In the vibrant legacy of Mexico’s cultural history, a new path was forged in the early 20th century — the emergence of the first Baha’i community in Latin America.

RELATED: Yamamoto and Fujita: The First Japanese Baha’is

Rooted in faith and united by a shared vision of world peace, this pioneering group embarked on a remarkable journey, leaving an indelible mark on the spiritual landscape of Mexico. Learn about these historic individuals who planted the seeds of the Baha’i Faith in this diverse nation, likely inspiring a ripple effect throughout the rest of Latin America.

A Brief Overview of the Baha’i Faith

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Baha’i Faith, here’s a brief overview. Baha’is believe that God promised humanity that He will never leave us alone without guidance. So, since time immemorial, God has sent messengers, or Manifestations of God, including Abraham, Zoroaster, Moses, the Buddha, Krishna, Jesus Christ, Muhammad, the Bab, and the founder of the Baha’i Faith, Baha‘u’llah.

In English, Baha’u’llah translates to “the Glory of God,” and Baha’is believe that His coming was prophesied in many of the world religions. The Baha’i writings say:

To Israel He was neither more nor less than the incarnation of the “Everlasting Father”, the “Lord of Hosts” come down “with ten thousands of saints”; to Christendom Christ returned “in the glory of the Father”; to Shí’ah Islám the return of the Imám Ḥusayn; to Sunní Islám the descent of the “Spirit of God” (Jesus Christ); to the Zoroastrians the promised Sháh-Bahrám; to the Hindus the reincarnation of Krishna; to the Buddhists the fifth Buddha.

In 1863, Baha’u’llah announced that He was the latest divine educator to initiate a new era of human history and awaken greater capacities to contribute to the betterment of the world. Baha’u’llah wrote:

I was but a man like others, asleep upon My couch, when lo, the breezes of the All-Glorious were wafted over Me, and taught Me the knowledge of all that hath been. This thing is not from Me, but from One Who is Almighty and All-Knowing. And He bade Me lift up My voice between earth and heaven, and for this there befell Me what hath caused the tears of every man of understanding to flow.

Baha’u’llah was imprisoned for 40 years for announcing that there was a new divine revelation. Although He passed away in 1892, Baha’is have the thousands of original letters, tablets, and books that Baha’u’llah wrote, as well as the writings of Abdu’l-Baha, his son and the authorized interpreter of the Baha’i writings, Shoghi Effendi, the Guardian of the Baha’i Faith, and the Universal House of Justice, the globally elected governing council of the Baha’i Faith. Baha’is also have the encouragement, guidance, and support of the elected National Spiritual Assembly of their country and the Local Spiritual Assembly of their community.

The First Mexican and Latin American Baha’i Community

Between 1916 and 1917, Abdu’l-Baha revealed the “Tablets of the Divine Plan,” letters he wrote to the North American Baha’i community to encourage them to share the unifying messages of the Baha’i Faith across the globe. In the “Tablet to the Bahá’ís of the United States and Canada, he wrote:

Likewise the republic of Mexico is very important. …If one breath of life be blown over them, great results will issue therefrom.

This inspired American Baha’is like Martha Root, Leonora Holsapple Armstrong, Orcella Rexford, Loulie Mathews, and Beatrice Irwin to travel to Latin America and share the revolutionary principles of the Baha’i Faith, including the eradication of all forms of prejudice, the elimination of the extremes of wealth and poverty, the equality of women and men, the agreement of science and religion, the truth and oneness of all religions, the independent investigation of truth, and the importance of a universal language and education.

Pedro Espinosa was one of the first Mexican Baha’is. After a Baha’i woman visited Mexico City in 1936 and spoke to Pedro’s spiritual discussion group, Pedro and several other members of his group declared their belief in Baha’u’llah and His teachings. Pedro’s group became a Baha’i study group, which he led after the Baha’i left the area in 1937. He was also appointed to be a member of the Inter-America Committee, a committee that supported Baha’i activities in Central and South America, that year. In 1938, Shoghi Effendi wrote:

The Inter-America Committee must, at such a stage, nay even before it is entered, rise to the level of its opportunities, and display a vigor, a consecration, and enterprise as will be commensurate with the responsibilities it has shouldered. It should not, for a moment, be forgotten that Central and Southern America embrace no less than twenty independent nations, constituting approximately one-third of the entire number of the world’s sovereign states, and are destined to play an increasingly important part in the shaping of the world’s future destiny.

In 1938, Mexico had nine Baha’is who formed the first Spiritual Assembly of the Baha’is of Mexico City. Pedro Espinosa, María del Refugio Ochoa, Zenaida Jurado, María Luisa B. de Jurado, Aurora Gutierrez, Andrés Basurto, Isabel López, M. Guadalupe López, and E. Castillo represented the first Baha’i community of Latin America. Pedro Espinosa was the chairman, María del Refugio Ochoa was the vice-chairman, Andrés Basurto was the secretary, Zenaida Jurado was the treasurer, and María Luisa B. de Jurado was the corresponding secretary of this Local Spiritual Assembly. They opened a Baha’i center and reading room in the city.

The first Mexican Baha’is

When a person wanted to enroll as a member of the Baha’i Faith in Mexico, they signed a card in Spanish, which, translated, read:

The belief of the Bahá’ís is that this is the Day in which God has established the promised union of all religions, and this is my belief also. The Cause of God appeared through the Manifestation of the Báb; and through the Manifestation of Bahá’u’lláh the laws of God were revealed for all humanity. The administrative institutions of the New World Order were made known by ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, the Center of the Covenant made by Bahá’u’lláh and the Interpreter of His Word. According to the sacred Testament of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá the Guardian guides the establishment of the World Community.

And I, with all my heart, desire to live under this New World Order.

In a letter to Baha’i pioneer, Loulie Mathews, Shoghi Effendi wrote that he placed “the photo of the Mexican Assembly and the Spanish translation…close to the room where Bahá’u’lláh passed away.”

This first Latin American Baha’i community was later invited to the United States and Canada’s national convention. Pedro Espinosa, María del Refugio Ochoa, Zenaida Jurado, and María Luisa B. de Jurado came to represent the assembly. In the National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha’is of the United States and Canada’s 1938-1939 supplementary report, Secretary Horace Holley described these guests as being “radiant in their enthusiasm and ardent in their service to the Faith.” He wrote:

This visit is a great historic event, for it marks the true beginning of that new inter-continental teaching task which the Guardian has expounded for us in The Advent of Divine Justice. We join hands and hearts with these co-workers…

In 1939, Pedro Espinosa helped translate many Baha’i books and prayers into Spanish, including “Some Answered Questions” and “Foundations of World Unity.” He also began sharing the Baha’i teachings in Puebla, Mexico, which led to the first Baha’i community in that city in 1942. The first National Spiritual Assembly of Mexico would be elected in 1961.

Nowadays, there are Baha’is in more than 200 localities in Mexico. As one of the fastest-growing religions, there are more than eight million Baha’is worldwide. Baha’is are in every country and the Baha’i writings have been translated into more than 800 languages.

When we trace the journeys of the pioneers and the first Mexican Baha’is, we’re reminded of the capacity of individuals to generate a profound ripple effect across the globe. As we commemorate the first Latin American Baha’i community, let us, too, be inspired to play our part in building a world that reflects the principles of unity, justice, and peace in every region where we reside.

In the age of exponential technological growth, the fusion of mindfulness and technology may be an interesting reality.

The multidimensional nature of pain, encompassing sensory, cognitive, and affective factors, has long challenged traditional approaches to treatment. The opioid epidemic, a grim testament to our struggle with pain management, calls for innovative, nonpharmacological solutions.

Enter mindfulness meditation, a practice rooted in ancient wisdom, now possibly empowered by technology-supported introspection with Large Language Models (LLMs).

The Power of Mindfulness

Mindfulness meditation, a practice rooted in centuries of tradition, has become a useful tool in modern healthcare. Its essence lies in the cultivation of present-moment awareness, a focused attention that transcends the chaos of daily life. By engaging the mind in this intentional way, mindfulness has been found to significantly reduce pain in clinical practice.

The practice not only attenuates physical discomfort but also addresses the cognitive and emotional aspects of pain, offering a holistic approach to healing. Unlike pharmacological interventions, mindfulness equips individuals with the tools to explore and control their pain from within, fostering a sense of empowerment and self-reliance.

Its ability to offer narcotic-free, self-facilitated therapy makes it an invaluable asset in the fight against chronic pain. In a world grappling with the complexities of pain management and the consequences of opioid misuse, mindfulness stands as an effective option, promising a path to wellness that is both ancient in wisdom and profoundly relevant in today’s landscape.

The Rise of LLMs

Large Language Models, like ChatGPT, represent the cutting edge of artificial intelligence. These models can understand, generate, and engage in human-like dialogue, offering a highly personalized and private resource for information. But what if we could harness this technology to augment the practice of mindfulness?

The Introspective Dialogue

Imagine a dialogue with an intelligent system that understands your pain, guides you through personalized meditation practices, and helps you explore the depths of your consciousness. This “introspective and iterative dialogue” facilitated by LLMs could be the key to unlocking a new utility for mindfulness and meditation.

A Hypothetical Consideration

Let’s consider a world where mindfulness is no longer confined to the meditation cushion but is integrated seamlessly with our digital lives. LLMs could become virtual mindfulness coaches, guiding individuals through pain control techniques tailored to their unique needs and experiences.

This tech-augmented methodology could offer:

Accessibility: Making mindfulness practices accessible to those who may not have access to traditional resources.

Personalization: Tailoring meditation practices to individual needs, preferences, and pain experiences.

Integration: Embedding mindfulness into daily life through devices and platforms already in use.

Empowerment: Empowering individuals to take control of their pain management without reliance on pharmacological interventions.

The fusion of mindfulness and technology may offer a tantalizing glimpse into the future of pain control. By leveraging the power of LLMs, we may be on the brink of a new era where mindfulness is not just a practice but a way of life, augmented and enriched by technology.

The hypothetical consideration of tech-augmented mindfulness is more than a thought experiment; it’s a call to innovate, explore, and embrace the potential of human-machine synergy. It’s a vision of a future where technology doesn’t alienate us from our inner selves but helps us connect more deeply, offering a unique path for pain control that is both ancient and avant-garde.

Lorena Saavedra Smith reflects on how mindfulness helped her navigate challenges through the process of immigrating from Perú to the United States, advocating for the importance of culturally sensitive and inclusive mindfulness practice spaces.

I grew up amidst a civil war in Lima, Perú. My bustling, multiethnic city was congested and often violent. I learned to run and hide at the sound of bombs and be cautious of predators at night, training my young self to be vigilant and prepared for danger at all times. In my early twenties, I took the first chance I had and moved to the United States for a cultural exchange program. Arriving with only a few hundred dollars of my family savings, I took college classes at night and worked as a nanny for an American family during the day. My goal was to further my education in the U.S., move back to Perú, and find a good job that could expand my family’s horizons. The journey would not be easy, but along the way, the practice of mindfulness would become an integral part of my journey, guiding me through unexpected challenges and offering solace in moments of despair.

By bringing an eye of cultural sensitivity to our mindfulness practice and teaching, we can help bridge the gap for people with diverse cultural and spiritual backgrounds.

While I had fallen in love with everything the U.S. had to offer, my experience in America took an unexpected turn. One day, I found myself in an emergency room after suffering an injury. I was completely alone. I realized how far away from my loved ones — my support system — I really was. In that cold and lonely place, the “American dream” felt completely out of reach.

After healing from my physical wounds, I began to work harder than I ever had before. Working hard was the only way to sedate my emotional pain. I didn’t allow myself any downtime. There was no time to rest, so I didn’t. I took on two full-time jobs and numerous side hustles to pay my medical bills while still sending money back to Perú to support my family. Working hard was not an option — it was a survival need.

Eventually, the stress of my work life, unresolved trauma, and anxiety took a toll on my mental health and manifested as depression and self-destructive thoughts. Conventional therapy was beyond my financial means, so I sought alternative ways to bring peace to my troubled mind. I discovered embodiment practices like yoga, meditation, and mindfulness. These new-to-me practices taught me the importance of taking breaks, calming my mind, and listening to both my body and heart.

While movement and somatic practices were excellent allies in finding the connection back to my body, mindfulness and meditation allowed me to bridge the gap between the events of the past and the uncertainty of things out of my control with deeper compassion and towards myself. Contemplative teachings helped me understand my reality, my thoughts, and my emotions in a compassionate way. Through these practices, I was able to unstick myself from the past and live in the present.

My experience is not an isolated story. Many immigrants like myself come to the United States trying to find a better quality of life and more opportunities for ourselves and our families. Many of us arrive having fled the trauma of war, poverty, and violence. We leave everything we know behind with the hope that something greater awaits us beyond the border. Our journey to the U.S. is fueled by our desire for a brighter future and gratitude for the opportunities we find on our way.

But adapting to a new country can, too, be a traumatic experience. The pressure of navigating language barriers, financial difficulties, discrimination, and changing family dynamics can be overwhelming, particularly for those who also fear deportation and the uncertainty of immigration policies. Concealing our cultural identity as a way to assimilate and blend in can lead us to a sense of disconnectedness from our communities, bodies, spiritual essence, and sense of self, negatively impacting our mental health and overall wellness.

There is considerable evidence that mindfulness, in all its forms, can assist in managing stress, depression, and anxiety, but I see a disconnect in how these practices are presented and taught to people like me — individuals from multi-ethnic and multi-spiritual backgrounds facing the unique reality of immigration. As I noticed the difference mindfulness made in my own life, I began looking for a community to practice with. As I started my search for such a community, I quickly realized that I wasn’t comfortable openly talking about my personal struggles and immigration status due to the fear of being “othered” and not feeling like I belong. The majority of the people I found in these communities couldn’t relate to my experience. I longed for a supportive environment where each individual’s experience and insights into mindfulness are valued.

Much has changed since I joined my first mindfulness community. As an adaptation to the pandemic in the last few years, a widespread adoption of virtual technology allowed people with diverse backgrounds and geographical distances to dive deeper into the practice of mindfulness as a means to navigate unprecedented times. More and more institutions and resources are now accessible to a greater and more diverse audience and individuals. As the world moves into a post-pandemic era and in-person offerings are once again becoming available, I’ve been asking, how can organizations continue to foster a supportive environment for individuals who have encountered distinctive challenges, such as those faced by immigrants?

Contemplative practices like mindfulness can be a valuable tool for finding compassion and freedom amidst uncertainty. These practices should be available and accessible to all individuals, but in my experience, they can be presented in a way that may turn away people of various backgrounds. When mindfulness teachings are presented without acknowledging different spiritual beliefs, it may jeopardize how individuals receive it and it can be interpreted as a threat to their own spirituality. They may disengage from the practice altogether, seeing it as incompatible with their spiritual beliefs. Alternatively, they may compartmentalize their life, living a parallel existence where they engage in mindfulness but ignore other spiritual practices, creating a further disconnect and leading to a disembodied spirituality.

Many immigrants come to the U.S. with spiritual backgrounds that are a major component of their cultural identity. These same people tend to resort to their spirituality to alleviate their troubles. When mindfulness groups are not inclusive of different cultural and spiritual backgrounds, there is a risk of participants feeling disconnected from their cultural identity. This can make people feel compelled to leave their cultural heritage behind in order to fit in with mindfulness communities, which can in turn perpetuate ongoing effects of colonization and trauma from previous generations and increase emotional distress due to a sense of disconnection from one’s true self, the world, and a feeling of mutual belonging.

I urge the mindfulness community to create multicultural spaces, both virtually and in-person, for spiritual transformation and reconciliation where practitioners from diverse backgrounds can feel a sense of belonging. We must continue to consider that mindfulness is a tool for emotional regulation, spiritual awakening and transformation while remembering that transformation takes various forms for different people.

It is crucial for mindfulness teachers and group facilitators to ensure that they are culturally sensitive and informed about the diverse spiritual backgrounds of their students and their communities.

Currently, a large number of mindfulness organizations are tailored to the Western mindset, which can have damaging effects on practitioners from different cultural backgrounds who come to the practice. We need a widespread intersection of moving beyond this tailoring, utilizing more inclusive language for a diverse group of people and empowering mindfulness practitioners from multiethnic backgrounds to take the teacher’s seat. We should be receptive to their interpretation and presentation of the state of mindfulness and teachings as informed by their personal experience, and create the space for them to do so.

By bringing an eye of cultural sensitivity to our mindfulness practice and teaching, we can help bridge the gap for people with diverse cultural and spiritual backgrounds. This way, mindfulness can be a practice that supports and benefits all.

Depression is a mental health condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It can be a debilitating illness that can make it difficult to function in daily life, but there are many things you can do to manage it. Taking control of your mental wellness can be empowering, and you can start by creating your own path to mental wellness. Here is a self-help guide to help you on your journey to managing depression.

1. Seek Professional Help

The first step in managing depression is to seek professional help. A mental health professional can help you understand your symptoms and develop a plan to manage them. This can include talk therapy, medication, or a combination of both. You can also consider joining a support group to connect with others who are going through the same struggles.

2. Practice Self-Care

Self-care is an essential aspect of managing depression. This can include getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, and exercising regularly. You can also practice mindfulness techniques such as meditation or yoga to help you manage stress and anxiety.

3. Connect with Others

Social connections are crucial for mental wellness. Try to connect with family and friends regularly, or join a community group or club that interests you. This can help you feel less isolated and provide a sense of belonging.

4. Set Realistic Goals

Setting realistic goals can help you feel a sense of accomplishment and boost your self-esteem. Start small and work your way up to more significant goals. Celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem.

5. Challenge Negative Thoughts

Negative thoughts can fuel depression. It’s important to challenge them and replace them with positive thoughts. Try to focus on your strengths and accomplishments, and practice self-compassion.

6. Create a Routine

Establishing a routine can help you feel more in control and provide structure to your day. Try to wake up and go to bed at the same time each day, eat meals at regular times, and schedule time for self-care and relaxation.

7. Practice Gratitude

Practicing gratitude can help shift your focus from negative thoughts to positive ones. Try to find something to be grateful for each day, no matter how small it may seem.

In conclusion, managing depression is an ongoing process that requires dedication and commitment. By creating your own path to mental wellness, you can take control of your mental health and improve your quality of life. Remember to seek professional help, practice self-care, connect with others, set realistic goals, challenge negative thoughts, create a routine, and practice gratitude. With time, patience, and perseverance, you can overcome depression and live a fulfilling life.
Mindfulness is a practice that has been gaining popularity in recent years due to its numerous benefits for personal growth and self-discovery. It is the art of being present and fully engaged in the moment, without judgment or distraction. Mindfulness involves focusing on one’s thoughts, feelings, and surroundings, and experiencing them without any preconceived notions or biases.

One of the key benefits of mindfulness is that it helps individuals gain a better understanding of themselves. By being present and aware of their thoughts and emotions, individuals can identify patterns and behaviors that may be holding them back from personal growth and self-discovery. This self-awareness allows individuals to make conscious choices that align with their values and goals, rather than being driven by unconscious impulses.

Mindfulness also helps individuals develop a greater sense of compassion and empathy for themselves and others. By practicing non-judgment and acceptance, individuals can cultivate a more positive and compassionate mindset, which can help them develop stronger relationships and a greater sense of connection with others.

In addition to its benefits for personal growth and self-discovery, mindfulness has been shown to have numerous physical and mental health benefits. Studies have found that mindfulness can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, as well as improve sleep quality and cognitive function. It has also been shown to have positive effects on physical health, such as reducing chronic pain and lowering blood pressure.

There are many different ways to practice mindfulness, including meditation, breathing exercises, and mindful movement practices like yoga or tai chi. The key is to find a technique that resonates with you and fits into your lifestyle. It’s also important to remember that mindfulness is a practice, not a destination. It’s a journey of self-discovery and personal growth that requires patience, persistence, and a willingness to be present and open to new experiences.

In conclusion, mindfulness is a powerful tool for personal growth and self-discovery. By cultivating awareness and compassion, individuals can gain a better understanding of themselves and their place in the world. With regular practice, mindfulness can help individuals improve their mental and physical health, develop stronger relationships, and live more fulfilling lives. So why not give it a try and see how it can positively impact your life?
Mindful meditation has been practiced for thousands of years, but it has recently gained popularity in the Western world as a way to reduce stress and increase mental clarity. This type of meditation involves focusing one’s attention on the present moment, while being fully aware of one’s thoughts and feelings. Through regular practice, mindful meditation can help individuals achieve a state of calmness and focus, which can lead to a more fulfilling life.

The Benefits of Mindful Meditation

One of the primary benefits of mindful meditation is stress reduction. By focusing one’s attention on the present moment, individuals can quiet their mind and reduce feelings of anxiety and overwhelm. This can lead to a greater sense of peace and well-being, as well as a more positive outlook on life.

Another benefit of mindful meditation is increased mental clarity. When individuals practice mindfulness, they become more aware of their thoughts and emotions, which can help them to make better decisions and respond more effectively to challenges. This can also lead to greater creativity and productivity, as individuals are better able to focus their attention on the task at hand.

Additionally, regular practice of mindful meditation has been shown to improve physical health. It can reduce symptoms of chronic pain, lower blood pressure, and boost the immune system. Mindful meditation can also improve sleep quality, which can lead to increased energy and improved overall health.

How to Practice Mindful Meditation

To practice mindful meditation, find a quiet and comfortable place to sit or lie down. Close your eyes and focus on your breath, paying attention to the sensation of air moving in and out of your body. As thoughts and feelings arise, simply observe them without judgment and gently bring your attention back to your breath.

It can be helpful to start with short periods of meditation, such as five to ten minutes, and gradually increase the length of time as you become more comfortable with the practice. It is also important to practice regularly, ideally daily, to experience the full benefits of mindful meditation.

In addition to formal meditation practice, individuals can incorporate mindfulness into their everyday life by paying attention to their senses, such as the taste of food or the feel of a warm shower, and being fully present in the moment.

Conclusion

Mindful meditation is a powerful tool for reducing stress and increasing mental clarity. Through regular practice, individuals can achieve a greater sense of calmness and focus, which can lead to a more fulfilling life. By incorporating mindfulness into daily life, individuals can experience the benefits of this practice in all areas of their lives.
Gratitude writing is a simple practice that involves reflecting on the things we are thankful for in life and expressing our appreciation for them in writing. This practice can have a profound impact on our well-being and resilience, helping us to cultivate a more positive outlook and cope with life’s challenges more effectively.

Research has shown that gratitude writing can lead to a range of benefits, from improved mood and greater life satisfaction to reduced stress and better physical health. By focusing on the positive aspects of our lives and expressing our gratitude for them, we shift our attention away from negativity and stress, promoting a sense of calm and contentment.

One of the key ways that gratitude writing can enhance our resilience is by helping us to reframe our experiences in a more positive light. When we face adversity or challenges, it can be easy to focus on the negative aspects of our situation and feel overwhelmed or defeated. By taking time to reflect on what we are grateful for, however, we can shift our focus to the positive aspects of our lives and find new sources of strength and support.

Gratitude writing can also help us to cultivate a more optimistic outlook, which can be crucial for resilience in the face of adversity. When we focus on the good things in our lives and express gratitude for them, we begin to see the world in a more positive light. This can help us to maintain a sense of hope and optimism, even in difficult times.

Another way that gratitude writing can enhance our resilience is by helping us to build stronger relationships with others. When we express gratitude for the people in our lives and the ways in which they have supported us, we strengthen our connections with them and build a sense of community and support. This can be especially important during times of stress or hardship, when we may need extra support and encouragement from those around us.

Overall, gratitude writing is a simple and powerful tool for enhancing our resilience and well-being. By focusing on the positive aspects of our lives and expressing our appreciation for them, we can cultivate a more positive outlook and cope more effectively with life’s challenges. Whether we are facing a difficult situation or simply seeking to enhance our overall well-being, gratitude writing is a practice that can help us to thrive and grow.

How to practice living in the present moment? Follow tips from Spiritual Leader.

Life is the period between birth and death. But can we live our entire life in one shot? Life comprises years, broken down into months, weeks, and days. Each day has 1440 minutes that form 24 hours. Each minute has 60 seconds. Before we even realize it, the second is gone! We can’t stop the second from passing but we can live smiling and laughing. Spiritual Leader AiR Atman in Ravi, Founder of AiR Institute of Realization, explains how we can be in the ‘now’. Regardless of what we do, our mind is never still. In fact, what prevents our minds from staying in the present? It is the mind. The mind swings from the past into the future, bombarding us with toxic and negative thoughts. Because it jumps here and there, we lose the moment in fact, many moments. We lose life itself!

How Does One Live Life In The Present, Moment By Moment?

Letting go of what has passed, not anticipating what is to come and surrendering to each moment as it unfolds. We must realize that we can’t go back to ‘yesterday’, nor can we live in ‘tomorrow’. ‘Tomorrow’ actually never comes! It can go only as ‘today.’ Even ‘today’ cannot appear as a chunk of 24 hours. ‘Today’ can only unfold moment by moment. Those who live with hope and wonder are not as happy as those who live with acceptance and surrender.

Somebody very rightly called this moment the ‘present’. It is a gift to us. It is up to us to make the best use of the present because if we don’t, it will soon become the past that will be gone forever. However, if we grab hold of the present and live it moment by moment, each moment will be a gift to treasure and to be happy.

Unfortunately, most of us live with regrets and worries about the future. The past is over. If we feel guilty about something, we can make amends, apologise or do good to the person we have wronged, but if that is not possible, we must do something good for someone else. Every bad deed we do returns to us. But the better we do, our wrongdoings will be negated.

Not only do we live with past regrets, but we also worry about the future. What is the use of worrying? If there’s a problem and we can solve it, then there’s no need to worry. And if there’s a problem that we cannot solve, then what is the use of worrying? It is best to live with the ABC principle: A accept without protest; B do your best; C in Consciousness, surrender the rest. This is what a seeker of truth or an enlightened person does.

Enlightenment Journey

On the journey of Enlightenment, we realize this simple truth. Our perspective of life changes as we start putting the pieces of the spiritual jigsaw puzzle together.

We contemplate and practise being silent, and we transcend the mind. We discipline the mind, stopping it from thinking to thinking. We still it, and instead of living in the state of mind, we live in the form of Consciousness or thoughtlessness, mindfulness. This is a state where thoughts don’t pour like rain and push us down the drain.

They appear like snowflakes, gently, one by one, for us to discriminate. The intellect is activated, and the mind helps us discern between wrong and right, black and white, the truth and the myth. In this state, we experience peace and bliss. Since the mind is still, it no longer swings from the past to the future. We start living meaningfully in the now. We realize that this moment is all we have and must make the best of it.

Conclusion

Thus, we live moment by moment, accepting and surrendering to the Divine will. We no longer live with guilt or shame or worry, or stress. We realize that whatever is happening is unfolding as per a Divine law, the Law of Karma. What happens in life is the result of our actions, our deeds. Further, we realize this world is only a cosmic drama; nothing is real. It’s a show, and we are actors who do our part; we come and go. We learn to enjoy the show. Positive emotions and thoughts replace negative feelings and thoughts. We live with courage, confidence, faith, trust, hope, love and peace. We realize we are the Divine Soul, a Spark Of Unique Life. We know that we are all a part of the Supreme Immortal Power we call God and that this Power is everywhere and in everything. Realizing the truth, the path of Enlightenment leads to everlasting peace and bliss. Enlightenment is the ultimate goal of life. It is to be enlightened with the reality of who we are not the body, mind and ego, but the Soul. Then we are one with God and with the world.
