Inaugural Masterchef winner Julie Goodwin has lifted the lid on the personal price she paid for her sudden rise to fame, revealing she’s been hospitalised multiple times for mental health reasons.

Goodwin, who won the first ever season of Masterchef in 2009, was in New Zealand last week for the Auckland Food Show.

As one of Australia’s most beloved celebrities, she shocked the nation when in 2020 she revealed she’d been admitted to hospital following what she describes as a nervous breakdown.

“Anxiety was a tremendous part of my life. I was constantly in a state of fear. I had severe depression and I felt dread all of the time without quite knowing why,” she told Newstalk ZB’s Real Life with John Cowan on Sunday night.

Advertise with NZME.

“I just kept ignoring all the symptoms before my brain went, ‘well if you’re not going to listen to me, I’ll send it out to your body’. I became physically really sick as well – I had sores on my scalp, shaky hands, ulcerated mouth, dizziness.”

Goodwin is in the process of writing a memoir about her mental health battle, and says looking back at her packed schedule over the last few years for research has been an eye-opening experience.

In the years after winning Masterchef, a number of career opportunities presented themselves for Goodwin. She started running a cooking school, working as a radio host, presenting on TV, and writing books, columns and recipes.

She said balancing all her commitments became overwhelming.

“When I go back to my calendar over the last few years, I think anyone could look at that and see that there’s a crash coming, because there is just too much,” she told Cowan.

“Breakfast radio takes its toll. You have to go to bed at 8pm and get up at 4am, and then I would go from there to my cooking school, which would often take me past the optimum bedtime, and that was every weekend as well. So I was working seven days a week, and they were not eight-hour days.

“There was a fear that if I said no to opportunities, everything would go away. There’s that sense of obligation. And after a while, the decisions were taken away from me because I had a nervous breakdown.”

Before entering Masterchef, Goodwin was a Christian youth worker, and her faith remains an integral part of her life. But she says she was in such a deep hole during that tough period of her life that she found God “hard to find”.

“God went missing, joy went missing. It was a terrible time. I believe with all my heart in the power of gratitude and in finding the good in things and people, and I knew that’s what I had to do – but I couldn’t do it.”

Now, Goodwin is in a much better place. She swims, meditates and sees a psychologist regularly, makes sure to get eight hours sleep, eats well and doesn’t drink. She’s also on medication and now assesses everything through the lens of ‘does this fill my cup, or does it empty me?’

She says it’s been a long journey that continues to this day.

“I’ve been hospitalised multiple times. It’s not a straight line from A to B, from sickness to health – it’s a process that requires a lot of commitment. I have those things in place every day that I have to do every day to keep well.”

Real Life is a weekly interview show where John Cowan speaks with prominent guests about their life, upbringing, and the way they see the world. Tune in Sundays from 7:30pm on Newstalk ZB.

Deviree “Dev” Vallejo, a seasoned real estate broker from Denver, reached out to me back in 2018 to help her scale up her business. At a glance Dev seemed like she had it all – brains, beauty and charisma – but what I uncovered through coaching her was a classic case of imposter syndrome.

When Dev and I started, she was already considered an elite agent but knew she could become more. Specifically, Dev couldn’t understand why she would go from strong to insincere in a nanosecond. It negatively impacted her life and she wanted to change that behavior pattern. While she was no stranger to self-help, having worked with therapists and coaches previously, they hadn’t cracked the code.

To start, I had Dev take a DISC behavioral assessment. It’s a psychological tool used to measure how the brain absorbs information and creates the behaviors that define your personality type (strengths, weaknesses, stressors, conflict management style).

Dev’s assessment identified her as the Dominant (D) personality type with some Conscientious (C) qualities. On good days, she is logic-driven, strong-minded, goal-oriented, strategic and a clear communicator. She comes across as intelligent and confident: a natural leader.

On bad days, she is judgmental, insecure and takes everything too personally. She’s sensitive to feedback, shuts down and tends to blame or find fault with anyone who poses a threat.

The imprinting years

In my work, it is critical to understand my client’s imprinting years: the first 10 years of life. These formative years create the blueprint of our character, dictate our mindset and set behaviors, both good and bad.

Dev grew up in a small family with one older brother in the suburbs of Dallas. She described her family as Catholic and unaffectionate. But she loved her childhood and life in Texas. Her father was dominant force in the family; she was close with her mother and had a good group of friends.

Dev described her younger self as “shy, smart and observational.” She felt her upbringing created a mindset that cycled through shame and guilt – and punished failure. To get affirmation, she excelled in school, achieving top grades.

In a quest for self-discovery as an adult, she made the decision to leave college and explore various service jobs such as bartending, hosting and waitressing. She tried some sales positions too, but didn’t find the right fit until she discovered a career in real estate. She loved that the business was centered on relationships and trust. Hustling to build a business from scratch, she started in a small sphere in Denver and it grew from there.

Building confidence by learning to fail

Upon first glance, Dev does not appear to suffer from a lack of confidence. But that was exactly her problem, so it was the first thing we tackled. I used a confidence model I created to help her visualize how to grow.

Career coach Liz Bentley helped Vallejo take her business to the next level by implementing what she calls the confidence model of coaching.Courtesy Liz Bentley & Associates

We become more confident by taking a risk and having some version of failure that pushes us to adjust, get feedback, and figure out how to succeed. In this process, failure is key!

Confidence is earned from doing hard things, not easy ones. When we finally succeed, we get a newfound belief in ourselves. This forms a resilient mindset to tackle difficult situations knowing that we can have success if we work hard and keep adjusting.

Dev’s imprinting years taught her that failure equated with shame, which led to a painful cycle of guilt and suffering. This led her to see even the smallest criticism negatively. As a child she had evaded failure through being good at school. This also worked for her as an adult as her high intelligence helped her business thrive.

However, when colleagues or clients challenged her, her confidence quickly diminished, giving way to fear. She became intimidated and resented them. She would stop listening, and internally criticized them. Dev was battling imposter syndrome. She appeared to have it all, but believed she didn’t belong and feared being exposed.

She couldn’t get her business to the next level without fixing this problem and building real confidence. To do this, Dev needed to get vulnerable and see the truth. The issue wasn’t that her clients were difficult, it was her!

Mindset shift: Letting go of the need to be ‘smart’

To shift Dev’s mindset about the fear of failure, I discussed how her need to be smart was actually her blind spot. A blind spot is a fault others can see in you but you can’t see in yourself. I often see clients who grew up thinking they were “smart” create self-limitations and insecurity.

Motivated by the fear of not being perceived as smart, they avoid risk, resist change, dislike being challenged, focus on inaccuracies in feedback and don’t put effort into areas that need improvement. For Dev, her version of self-sabotage was “not trying” because if she didn’t try then technically, she didn’t fail.

By recognizing her fears were rooted in her need to look smart, she could shift her mindset on what being smart really meant: the ability to learn, struggle, adjust, and improve. Dev began to see her work very differently. She learned to separate herself from her transactions, not take things so personally, and instead make sure she had done everything possible while seeking opportunities to learn. Now, if she didn’t close a deal, she did not see it as a personal failure, but a situational one.

Mindset shift: Clearing the way for empathy

To further this change, we discussed the importance of empathy. Empathy is our ability to let go of our perspective to genuinely understand others. Dev was naturally empathetic but when she felt threatened that emotion got highjacked.

For example, she’d take her clients’ complaints personally, making it about her and not them. While she might fix their problem, for her it was emotionally exhausting. By understanding her fear of failure, she calmed it and accessed her empathetic emotions. This made a huge shift in her confidence and happiness. She genuinely enjoyed her connection to others.

Stepping into her power

Letting go of her need to be right pushed Dev’s ego out of her way. It opened her ability to take risks and fail without defaulting to shame and guilt. It rewired her thinking about failure and helped her embrace feedback so she could make the necessary adjustments to succeed, which led to greater confidence and an overall feeling of belonging.

Dev also uncovered that her newfound confidence impacted her entire life. Her relationships with her husband and children shifted positively. Struggles she had in her personal life improved dramatically.

She now has a network of top agents across the country and truly knows that her abilities in all areas of her life are limitless.

Harriet Tubman, abolitionist, politician, and Union Army intelligence operative once said, “I had crossed the line. I was free; but there was no one to welcome me to the land of freedom. I was a stranger in a strange land.”

Harriet Tubman circa 1868

It is Tubman’s words that I resonate with when I think of American freedom. America celebrates Independence Day every July 4th with symbolic, colorful fireworks displays. However, as the inaugural celebration took place in 1776, the day designated as the birth of the United States, there was no joy for many in the African American community. While many enslaved Africans fought alongside the colonists against the British in the Revolutionary War, the hope of freedom was a narrative that did not come to fruition. I’m reminded as I reflect on how in 1619, the first enslaved Africans were forced on the land known as the Virginia Colony to begin hell on earth.

Baha’u’llah, the prophet, and founder of the Baha’i Faith, when referencing the importance and purpose of black people compared them to the Black pupil of the eye. That is in the Black pupil is the Divine spirit of creation that shines and provides an important balance in God’s creation of humanity. Man’s false narrative of dominance based upon melanin, eye color, and hair texture in this explanation then holds no credence in the Divine creation of humanity.

That is spiritual truth, but history written from a Eurocentric perspective defines this time and those of African descent as less than human. What saddens me most is I did not learn the truth about black people in my formal education, I did not learn of the majesty of my ancestry and the African continent. I did not learn of the advanced civilization that taught the American colonists how to irrigate land. I did not learn that my ancestors communicated in highly sophisticated ways that did not require words. I did not learn that my ancestors just as with the growth of the European continent, provided advanced education and language translation of text to “America the Free.”

I was taught that Africa was a place of jungles and that my ancestry represented minimal intelligence and animalistic behavior. It was — and is — this Eurocentric bigotry that provided the justification to marginalize and rewrite a false narrative to history. A history that does not acknowledge Juneteenth.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day that Union Army General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas and announced the enslaved were free.

Union Army General Gordon Granger

His message was delivered some two years after the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation set forth by President Abraham Lincoln. While in theory, the enslaved were free, these rules did not apply to Texas, specifically in Galveston, the birthplace of Juneteenth. This is based on a few factors:

250,000 enslaved individuals of the Africana Community provided for the wealth of the Texas economy as unpaid labor.

The news that Confederate Army General Robert E. Lee had surrendered in Western Texas took more than two months to spread.

The Emancipation Proclamation wasn’t enforced in Texas.

Slavers in Texas beat, lynched, and murdered the freed people that tried to leave plantations.

On the first anniversary of Juneteenth, the vastly emerging segregation laws prohibited the use of public places and parks to celebrate the holiday.

And just as U.S. history has marginalized, and to much extent does not mention the many contributions of the African American community to the foundation and continuum of growth in the country, it is no surprise to me that Juneteenth is still not a national holiday. That it is not is evidence that the cancer of racism still exists in the United States — a cancer that ignited the Civil Rights Movement, the Power Movement, and most recently, the Black Lives Matter movement, which all advocate for truth and justice for the black community in America.

As I reflect on my religious community, the Baha’i Faith, I see a microcosm in some respects to the many challenges in the United States. As Barbara Talley, a longtime Baha’i and visionary behind the “Pupil of the Eye” conference stated in a recent interview with Bahai.us, “The pupil is essential for light, and without the pupil the person is blind. Humanity needs this light, which only the dark people can provide.”

I feel that Juneteenth should be a celebration and national holiday with the same promotion as America’s Independence Day. Juneteenth is the symbolic representation of the ultimate sacrifice paid by the many souls who fought for freedom and justice. It is a representation of the continued struggle for all to strive and work towards in small and large efforts as Baha’u’llah explained, “The earth is but one country and mankind its citizens.”

As we are in a time where protests are happening across the nation. I see individuals of different ethnic backgrounds marching and holding signs that predominantly say, “Black Lives Matter.” I hope these individuals really know just how much the lives of black people matter. Now is the time to exemplify the true history of America. My family, spread from Texas to Mississippi fought for freedom so that one day, their descendants, could have opportunities. For them I work as hard as I can each day as an academic, as a social justice community organizer, as a filmmaker, as a husband, as a son, and most importantly, as a world citizen of God.

The people of African descent, the African community matter, and Juneteenth is a celebratory time to honor the truth of the words written so long ago, “We the People” —people who built this country and continue to provide to the diversity and richness of the world. The Pupil of the Eye, as ordained by almighty God, you must know that you matter, your voice matters, your efforts, matter. As the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable… Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.”

Mental health challenges are a common occurrence, yet many people still shy away from discussing them openly due to the stigma that surrounds these issues. However, it is important to acknowledge that mental health is a crucial aspect of our overall well-being, and ignoring it can have detrimental effects on our lives.

The stigma around mental health can make it difficult for individuals to seek the help they need, leaving them feeling isolated and alone. But by sharing real stories of individuals who have overcome their mental health challenges, we can begin to shatter the stigma and encourage others to seek the help they need.

One such story is that of John, who struggled with depression for several years. He tried to cope with his feelings alone, but eventually realized that he needed help. John sought the help of a therapist, who helped him identify the root cause of his depression. With the therapist’s guidance, John was able to develop coping strategies that helped him overcome his depression.

Another story is that of Sarah, who struggled with anxiety for most of her life. She was afraid to speak out about her feelings, fearing that she would be judged or dismissed. However, Sarah eventually realized that her anxiety was holding her back from living the life she wanted. She sought the help of a therapist, who helped her develop coping strategies to manage her anxiety. Through therapy, Sarah also learned to express her feelings and communicate more effectively, which helped her build stronger relationships with others.

These stories show that mental health challenges can affect anyone, regardless of their background or circumstances. However, they also show that there is hope for those struggling with these issues. By seeking help and developing coping strategies, individuals can overcome their mental health challenges and live fulfilling lives.

It is important to remember that seeking help for mental health challenges is not a sign of weakness. In fact, it takes a great deal of courage to acknowledge that you need help and to take steps to improve your mental health. By sharing real stories of individuals who have overcome their mental health challenges, we can encourage others to seek the help they need and shatter the stigma that surrounds mental health issues.

In conclusion, mental health challenges are a common occurrence, but they can be overcome with the right help and support. By sharing real stories of individuals who have overcome their mental health challenges, we can shatter the stigma that surrounds mental health issues and encourage others to seek the help they need. Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness, and it can lead to a happier, healthier life.
Mental health disorders affect millions of people worldwide, yet there remains a significant stigma surrounding them. This stigma often prevents people from seeking treatment, leading to a worsening of symptoms and a lower quality of life. To break down this stigma, it is essential to address the real causes of mental health disorders.

One of the most significant contributors to mental health disorders is stress. Stress can be caused by a wide range of factors, including work, family, finances, and relationships. When stress becomes chronic, it can lead to anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders.

Another factor that can contribute to mental health disorders is trauma. Trauma can be caused by a wide range of experiences, including physical or emotional abuse, neglect, or witnessing a traumatic event. Trauma can lead to a range of mental health disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression.

Genetics can also play a role in mental health disorders. Research has shown that certain genetic factors can increase the risk of developing mental health disorders, including depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia.

Substance abuse is another factor that can contribute to mental health disorders. Substance abuse can lead to addiction, which can cause a range of mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, and psychosis.

To address the real causes of mental health disorders, it is vital to provide individuals with access to mental health resources and support. This may include therapy, medication, support groups, and other resources that can help individuals manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life.

It is also essential to educate the public about mental health disorders and break down the stigma surrounding them. This can be done through public awareness campaigns, advocacy efforts, and education programs in schools and workplaces.

Breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health disorders is crucial to improving the lives of individuals living with these conditions. By addressing the real causes of mental health disorders and providing individuals with access to resources and support, we can help individuals manage their symptoms and live fulfilling lives.

“Experiencing trauma is one thing; experiencing your worst fear is another altogether,” says Miranda Nadeau, licensed psychologist. “When you believe your worst fear is coming true, the distress and overwhelm can be on another, more intense level even compared to trauma. Seeing our worst fear becoming a reality can shatter our sense of safety and stability.”

Mental health professionals say even just thinking your worst fear is coming true is traumatic, and therapy and mindfulness can help cope in situations like these.

Prince Harry, Meghan, cars and paparazzi fears

Harry has been very open about his mental health and the trauma he’s faced in the wake of his mother’s death. He’s also been actively litigious against tabloids for attacking him and Meghan in the press. But confronting what can feel like a threat to one’s safety is another endeavor altogether.

“When confronted with a perceived threat, like in Harry and Meghan’s experience, our brain activates the amygdala, which plays a significant role in processing fear and triggering the body’s stress response,” Nadeau says. “Research on the psychological consequences of traumatic events suggests that an appraisal of an event as one’s ‘worst fear’ leads to even higher levels of distress and more severe anxiety and depression than a trauma that wasn’t one’s worst fear.”

Such trauma may lead to intense worry in everyday life.

“If a person experienced a traumatic event firsthand or vicariously, they may struggle with anxiety, stress and intrusive thoughts about it reoccurring,” says Chase Cassine, licensed clinical social worker. “Because the trauma they witnessed or experienced serves as living proof that the worst case scenario can happen and could potentially be a sign that the traumatic event may happen again.”

‘A sense of impending doom’

Staring down your worst fear specifically may send sharp shivers down your spine. “It may lead to a deep sense of helplessness, despair and a loss of control,” Nadeau says. “You can also experience a sense of impending doom, restlessness, difficulty concentrating and even physical symptoms such as increased heart rate, sweating or trembling. These reactions are part of the body’s natural fight-or-flight response to perceived danger.”

No two people will react to trauma the same way. “Some people might avoid the fear, which might leave them inside, away from cars or heavy traffic, and away from the public,” says Shavonne Moore-Lobban, a licensed psychologist. Others may confront the fear in an effort to gain control.

“Sometimes, some people find the focus and strength needed to act accordingly and successfully navigate a precarious situation; think of a time you navigated a crisis with calm, courage and precision,” says Cecille Ahrens, a licensed clinical social worker. “It is a complex chemical process, however since our nature is to try to ‘survive’ a dangerous environment, we will do what we believe we need to do in order to protect ourselves.”

Trauma and the role therapy can play in healing

Therapy may be the right answer for some people who want to work through their trauma. While we can’t know what will happen in the future, we can prepare our minds and bodies to process anything that comes our way.

“The goal is to help the person be able to emotionally and psychologically ‘unpack,’ feel the emotions in a manageable way and put the event into perspective, one that is personally meaningful to the person and supportive to their healing and recovery,” Ahrens adds.

Nadeau notes no one-size-fits-all approach exists, and that self-care, too is a viable option, “like mindfulness meditation and restorative yoga, or engaging and activating practices, like physical movement and hobbies that bring you joy.”

Harry himself has previously discussed using EMDR to cope flying into London (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing), a popular tool therapists use to help patients dealing with trauma.

Talking about feelings is an important first step; the trauma won’t heal overnight.

“Healing and moving forward after your worst fear is realized takes time and patience,” Nadeau says. “It’s essential to be compassionate with yourself throughout the process and allow yourself to grieve, heal and rebuild at your own pace.”

More on Prince Harry, Duchess Meghan

The backstoryPrince Harry, Duchess Meghan say they were in ‘near catastrophic’ car chase with paparazzi

What to know:What actually happened during Prince Harry and Meghan’s ‘car chase’?

SPOILER ALERT: This post discusses the events of season 2, episode 7 of Yellowjackets. Buzz buzz.

Yellowjackets is a show about many things: teenage girlhood, cannibalism, survival, soccer, murder. Showtime’s horror mystery series tracks the trauma of its teen plane crash survivors both in the wilderness and, 25 years later, in middle age. So much of Yellowjackets focuses on themes of arrested development, and how the Yellowjackets are unable to move on from the horrors they experienced. While these women have been out of the woods for decades, that dark, destructive wildness still beats just below the surface. And it influences every aspect of their lives, most notably their parenting.

Nowhere is this more evident than in Shauna Sadecki (Melanie Lynskey). The last few episodes have focused on teen Shauna’s (Sophie Nélisse) pregnancy and the stillbirth of her son. Episode 7, “Burial”, tracks Shauna’s grief over the loss of her baby. When adult Shauna arrives at Lottie’s self-help compound, she selects “self care” as a treatment. Hoping for a massage or a mud bath, she is entrusted with the care of a baby goat named Bruce. Shauna is annoyed by the task, fully expecting a cruel bait-and-switch. She thinks that Lottie is toying with her, forcing her to take care of Bruce, only to slaughter him at the end of the day.

It’s an unsurprising assumption from the team’s resident butcher, but it speaks volumes about Shauna’s approach to parenting. The farmhand told her that the goat’s care is entwined with her own. But for Shauna, the act of caring is inextricably entwined with grief and violence. Loving something so much is forever tainted by the pain and loss she experienced when her son died. No wonder she struggles to connect with her daughter.

When Lottie tells her that no one expects her to murder the goat, something cracks wide open inside Shauna. “Wait, really, I don’t?”, Shauna responds, her voice breaking and tears coming to her eyes. “I’ve always kept my daughter, you know Callie, at arm’s length out of fear that she would die, I guess, or maybe that she was never even real to begin with,” she confesses to Lottie. ‘I tried to tell myself that it’s okay, that I’m safe to think of her as mine, you know, and to just be her mom … but I think something is broken, Lottie. I just can’t do it.”

In season 2, episode 6, Shauna confesses as much to the police. “I never wanted to be a mom. In fact, I did not start out a bad person, but in case you haven’t noticed, life doesn’t tend to turn out the way you think it will. You have a kid that you don’t want to save a marriage that you got into out of guilt and shame, and you just, you can’t really let yourself love either of them. But of course, you do, you love them despite yourself. You’re just incredibly bad at it.”

Shauna’s traumatic birth in the wilderness directly informs her present day parenting with Callie (Sarah Desjardins). It also reveals a universal truth about parenting. For so many of us, parenting is filled with expectation, with the promise of righting the perceived wrongs in our own childhood. “I’ll never do that to my kids,” we think to ourselves. But parenting forces us to revisit our own trauma, our own childhood pain, confusion, and fear. Raising a kid can feel like opening a fucked up up advent calendar, where each day uncovers some new forgotten pain or sore spot in your psyche. It’s an emotional endurance test at every turn.

These struggles can be emotionally devastating, especially in a society that constantly places unrealistic demands on mothers. And it’s deeply relatable to any parent who tries their best, despite feeling broken inside. Will Shauna be able to heal herself and her relationship with Callie? Will she be able to love her daughter a little less badly? I hope for both of their sakes she can. In the meantime, let’s offer kindness to our mothers and to ourselves, snuggle our goats, and invite some sunlight into our own dark wilderness.
