In part one, Michael Orona and I explored untold stories of solidarity between Indigenous Yaqui miners and African Americans. In part two, we delved into the power of spiritual courage and resilience. Now, in part three, we turn our focus to how we can promote unity and harmony in society.

The Baha’i writings call us to practice a high standard of love and unity. In a tablet to the Baha’is of the United States and Canada in 1916, Abdu’l-Baha wrote:

The divine friends must be attracted to and enamored of each other and ever be ready and willing to sacrifice their own lives for each other.

Yet, we can only achieve this profound unity through justice. Baha’u’llah, the prophet and founder of the Baha’i Faith, emphasized:

Justice is vital to the establishment of unity and harmony at all levels of society, as it provides the standard by which individual conduct and collective effort are judged. A requirement for living a life of service to humanity, then, is constant effort to develop truthfulness, trustworthiness, and justice, ensuring that they are ever-present in thought and action.

RELATED: How to Be a Better Ally for Racial Justice

Radiance Talley: Hi, Michael! In your novel, “The Brave Ones,” your characters create unity and challenge societal norms through their actions. What Baha’i teachings or personal reflections inspire your vision of unity, and what actions can readers take to promote justice and harmony in their own communities?

Michael Orona: Unity is not just an abstract concept, but a transformative power that can reshape societal structures. In “The Brave Ones,” the unintentional partnership between members of the Indigenous Yaqui community and African Americans represents a profound truth: our shared humanity transcends the artificial boundaries created by racism and discrimination.

The Baha’i teachings of the oneness of humanity are fundamental to my understanding of social transformation. We believe that humanity is like a garden — its beauty lies in its diversity. Just as a garden thrives when different flowers grow together, societies flourish when diverse communities recognize their interconnectedness. This principle guided the development of the characters in my book to look beyond their immediate circumstances and forge a collective path forward.

In my decades of human rights work around the world, I’ve witnessed how unity can emerge from the most challenging circumstances. The Baha’i principle of universal education is crucial here. Education is not just about academic knowledge, but about developing empathy, understanding, and the capacity to see beyond superficial differences. Readers can start by educating themselves about the histories and experiences of marginalized communities.

Michael Orona

Practical Actions to Promote Unity, Justice, and Harmony in Society

Some practical actions for promoting justice and harmony might include:

1. Active Listening:

Truly hear the stories of communities different from your own. Understanding comes before solidarity and collaboration.

2. Amplify Marginalized Voices:

Use your platforms, whether personal or professional, to create space for Indigenous, Black, and other underrepresented narratives. Give these individuals the opportunity to lead discussions and share their unique perspectives.

3. Build Unexpected Partnerships:

Like the characters in my book, seek connections across apparent divides. Unity often emerges from the most unexpected places.

4. Practice Extreme Empathy:

Go beyond sympathy. Develop a genuine commitment to understanding the lived experiences of others. This means spending the time to build lasting friendships.

RELATED: What Is Intercultural Empathy, and Why Is It Important?

My Chihene Apache and Yaqui heritage, along with my belief as a member of the Baha’i Faith, has taught me that justice is not a destination but a continuous journey. Each small act of understanding, each moment of genuine connection, contributes to a more harmonious world.

The story of the Yaqui miners is a microcosm of a larger truth: when we recognize our shared humanity, we can challenge even the most entrenched systems of oppression. It’s not about erasing our differences, but about celebrating them while recognizing our fundamental unity.

I often reflect on a Baha’i quote that says:

The well-being of mankind, its peace and security, are unattainable unless and until its unity is firmly established.

This is not just a spiritual principle, but a practical blueprint for social transformation. To the readers of “The Brave Ones,” I say this: Be courageous. Be curious. See the humanity in every person. The most profound revolutions begin with individual acts of understanding and compassion. Our world doesn’t need more division. It needs more bridges.

Radiance: Absolutely, that’s beautifully said. I would also add that this extreme empathy should result in compassionate action, where people speak up and stand up within their spheres of influence to advocate for the rights of marginalized voices and effect meaningful and lasting change. Thank you, Michael, for taking the time to answer my questions with such wisdom and heart.

At a large university, it can be daunting to find your place among the thousands. Peer organizations provide a smaller circle for students to connect with each other, develop personally and professionally and make the most of their time on campus. In effect, student organization leaders have an important responsibility to mold the student experience for the better.

As we kick off the new year, student leaders have the opportunity to help their peers build a strong foundation for success. In particular, studies show that mental health is a precursor for students to thrive academically. While in college, students are more likely to neglect components of their overall well-being, such as sleep, nutrition and mindfulness, which correlates to worsened anxiety, depression and academic struggles.

Longhorn Wellness Center offers workshops, such as Mental Health First Aid, to equip groups with essential skills for intervention, mental health support and building a safer, healthier community at UT, but it’s up to an organization’s leadership to request these resources.

While building a strong relationship with crucial campus resources, student leaders can actually promote the well-being of the entire UT community by educating and training their organization members. Psychologists suggest that wellness practices cause a “ripple effect” — our words, actions and feelings affect those around us, who in turn impact people around them, and so on. This effect extends not only among peers but also across various facets of an individual’s life, including academic performance and contributions to student organizations.

“Many of us, particularly college students, go through periods in life where we deal with more stress or mental health challenges,” said Katy Redd, CMHC’s Director of Prevention and Development. “So what (LWC and CMHC) can do is come in and provide an opportunity to discuss facts, strategies and behavior. We’re really interested in asking ‘How is this (skill) going to work for you in your life?’”

Group workshops center on topics from self-care to helping a friend in distress. By partnering with LWC to practice these skills, student leaders promote the reach of mental health resources on campus, fostering a network of support.

“There’s a really beautiful connection piece that happens when the peers deliver workshops,” said Angelique Karditzas, Health Promotion Coordinator for LWC.

By giving students the skills to handle crises, these workshops also have the potential to prevent them in the first place. Well-being strategies help students avoid the trappings of overachievement and hyper-performance, reminding them that they are humans first and students second.

“If you, as a student leader, find that your group could benefit from one of these workshops, I think it’s a really good leadership point to be proactive about giving your group this kind of information,” Karditzas said.

Given that the brain is not fully mature until age 20 or later, most students don’t have the emotional regulation and behavioral control to cope with the stress of college. By empowering students to recognize and address distress, they can correct problems surrounding well-being before they become unmanageable.

Within student orgs, improved student wellness shapes team members who are more confident, motivated and productive. Wellness should be at the core of leadership priorities, and LWC workshops offer an avenue for student leaders to fulfill that crucial need while promoting a supportive campus.

Every person has a right to proper mental healthcare, no matter their age, ethnicity, gender, financial status, or location. However, millions of people still lack access to essential health services, such as mental health treatments. Today, the advancement of technology is paving the way for equality in mental wellness.

Technology gives resources and cost-effective solutions to individuals in low-income countries and those who are physically unable to get mental health therapy. Here’s how tech continues to help people from different backgrounds meet their needs for mental health, from self-care applications to telehealth appointments.

MAKEUSEOF VIDEO OF THE DAYSCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT

Mental Wellness Apps (Free and Paid)

From diagnosis to treatments, technology supports people in almost all areas of mental wellness. Applications for self-care, self-assessment, and self-tracking related to mental health are widely available. They have been divided into the following groups:

Meditation and mindfulness apps

Mood tracking and journaling apps

Anxiety and stress management apps

Sleep improvement apps

Therapy and counseling apps

There is no discrimination based on ethnicity in mental health applications. While mental illness affects people of all races, it can also affect people in different ways depending on ethnicity and socioeconomic background. For this reason, there are numerous mental health services that are directed toward people of color with culturally relevant mental health resources.

For instance, the self-care app Shine was created with a focus on underrepresented groups. It offers useful resources for dealing with racial trauma. Technology also provides plenty of other methods to heal from trauma and improve mental health.

Fortunately, most applications for mental well-being are free, but some charge a paid subscription. Not everyone has the financial stability to purchase a wearable device like a Fitbit or pay for stress management applications. However, people from all social classes can practice mindfulness exercises for stress management with free apps like Headspace.

Online Therapy Sessions

The demand for therapy continues to rise, according to a New York Times survey, and often exceeds the number of available mental health professionals, leading to long wait lists. It’s one of the reasons why psychiatrists are among the highest-paid professionals.

Face-to-face therapy can cost anywhere between $65 to $150 per session. Typically, you should attend three to four sessions every month, which can cost you several hundred dollars. In contrast, some online therapy services start at a fraction of that price.

Not everyone can access traditional therapy, especially those who live in rural areas or have disabilities. It also comes with additional expenses like transportation costs, which people who are struggling financially may not be able to afford.

Furthermore, partly due to a lack of awareness, there aren’t as many mental health experts available in developing countries. People may hesitate to seek therapy because of cultural beliefs and values since certain communities may have negative views on mental healthcare.

People from all backgrounds can support their mental well-being at home by using telehealth services.

Online Communities and Support Groups

There is stigma related to mental health, whether it comes from people’s families, communities, or even themselves. Because they are concerned about being treated unfairly, people may feel more comfortable speaking with anonymous people than mental health professionals.

According to research by Deconstructing Stigma, adults and children in the Black community are more susceptible than White people to developing mental health issues. As a result, Jasmin Pierre—a mental health activist—developed the app The Safe Place to remove the stigmas related to mental health in the Black community and to make wellness options more accessible.

Moreover, support groups are formed of people who share similar issues, strengthening their bonds with one another. It can be difficult to locate support groups nearby, but it’s much simpler and more convenient online. You can join online support groups, chat rooms, and forums for mental health by creating an account on sites like 7 Cups.

There are numerous online communities committed to specific subjects. Online support groups are available for dealing with a variety of concerns, including grief, parental challenges, and breakups. Because they are free, people from all socioeconomic backgrounds can access them.

Financial Funding for Mental Well-Being

You could have to pay out-of-pocket for your sessions with some therapists if they don’t accept insurance. Fortunately, most online counseling providers, like Talkspace, accept insurance. Some services allow patients unlimited therapy sessions through live video, audio, and chat.

However, not all insurance providers offer mental health coverage, as insurers have no legal requirement to do so. In these cases, you might ask the provider of the online counseling service for financial assistance.

BetterHelp is one of the providers that offer reduced session fees based on a client’s income and financial standing. It has its own admission procedure and aid requirements. The aid is available to people of all races, genders, and sexual orientations. These facilities are only one example of how technology has revolutionized mental health care.

Technology Helps Spread Awareness About Mental Illnesses

Many platforms, whether social media or online publications, encourage people to open up about their mental health problems. Wherever you are in the world, you may access resources to learn more about mental illnesses.

The stigma surrounding mental health is being reduced thanks to individuals from many cultures sharing their personal stories online. For instance, Kanwal Ahmed, a Pakistani activist, has been posting first-person stories of women battling mental health issues.

Technology has made it simpler to access crisis hotlines, helplines, and services for mental health, which helps contribute to the common notion that seeking assistance when you are dealing with a mental illness is completely normal.

Can Technology Really End Mental Health Discrimination?

There has been a dramatic rise in mental health awareness ever since technology began to be used in mental healthcare. The internet has given people a space to come together without facing discrimination, from informative videos about mental health to campaigns like #MentalHealthMatters.

Certain communities may find it difficult to get traditional mental health care, particularly if the services aren’t personalized to their needs or if there are biases present in the system. Thankfully, the internet offers a variety of mental health resources making access to this care more equitable.

Children’s mental health has received more press coverage in recent years. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children who have died by suicide ages 5 to 11 has increased 15 percent each year from 2012 to 2017.

Dr. Patrick Ward of Ward Therapy Associates, LLC in Williamstown advised of various warning signs of decline in a child’s mental health:

¯ Dramatic changes in normal daily functions like sleep, eating, sexual behavior, socialization, or toileting.

¯ Social isolation

¯ Change in style of play

Words of Affirmation encourage visitors at the North Star Child Advocacy Center in Parkersburg, W.Va.

¯ Change in emotional stability or reactions to different situations

¯ Missing school more than usual

¯ Increase in complaints about pain such as headaches and stomach aches.

Ward said if a parent suspects a child is having trouble, they should have a conversation with them at a quiet time, such as bed time. Then the parents and child can talk to another adult in their life, such as a teacher, school counselor or family doctor.

“I receive referrals to see from school counselors and family doctors all the time,” he said.

A bright, sea creature and ocean themed mural greets visitors at the North Star Child Advocacy Center in Parkersburg, W.Va.

In extreme circumstances such as abuse or neglect, a local organization aims to make a painful process easier.

North Star Child Advocacy Center is a non-profit that partners together local law enforcement, mental health providers, and forensic interviewers under one roof to ensure a child doesn’t have to repeat their story multiple times.

According to Assistant Director Julie Nutter, once a referral is made to the center by either law enforcement or Child Protective Services, North Star staff conduct an intake interview. From there, a team of professionals composed of previously mentioned entities determine what treatment step is taken next.

Nutter said the Child Advocacy model is designed with the patient in mind.

“Prior to a Child Advocacy Center, a child would have to tell their story so many times. They get weary and their story could change. This model allows the child to tell their story one time. More of a conversation that they have with our ladies with a comfortable room.”

In order to avoid the need for intervention, Executive Director Greg Collins has taken a proactive approach.

“We’re trying to get more on the proactive side,” he said. “We’ve been going into schools in our county area and teaching kids about issues they may go through. We’ve noticed a high disclosure rate after these presentations.”

Collins added, “I come from a career in law enforcement. You have to get ahead of a crime in order to stop it. The more you go into schools, you can create awareness.”

According to Collins, 618 kids were referred to North Star Child Advocacy Center in 2022. 461 were from Wood County. Their service area includes Calhoun, Pleasants, Ritchie, Wood, and Wirt Counties.

In the name of prevention, Ward provided a list of activities that intend to increase a child’s mental health:

¯ Limiting screen time

¯ Creating or listening to music

¯ Artistic expression

¯ Free play-unstructured play time that allows a child to be creative and self-directed

¯ Socializing with friends

¯ 15 to 20 minutes for undivided attention from parents

¯ Responsibility-Giving a child something they can accomplish

¯ Spending time outside

Ward said parents watching for their child’s mental health is important.

“I think it’s important because kids want to come to adults but don’t have the words to describe the challenges. They don’t have the insight into themselves yet,” he said.

He added, “children need to know they aren’t alone in their struggles.”

Collins added adults need to be mindful of who is in their child’s company.

“One of the biggest mistakes I’ve seen in my career is parents are afraid to look at people they know suspiciously,” he said. “People think being suspicious makes you a bad person, but it doesn’t.”

Dr. Vincent Hsu had been dealing with the stress of the COVID-19 pandemic for more than a year.

The internal medicine physician from AdventHealth in Orlando, Florida, and his colleagues were worn out as they worked to treat sick patients.

“Every day that came with more patients … we just waited with bated breath,” he told ABC News. “Are we going to be able to have the bed capacity? Are we going to have the staff to take care of them? That was a big unknown.”

He added, “Needless to say, it was a very trying experience because of all those unknowns coupled with the fact that we knew this was not going to be a sprint, this was going to be a marathon.”

Feeling tired, overwhelmed and burned out, Hsu came across a screenshot on his hospital computer. AdventHealth was starting an employee orchestra and it was looking for volunteers.

AdventHealth’s all-employee orchestra’s plays their first performance: a requiem for those who died during the pandemic, summer 2021.

Aside from being a doctor, Hsu is also a classically trained musician and plays violin. He and his wife decided they would audition.

“We both looked at that and said, ‘Hey, maybe this is what we should do, maybe this is something that could help us out,'” he said. “We did not know much of the background behind this, but wow, to be able to do something a little different was really intriguing for us.”

The orchestra was the brainchild of Richard Hickam, director of music and the arts for AdventHealh, who now directs the ensemble.

“I used to teach high school orchestra and I knew that we had several string players in the organization,” Hickam told ABC News. “And I started thinking, we had an event coming up — a conference on mission — where we were kind of talking about what was happening and how we could bond together.”

After getting the support from hospital leadership, Hickam got the word out about auditions.

At first the orchestra started with a strings session made of AdventHealth employees who played violin, viola, cello and bass. However, the orchestra grew to include brass, wind and percussion instruments and now boasts nearly 60 members.

Nurse Ian Barnett, who works out of AdventHealth’s hospital in New Smyrna, is the orchestra’s principal bassoonist. He said being unable to play music when COVID first struck was saddening.

“It was a stressful time,” he told ABC News. “We were the COVID unit in this hospital, so I dealt with it from day 1. And I play music and so all of that was shutdown. And there’s burnout. You get very fatigued. You go home and you do the same routine over and over.”

He said being in the orchestra has done wonders for his mental health.

Dr. Vincent Hsu plays the violin during AdventHealth’s all-employee orchestra’s first performance: a requiem for those who died during the pandemic, summer 2021.

“When we’re playing music and making music together, I’m relaxed and I become centered,” he said. “I think it’s because we’re all together trying to make beautiful music together. It just sort of it centers me. I can’t explain.”

Research shows that music can be beneficial to our mental well-being. According to a study from King’s College London, music can increase production of dopamine, a chemical in the brain linked to feelings of pleasure. It can also lower levels of cortisol, known as the stress hormone.

Additionally, music can also help decrease anxiety and help shift someone’s mood toward positive feelings, according to research from Harvard.

Hickam said there are two music therapists in the orchestra — one plays clarinet and the other plays flute. They’ve helped members promote positive mental health through music.

“They had turned their career towards music therapy, towards helping others and they weren’t able to use their instruments every day [during the pandemic],” Hickam said. “Being able to return again to [an] instrument not only helped them but it helped us as an orchestra … and they can also talk to the orchestra in ways that only music therapists can.”

In summer 2021, the orchestra recorded its first performance, a requiem for those who lost their lives during the pandemic, including their own patients and colleagues.

Then, in December 2022, the first public performances were a series of Christmas concert at Disney Springs and the Orlando Rescue Mission. The group eventually plans to do a full concert season with four performances per year.

Nurse Ian Barnett plays the bassoon during a rehearsal of AdventHealth’s all-employee orchestra, fall 2022.

“Joining the orchestra, being part of that ensemble, to make music and to have that creative outlet … has just really been a godsend for us,” Hsu said. “The music not only has been therapeutic for others but clearly for us as musicians as well.”

He added, “To be able to have an alternative way to express yourself and to work with the same folks in the hospital — it’s a surreal feeling and truly remarkable.”

In today’s fast-paced and highly competitive world, children are often under a lot of pressure to perform well academically, socially, and physically. The constant stress and pressure can often lead to anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. This is where mindfulness comes in.

Mindfulness is the practice of being present and fully engaged in the current moment, without judgment or distraction. It is a skill that can be learned and developed over time, and it has been shown to have numerous benefits for both adults and children alike.

Here are some reasons why schools should promote mindfulness in children:

1. Reduces stress and anxiety: Mindfulness has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety in both adults and children. By teaching children how to be present and focus on the present moment, they can learn to manage their emotions and reduce their stress levels.

2. Improves attention and focus: Mindfulness can improve attention and focus in children, which can lead to better academic performance. By teaching children to focus on the present moment, they can learn to pay attention to their studies and avoid distractions.

3. Enhances social-emotional learning: Mindfulness can enhance social-emotional learning in children by teaching them how to regulate their emotions, develop empathy, and build positive relationships with others.

4. Improves physical health: Mindfulness has been shown to improve physical health in children by reducing stress, promoting relaxation, and improving sleep. This can lead to better overall health and well-being.

5. Increases self-awareness: Mindfulness can increase self-awareness in children by teaching them to be aware of their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. This can help them better understand themselves and their interactions with others.

In conclusion, mindfulness is a powerful tool that can benefit children in numerous ways. By promoting mindfulness in schools, we can help children develop the skills they need to manage stress, improve academic performance, and enhance their overall well-being.

Hope Angioletti is all too familiar with that undue and unrelenting feeling of tension, the one that stems from an impossible quest for perfection and a constant fear of failure. That stress, ironically, was exacerbated by the pursuit of her passions.

The John Jay-East Fishkill student juggles the responsibilities of playing three sports while maintaining a 4.0 grade-point average.

For those who successfully straddle the line of jock and super scholar, it’s not uncommon to endure long and physically tiresome days followed by late evenings of study that easily can turn into early mornings. And, competing at the varsity level in each of the scholastic sports seasons ensures there seldom is an extended rest period, which can take an emotional toll.

“It was a lot for me,” said Angioletti, a senior who has battled anxiety while starring for the high school field hockey, basketball and softball teams. “There was always stress and this feeling like, I always have to do well and it’s all on my shoulders, or I’m gonna let everyone down.”

It was during the 10th grade when that burden became unbearable. She was fortunate that teammates and loved ones noticed the changes, which initiated her seeking treatment.

“I think everyone faces some kind of challenge in life and, at some point, we all need help,” said Hannah Greer, a close friend and softball teammate. “It’s important that people realize that everyone is dealing with something, and it’s okay. You’re loved and appreciated.”

John Jay softball head coach, Larry Brooks gives second baseman, Hope Angioletti a pat on the shoulder before she takes to the field during Monday’s game versus Mahopac on April 24, 2023. The game was played in support of Morgan’s Message, an organization which raises awareness for mental illness in young athletes.

It’s why Angioletti smiled proudly on Monday, standing on a softball field decorated with balloons and signs, and spotting a cluster of home spectators wearing teal-colored shirts with “MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS” emblazoned on the back.

Story continues

John Jay dedicated its game to mental health awareness, the event spearheaded by assistant coach Erin McHugh and supported wholeheartedly by the team. The softball program has partnered with Morgan’s Message, a nonprofit organization that seeks to spread the word and spark conversations about mental illness, particularly among young athletes.

The foundation was started in honor of a college athlete who committed suicide four years ago and her memory, players said, is a reminder of why initiatives like these are necessary.

The T-shirts, worn by the team over its uniform tops before and after the game, featured the John Jay High School emblem alongside the Morgan’s Message butterfly logo, indicating their alliance.

“I have a personal connection with it, and I know a lot of us have struggled with mental health or know people who do,” said McHugh, a former John Jay softball standout who went on to play at Marist College. “It’s something I’m passionate about and, as a coach, it’s important to have a positive impact on and off the field.”

More than 20% of Americans struggle with mental health issues, according to the National Alliance of Mental Illness. And secrecy, often fueled by feelings of embarrassment, can be an impediment to treatment.

“Athletes aren’t necessarily viewed as people who deal with mental health problems, but it’s prevalent and that needs to be recognized,” said Larry Brooks, head coach of the John Jay softball team who also is a longtime school psychologist within the Wappingers district. “We also want kids to know that if there’s a problem, there is help and people who care, and there are resources available to them.”

It also is important, Greer said, that friends and family keep a watchful eye on each other and be attune to even the subtle changes in demeanor.

“Sometimes people don’t want to talk about what’s bothering them, or they think it’ll be a burden on you,” she said. “So, we have to look out for each other and try to pick up on anything that seems off.”

‘You’re not alone in this’

Morgan Rodgers was a Duke University lacrosse player who excelled academically and whom friends described as bubbly and charismatic. But that effervescent personality veiled an inner turmoil that was compounded by an unyielding pressure to perform. Even Morgan’s twin sister was unaware of the depths of her depression.

It wasn’t until after the 22-year-old took her life in 2019 that loved ones discovered the extent of her struggles, her mother said.

A year after her daughter’s death, Dona Rodgers founded Morgan’s Message to help encourage discussions about mental illness among young people and uplift those battling it. The Virginia-based foundation has grown quickly and now is linked with hundreds of organizations, including high schools and colleges across the country.

Locally, Bard and Vassar College are among the schools involved, as is Our Lady of Lourdes High School, whose girls lacrosse program has promoted the foundation for years. Lourdes boys basketball coach Jim Santoro’s wife, Lynn, was Morgan Rodger’s aunt.

“If you’ve made it far in sports, you’ve learned your whole life to ‘tough it out,’” Dona Rodgers said of a potential hurdle athletes face in seeking help. “Mental toughness is brought up constantly, so an athlete might feel weak admitting they’re going through something mentally. But there needs to be an understanding that it’s not weakness. Mental illness should be viewed in the same way as an injury.”

It helped, Angioletti said, when she opened up to teammates and learned that many of them relate to her and faced similar difficulties. They also were a shoulder to lean on, in the figurative sense. On the field, too, she became more at ease with accepting that the team’s success is a shared responsibility.

Being coached by a psychologist, the players said, is a convenient resource they’re fortunate to have.

“Knowing that you’re not in this alone and you’ve got the support of people who genuinely care about you is a tremendous help,” said Angioletti, who recently committed to play field hockey at Hartwick College. “I also write my thoughts in a journal and that really does make a difference.”

Considerable progress has been made in raising awareness and this generation, Dona Rodgers said, is “making a dent in the stigma” attached to mental illness.

Several professional athletes have spoken publicly in recent years about their struggles. Among the most prominent are NBA players DeMar DeRozan and Kevin Love, tennis superstar Naomi Osaka and Olympic gymnasts Simone Biles and Aly Raisman.

“As a coach, you have to take a step back sometimes and remember the players are people before they’re athletes,” McHugh said. “The sport is what you do, not who you are.”

Bouncing back

Nicole Barosa pitched a three-hit shutout and the offense erupted in the third inning as the Patriots capped the event Monday with a 5-0 home win over Mahopac.

The right-hander was masterful, using off-speed pitches and breaking balls to induce soft contact, resulting in several groundball outs.

“Nicole is so humble,” said Greer, a University of Pittsburgh-bound shortstop, “but she’s a rock out there and we look up to her.”

John Jay scored five in the third inning, beginning with Morgan Doughty’s two-run single that sent home Makenzy Lynch and Leah Doughty. Lyla Dwyer drove in a run with an infield single and Arielle Reddick lined a two-run single for the Patriots (5-2).

This victory on a feel-good afternoon, players said, was a necessary rebound from a frustrating 12-run loss to rival Roy C. Ketcham last Friday.

“A win like this shows our resilience,” Angioletti said. “League play is obviously important, and we need wins like these against quality opponents. That was a bad loss, but we bounced back. That’s always important.”
