusion, the mind-body connection is a critical factor in athletic ability. Mental health issues can impact an athlete’s performance and overall well-being. Therefore, it is essential to prioritize mental health alongside physical fitness to achieve optimal athletic performance. By taking care of their minds and bodies, athletes can reach their full potential and enjoy the benefits of sports for a lifetime.
