SALT LAKE CITY — Waking up to heavy rain on Monday morning, Christena Huntsman Durham knew it was a message from her late sister, Kathleen Huntsman, who died in 2010 from a drug overdose after battling a substance use disorder.

“When we checked her in right here in this building (the Huntsman Mental Health Institute), it was through the back doors. It was in secrecy and it was in shame,” said Durham, executive vice president of the Huntsman Foundation. “When she passed away, we could never put in her obituary what she died from because that doesn’t happen in families like ours. Because of the stigma and shame associated with mental health disorders, people are too afraid to get the help that they need.”

To her, the rain represented tears of joy from all those who lost their lives from mental health issues as she joined University of Utah leaders to break ground on the Utah Mental Health Translational Research Building, a facility dedicated to innovation in mental health research and clinical care, at the Huntsman Mental Health Institute.

The 185,000-square-foot, multistory building will have dedicated spaces for wet labs, dry labs, administration, outreach and education, along with housing the world’s only 7-Tesla MRI for neuroimaging dedicated to brain research and clinical innovations.

“Our students and faculty from across campus will work with our patients, with their families and with our community of Utah to tackle complex mental health issues,” said Dr. Mark Rapaport, CEO of the Huntsman Mental Health Institute. “Issues like the youth mental health crisis, suicide, substance use disorders and psychosis will be addressed in a comprehensive way.”

From 2019 to 2021, the age-adjusted suicide rate in Utah was 20.6 per 100,000 persons, with an average of 648 suicides per year. Utah had the 9th highest age-adjusted suicide rate in the U.S. in 2020, according to data from the Utah Department of Health and Human Services.

In 2020, suicide was the leading cause of death for Utahns ages 10-17 and 18-24. It was the second leading cause of death for ages 25-44 and the fifth leading cause of death for ages 45-64. Overall, suicide was the eighth-leading cause of death for Utahns, according to the department.

The research building will also be taking a novel approach to addressing mental health as the first institution in the nation to co-locate mental health researchers with experts in science, artificial intelligence, public policy, business and law.

Speaking at the groundbreaking, Utah State Senate President Stuart Adams said that the Utah Legislature has appropriated $90 million to fund the research building, with $65 million more coming from philanthropic funding.

University of Utah President Taylor Randall often says that the university’s goal is to be “a top-10 public institution with unsurpassed societal impact.” It’s the second part of that goal that is the most important to him.

“What it means is we have to take on this world’s largest problems at the moment. This has got to be one of those top three problems — mental health,” Randall said. “We have to come to this building to change the health care system so we actually deliver this to everybody where they need it. We have to talk about how we get these treatments into high schools, into those early ages where we know that many of these individuals are beginning to suffer for the first time.”

The back of a sweatshirt reading “Thank you for asking about my mental health!” at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Utah Mental Health Translational Research Building outside the Huntsman Mental Health Institute in Salt Lake City on Monday.
“It means we need to take these solutions to the homeless population. It means we need to take these solutions to the elderly populations that are at the end of their lives and struggling with the same challenges that all of us do. Today is the day that we not only break ground on this, but I think it’s the day that we take up this challenge and take it and double and triple and quadruple our efforts so that all of us can alleviate the suffering that’s occurring in many of our families,” Randall continued.

As far as his hopes for the research building, Randall said he wants to see a significant change in the way individuals with mental health issues are treated in Utah and beyond.

“You’ll point back to the Translational Research Building and say, ‘That intervention came from researchers in that building,'” Randall said. “We’re just so excited that the state and the Huntsman family came together to address one of the most pressing needs of our state.”

For Durham, she hopes that the research building will serve as a resource for mental health treatment similar to the Huntsman Cancer Institute.

“When people walk into a building to get help with their mental health, it’s like they’re going into the cancer institute and they will be greeted with love and no judgment, and that they won’t be as afraid of getting a mental health diagnosis,” Durham said. “To all of you doctors and researchers, you are going to show the world that we can change the world of mental health. We don’t need to be afraid of a diagnosis.”

A recent study examined whether highly sensitive people are affected more strongly by negative events only, or by both negative and positive events.

The paper, authored by Van Reyn et al., and published in the August 2023 issue of Social Psychological and Personality Science, is reviewed below.

The highly sensitive person and sensory processing sensitivity

What does it mean to be a highly sensitive person? Sensory processing sensitivity refers to individual differences in the perception of and response to stimuli (e.g., noise, light, touch).

Sensory processing sensitivity is considered a temperament or personality trait with four components:

Strong emotional reactions.

Deep processing of sensory data.

Enhanced awareness of environmental subtleties.

Great susceptibility to overstimulation.

The Highly Sensitive Person Scale, developed by Aron and Aron, is used to measure individual differences in environmental sensitivity. See Table 1. A high score is associated with greater sensitivity.

Source: Arash Emamzadeh (adapted from Aron and Aron, 1997)

An important question is whether highly sensitive people show greater reactivity only to negative stimuli (e.g., an invalidating childhood environment, abusive romantic relationship, hostile workplace) or positive stimuli as well (e.g., a loving family, supportive romantic partner).

That is what the study by Van Reyn et al. examined.

Investigating sensory processing sensitivity and positive/negative events

Sample: 239 Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) workers; 129 males, 108 females, and two non-binary; average age of 37 years old (ranging from 20 to 72 years); 86% American.

Participants were asked to complete an initial survey, plus 21 scheduled daily diaries.

Measures

Highly Sensitive Person Scale: 27 items; for example, “Are you easily overwhelmed by strong sensory input?” and “Do changes in your life shake you up?”

Daily life satisfaction: One item (“How satisfied were you with your life today?”)

Daily self-esteem: Degree of agreement with the item, “Today I had high self-esteem.”

Daily positive and negative affect: Level of agreement with 13 emotion items from the Affect Valuation Index (e.g., angry, enthusiastic, happy, lonely, relaxed).

Event appraisals: Eight items. For instance, “How threatening was the experience?”

Event descriptions and intensities: Participants’ descriptions and appraisals of the day’s most positive and negative events.

Sensory processing sensitivity and the influence of negative environments

The present research, the first ever longitudinal investigation of sensory processing sensitivity, found that increased sensitivity correlates “only with greater emotional reactivity to negative events.”

Specifically, those with high sensory processing sensitivity experienced more negative emotions and lower self-esteem, self-efficacy, and life satisfaction in “response to more subjectively intense negative events.”

They did not experience “greater benefits from more subjectively intense positive events, such as larger increases in positive affect or life satisfaction.”

This agrees with the diathesis-stress model—the theory that mental health problems result from a combination of negative life experiences and environments (stress) and specific biological vulnerabilities (diathesis).

That is why, when compared to another person who grew up in the same stressful and invalidating family context, a sensitive person is more likely to report elevated levels of anxiety and depression.

Source: StockSnap/Pixabay

Summary

Highly sensitive people tend to experience more frequent and intense negative emotions and lower well-being than others.

They report lower self-esteem, reduced life satisfaction, and are at a greater risk of developing mental health problems (e.g., anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder).

In fact, the majority of psychotherapy clients may have sensory processing sensitivities.

The reviewed study found that highly sensitive persons react strongly to negative events but do not benefit from more positive ones.

Given these findings, a potentially effective treatment for the highly sensitive may be mindfulness meditation and related interventions. Why? Because mindfulness practice may reduce negative emotions while increasing positive emotions.

Highly Sensitive Person Essential Reads

Mindfulness meditation for the highly sensitive person

Mindfulness means awareness of whatever one is experiencing. The quality of this awareness is important. It needs to be open, accepting, nonjudgmental, and focused on the here and the now. Potential benefits of mindfulness meditation include:

Here are some suggestions for highly sensitive people on how to meditate.

The National Football League (NFL) and the National Football League Players Association’s (NFLPA) Joint Pain Management Committee awarded Emory University a $200,000 grant to research and develop pain management solutions for highly competitive and professional athletes in June. The study began in July and is expected to last two years.

The project is led byand Emory University School of Medicine Department of Orthopaedics Associate Professor and Grady Memorial Hospital Chief of Orthopedics and Director of Surgical Informatics Mara Schenker.

Additionally, Christopher Wolf Crusade Founder and CEO Cammie Wolf Rice is helping lead this research. The nonprofit aims to address the opioid crisis by supporting clinical interventions, education and policies and has partnered with Emory in the past to train life care specialists.

The clinical trial will examine pain management strategies before and after surgeries beyond intense pain medication in elite professional athletes. This includes mindfulness-based intervention, which Giordano said could likely improve patient postoperative recovery.

Athletes outside the NFL will not be eligible as participants for the study because of the league’s direct involvement. However, Giordano said he believes NFL players will benefit from the study’s findings.

Rice said mindfulness-based intervention techniques can significantly help patients with the anxieties of pain and surgery.

“We use coaches for everything in our society,” Rice said. “And it’s now time to have a coach when you’re in a health crisis.”

Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing Assistant Professor Nicholas Giordano hopes that this research project will benefit NFL players and other athletes. Courtesy of Emory University

Schenker said she was glad that Emory could deliver a unique approach to this study.

“There are not a lot of behavioral-based people who are dedicated specifically to helping patients manage their pain, and it doesn’t really exist at any other institution across the country,” Schenker said. “They liked the approach that we were taking … and they put their faith in us.”

All study subjects are scheduled for surgery and most will likely be discharged with some sort of opioid-based medication. Christopher Wolf Crusade life care specialists will then introduce the subjects to additional treatments — specifically mindfulness and meditation interventions — and discuss opioid risk mitigation. Some patients will see the life care specialists in person, while others will attend telehealth appointments.

Giordano added that the study’s goal is for patients to feel confident that they can supplement their opioid medication with evidence-based mindfulness and meditation skills, therefore preventing chronic pain development and long-term opioid use.

“When they’re on the post-discharge side of surgery, they can start implementing these skills and really understand and recognize the symptoms of what’s manageable pain and what’s not so manageable and when they may need to reevaluate their relationship with their medications,” Giordano said.

Schenker noted that this study can help combat the opioid epidemic in the United States, which she called a “massive” problem.

The grant will mainly go toward research coordinators, life care specialists and participants, who all be compensated for their time in the study, according to Giordano. Over the two-year study, the goal is to recruit about 150 sports medicine patients and follow them out to three months after surgery.

Rice said she is honored that her organization will collaborate with Emory on this study to explore innovative pain management strategies with the NFL grant.

“It’s a unique and wonderful collaboration that a university at Emory’s size [is] partnering with a nonprofit in the community,” Rice said. “That’s what it takes is, really, innovation. And Emory does incredible research.”

Source: Image by Aritha from Pixabay

As I’ve discussed previously, conventional wisdom suggests that using social media promotes poor mental health, especially in teenagers. But there is good reason to question this idea. As more high-quality research becomes available, we can see room for nuance and see that social media is not consistently detrimental to everyone’s well-being.

A critical limitation in many existing studies on this topic is that they are cross-sectional. This means all variables are assessed only once, and at the same time. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing; it just means we don’t know how behavioral changes over time might be associated with changes in emotional variables. Longitudinal research helps us to better understand how change happens by measuring these variables repeatedly over a period of months or even years.

Longitudinal research is especially valuable in this case because some young people may use social media to alleviate distress, so we might observe that increases in depression or anxiety will predict increases in social media use, rather than the reverse. On the other hand, if the social media hypothesis is correct, then as teenagers spend more and more time online, this should be followed by decreased mental health (i.e., greater anxiety/depression). But that’s not what the data reveal.

What Researchers Found

A research team in Norway recently published a study in which they tracked young people aged 10-16, and assessed them every 2 years. Each time, the researchers interviewed participants about their behaviors online (e.g., posting photos, “liking,” or commenting on others’ posts), and they conducted clinical assessments of depression and anxiety with standardized psychiatric measures. The researchers found no evidence that increased social media use was followed by elevated anxiety or depression. This means that as these teenagers used more social media, their mental health did not change. These findings directly contradict the idea that social media use leads to poor psychological well-being.

The authors are careful to note that even though social media did not make teenagers feel worse, on average, it also did not make them feel better. So, social media use may not have an overall negative or positive effect for the average teenager. This idea is consistent with what I have argued previously, which is that social media use may have differential effects depending on the user’s initial motivations. When people are motivated to use social media because they find it interesting or rewarding, then it’s likelier to make them happy, whereas when they feel compelled or obligated to use it, then it’s likelier to make them feel worse. Motivations matter more than the technology itself.

The researchers also suggest that perhaps subgroups of teenagers may experience different outcomes following social media use, such as those who are bullied or have low self-esteem. The specific content that people view on social media may also play a role. It is also true that digital technologies change rapidly and we cannot assume that all future forms of social media will operate the same way psychologically. New applications have the potential to be better or worse than what people currently use.

Time Trend Data Are Inconclusive

Those who hold with the “social media hypothesis” of mental health will often point to time trend data as evidence. They argue that because social media use has risen in teenagers over the past 15 years, and that teen depression and anxiety has also risen over the same period of time, then those two trends are likely connected.

But if that were true, we ought to be able to observe this trend happening during teenagers’ lives. The fact is, we do not observe this pattern, and these null findings should make us skeptical about such claims. When researchers track teenagers’ mental health over a span of years, there is no link between their social media use and their experiences of depression or anxiety. In the words of the authors, “the frequency with which adolescents engage in behaviors like posting, liking, and commenting on others’ posts does not influence their risk for symptoms of depression and anxiety.”

It would be great to see more mainstream media coverage of studies like this, especially considering the widespread belief that if young people are permitted to use social media, their mental health will deteriorate. Perhaps parents of teenagers can take some comfort in the fact that for the average user, there is little risk of this.

While many people may have one of these habits in a minor form, for a smaller but still significant number of people the behavior can cause visual skin damage — such as bald patches, scars, sores and lesions — and affect their mental health, said Steffen Moritz, head of clinical neuropsychology in the department of psychiatry and psychotherapy at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf in Germany.

“Actually most people show one of these habits over their life span, especially nail-biting, to some degree, but all can become problematic when done excessively,” said Moritz, who is a former nail-biter.

“And a lot of these people also have (coexisting) problems, often as a consequence, because they are ashamed of their behavior,” he said. “They avoid intimacy, especially in trichotillomania (pulling out body hair) or in skin-picking, like not taking clothes off in front of their partner for example.”

While often misperceived as minor, these repetitive behaviors in some extreme cases can become life-threatening. Cases of sepsis, a severe reaction to an infection, have been linked to skin-picking. And hairpulling and eating have led to severe stomach problems with fatal complications.

Cognitive behavioral therapy, guided by a therapist, is regarded as the gold standard treatment for problematic BFRBs, Moritz noted, but a small, proof-of-concept trial, the results of which were published in the medical journal JAMA Dermatology on July 19, suggests a gentle self-help technique may have some benefit if a therapist is not an option right away.

Often shrouded in shame and secrecy, BFRBs should not be regarded as a form of self-mutilation, self-harm or self-hate, Moritz said. They’re more accurately understood as a way to calm and soothe the nervous system, particularly when under stress, to ease boredom or to vent strong emotions such as anger.

The habit replacement technique Moritz and his colleagues devised involves softly stroking your skin in a number of different ways: circling the index and middle finger, tapping the middle and index fingers against the thumb, crossing arms and stroking the forearms, circling fingertips on the palm of your other hand, among others. If you’re especially worried about picking skin, you can circle your clothes instead of touching your body directly.

Moritz said that other forms of habit replacement therapy tend to focus on a “freezing” movement, such as clenching your fist or sitting on your hands when you get the urge to reach for your hair or skin, but he wanted to introduce a benign self-soothing element.

In the study, Moritz recruited 268 people with BFRBs — include participants exhibiting skin-picking, trichotillomania, nail-biting, and lip- and cheek-biting behaviors — who were between ages 18 and 80. Half the group was given a manual describing the technique devised by Moritz and his team, while the others were told they were on a waitlist for the same program.

After six weeks, 54% of people in the group using the habit replacement techniques reported improvement on a scale devised to measure the severity of body-focused repetitive behavior compared with 20% in the control group. Nail-biters seemed to benefit more from the technique.

Stacy Nakell, a psychotherapist and clinical social worker specializing in treating BFRBs, said one of the strengths of the study was that the researchers had acknowledged the function of BFRBs as being about emotional regulation, and she thought the habit replacement technique could be helpful.

As Vail Health continues its expansion of behavioral health services and resources in Eagle County — including the pictured Precourt Healing Center — it is now adding research to its list.
Precourt in progress- July 2023

Vail Health announced this week that it is establishing the Vail Health Behavioral Health Innovation Center, a research-based entity focused on studying emerging and novel behavioral science in Eagle County.

Chris Lindley, Vail Health’s chief population officer, said the new innovation center follows the “collective impact” mindset the Eagle County community has had over the past six years in building Vail Health Behavioral Health.

“It’s been a collaborative effort; everybody is working together for the same outcome, which is improved mental health for our community, reduced substance abuse for our community,” Lindley said. “With this research collaborative, no one knows what the best treatment modality — or the combination of those treatments — will ultimately be. But we’re all open to studying those and trying those with our community and our partners to find the best care for all of our members.”

The organization named Dr. Charles (Chuck) Raison to lead the Innovation Center as its director.

While Mike and Mary Sue Shannon provided a donation to start the new research entity, it was also Mike Shannon — who previously served as the chair of Vail Health’s board of directors — who first connected Raison with Lindley and the Vail Health Behavioral Health team last year.

“None of this would have happened had it not been for Mike and Mary Sue Shannon. They made the connections, brought everybody together, and then there was an immediate synergy, thought and enthusiasm for what we wanted to do,” Lindley said. “They really were the lightning rod to get us going.”

Raison, who knew Mike Shannon through his research and work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said the initial idea was “that we could do something in the research space that was as remarkable, novel and cutting edge as what Chris and his crew had done for clinical mental health in the Vail area.”

The connection was immediate, Lindley and Raison agreed.

“I was so amazed by what they had done in terms of clinical care. I’d never seen anything like this vision of equitable community care and the openness to more holistic ways of treating people,” Raison said. “I was so inspired by what was going on out here that last summer when I came out for a visit, I said, ‘Man, if there’s any way I can be involved with this, this is unique.’”

Part of the synergy, Raison added, was that Lindley and his team were “interested in bringing some of these novel treatments into the valley and then also doing it in a way that would allow the development of really world-class, cutting-edge research.”

Rooted in innovation

Raison himself has a background in studying new and emerging treatments in the behavioral and mental health fields. He began his career in medicine at age 29, going to school to become a psychiatrist and then spending his first seven years running the psychiatric emergency room at UCLA.

Around that time, Raison said that through an interest in Tibetan Buddhism he became friends with the Dalai Lama’s sister, remarking, “it’s a long story for how that happened,” but that this drew his attention to the esoteric meditation practiced by the monks, which they did to “induce these crazily, positive moods.”

“It sounds very nerdy, but I got obsessed with what these guys were up to because these meditations were all about raising the body temperature,” he said. “So my research career actually started because I was obsessed with the question of: ‘What’s the relationship between mood and body temperature?’”

While he was never able to study those monks, the question did lead him down a path of researching new treatments for depression that were also rooted in ancient practices.

“I realized that I had a career where I was retrofitting ancient practices. If you think about meditation and heat — which is really saunas, sweat lodges — I was really looking at whether some of these ancient wisdom traditions really held any promise as novel treatments for depression,” Raison said. “In that context, I began to realize that sort of the ‘queen’ of the ancient practices were psychedelics, and they were just then beginning to come into study in a serious way.”

This road led him to his most recent role as a professor of Human Ecology and Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with appointments in the School of Medicine and Public Health and the School of Human Ecology, as well as his recent research into assessing the psychedelic agent psilocybin as a novel treatment for major depression.

Delving into hypothermia and psychedelics in Vail

In this context, the first three research studies conducted by the Vail Health Behavioral Health Innovation Center will continue down this trajectory.

“All of them are novel treatments that are really, really based very strongly in emerging science, but that are not widely used in mental health in America, which is still very much about giving people an antidepressant pill very often,” Raison said.

Optimizing psilocybin

The center’s first study is being referred to as the Opt-In study, which is “designed to answer some really key questions in terms of how to optimally use psychedelics; things that the field doesn’t know yet,” Raison said.

The study will be conducted at Vail Health Behavioral Health’s Innovation Center and will assess the use of psilocybin on depression and anxiety, assessing not only its impact on social behavior but also the risks and benefits of its use in a legal situation given Colorado’s recent legalization.

“The other piece that’s really important is, with these novel treatments, specifically psilocybin or psychedelics, is how do you do it safely and effectively,” Lindley said.

“People can take (psilocybin) in the state of Colorado now without fear of prosecution, but that’s not necessarily the appropriate way. And what we want to see is licensed clinicians administering the treatment in the most effective way, to bring about the most effective results. … So when we do use those new plant-based medicines, we do them as safely and effectively as we can for our community.”

With this, Raison said comes finding answers to questions like “Can we identify people who are likely to have a difficult experience? Can we help them through the experience better? Can we early on predict who’s going to do really well so that we can help support that?”

This study will likely be the first that the innovation center tackles, with the goal of starting hands-on research within the next six to eight months.

Cold, heat and depression

The center’s second study, which it hopes to have up and running in the next 12 months, will investigate the relationship between cold, heat and depression. It has been coined as the “Chill*d study,” which is an acronym for “cold and heat investigation to lower levels of depression.”

Raison said that heat or “hypothermia as we call it” has been “shown to have a really striking antidepressant effect.”

“It’s not new, people have been using saunas and sweat lodges for thousands of years, but it’s new as a treatment for depression,” he added.

“We’ve done studies showing that if you take people that are very depressed and put them in a machine that’s sort of like a fancy sauna and you really heat them up for a couple of hours, they will be way less depressed for weeks and weeks afterward. So we’re going to do that here,” Raison said.

This study will examine unanswered questions about the treatment, including whether adding elements of cold treatment will enhance the heat treatment’s antidepressant effects.

Following up

The center’s third study will be conducted at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and will supplement the local psilocybin research.

“We’re modulating how the psychedelic experience works to see if we can understand what is it about this psychedelic experience that produces such a long-term outcome,” Raison said. “So how is it that you take one pill and then you feel better for six months? How’s that possible? What is it doing that is so different than a regular antidepressant that you have to take every day?”

More innovation ahead

Starting with these ambitious studies, Raison commented is “aggressive, but we tend to be aggressive in terms of pushing things.”

“For a young organization, that’s a really good way to start, and it’ll keep us plenty busy,” Raison said.

However, looking to the future, the goal for the center is “to really expand this out and keep an eye out for opportunities to study other innovative treatments,” Raison said.

He said this could include studying things like substance abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder as well as preventative strategies.

The center is also working to have education opportunities, starting with a monthly lecture series called “Novel Strategies for Behavioral Health Innovation.” The series — which kicked off this week — will have Zoom lectures on the first Thursday of every month.

“We’ve kind of gone around and hand-picked some of the most interesting people in the country doing things that are relevant to what we want to do here,” Raison said, adding that this includes world leaders in psychedelics, the former heard of the National Institute of Mental Health and more.

This not only will serve as an opportunity for nurses, doctors, physician’s assistants, pharmacists and other providers to earn educational credits, but it will be open to the community as well.

Built with the Eagle County community in mind

The organization is looking to expand its offerings to better meet patient needs, including with new, emerging treatments.Madison Rahhal/Vail Daily Archive

While the Innovation Center and the bulk of its “cutting-edge studies” will be run in Eagle County out of the Edwards Community Health Campus, it also will have a large focus on collaboration, Raison said.

“This new Vail Health Behavioral Health Innovation Center is part of a consortium between the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Vail Health, but there’s other leading universities like Emory (University), that we brought in to do this. So we’re leveraging the top experts from around the country in the study of these novel treatments for mental illness,” he added.

Ultimately, the goal is to build “a really independent research institute” — similar to the Steadman Philippon Research Institute — with researchers located in the community.

“There’s so many opportunities, so much support from the community, and things move so quickly and so well here that it gives us an opportunity to do things that are very rigorous scientifically, but that are very, very difficult to do in large academic centers where there’s a lot of red tape and bureaucracy,” Raison said.

With that, the ultimate goal is to address patient needs in the local community.

Raison said that one of the main complaints with current research and academic studies in the field of psychiatry is that “people have these intense psychedelic experiences in a study,” are followed up with for a short period of time, but then are ultimately left alone by researchers.

“One of the fascinating things about our ability here is that when these studies come on board, for the people in the studies, it won’t just be over at the end of six weeks. These are people who will be able to access ongoing care here. Nobody has ever done that that I know of in a study. So that in itself is really highly novel,” Raison said.

What’s exciting about the research studies, Lindley added, is that “it’s right in line with the therapy that we already do today that is so effective.”

“It’s the individual working with a provider, talking about past experiences, feelings, emotions and really helping the patient understand that and find coping mechanisms and tools to be more successful day to day,” he said. “Psilocybin just makes that experience easier for the patient and gives them a different view of themselves, a different view of the problems.”

This means that after the research and study experience, “we fully expect all of our patients to continue to see their therapist. We always say we want people to go to their therapist more frequently than they go to their dentists,” he said.

With that, these new treatments and opportunities are meant to fill a need in the community.

“None of these novel treatments, as we described, are going to be the panacea and solve everything,” Lindley said. “But they’re new tools that will have positive effects on a percentage of the population. But the excitement for us, and what we hope for our community, is there’s new opportunities to help our community.”

The research studies will be open to anybody who qualifies, Lindley added.

“We want all of our community members to have the same access to all the different levels of care,” he said.

In addition to the center and its research increasing equitable access to these types of care, Raison added that it also meets patient needs in another way.

“If you look at our current treatments — antidepressant, psychotherapy — they help a percentage of people, but lots of people are left needing more. And so part of this research work is to actually test out some of these new treatments that we’ve been developing that show real promise and often in ways that are just profoundly helpful for people that have not been adequately helped by things like SSRIs or antidepressants.”

In this way, it also enhances what local providers can offer to their patients.

“We want to make sure our providers, which are the most critical element of our whole system, have access to the best tools, whatever those tools are,” Lindley said. “We’re very excited that there’s new tools that are becoming available, specifically the ones that Chuck is studying, that hopefully our providers will be able to use with our community members in the future.”

At the end of the day, the Vail Health Behavioral Health Innovation Center is seen as another instrument with which it can serve the behavioral and mental health needs of the local community.

“We’re very much focused on these new tools and optimizing current tools. But at the end of the day, we want people to be healthy and happy, right?” Lindley said. “To me, the most exciting part about all of this is we’re continuing to move back to whole person health; putting everything together and really optimizing the mind, body, spirit, all of that together for folks to live their best life. I think this is another step in that direction because you can’t really separate the two, they’re all connected and they impact each other every day.”

TOWN OF SAUKVILLE —The Riveredge Nature Center announced Thursday that it has begun working to increase mental wellness by training community members and service providers in a lifesaving Question, Persuade, Refer Suicide Prevention program, using funds from a four-year Washington County Behavioral Health grant awarded earlier this year.

The county Behavioral Health grants are funded through one-time federal American Rescue Plan Act funds. The Washington County Health & Humans Services Department made available approximately $2 million of ARPA funding to support the grants, which are dedicated to developing innovative approaches that expand access to behavioral health services related to mental health and substance abuse and provide resources for people experiencing behavioral health crises. The Riveredge Nature Center was one of 11 Washington County organizations that were chosen in March to receive the ARPA-funded grants to address mental health and substance abuse issues in the county.

Over the last month or two, Riveredge has been running its initial training sessions, which combine direct training and time spent outdoors, for its own staff, said Riveredge Executive Director John Rakowski. The training equips individuals with the tools to help people suffering from mental health crises or suicidal ideation. Recently, however, Riveredge has started its first community trainings.

“We just ran our first presentations with counselors from Camp Minikani,” Rakowski said. “These are adults and young adults who work with youth adults and youth on a regular basis.”

While still early in the roll-out of the training, Rakowski said that the goal is to reach as many community members as possible over the next four years.

The trainings

Riveredge Director of Development Sharon Cross runs the QPR Suicide Prevention training program. Cross said QPR provides participants with the tools to intervene when someone is experiencing a mental health crisis situation. The trainings begin with an instructional portion and end with a hike through nature.

Cross compares the QPR process — question, persuade, refer — to CPR that first responders use. It’s a method that research has proven works for suicide prevention, Cross said, but it can also be used in most mental health crisis situations.

The first step, questioning, involves asking someone if they are considering suicide.

“It can be a challenging, emotional question,” said Cross. “There’s a lot of taboo in our society that if you bring suicide up, you can put the idea in somebody’s head, but research has shown time and again that it’s not true.”

The next step, persuading, is about finding ways to convince or persuade the person that there is hope, Cross said. This step is about listening and building a human connection with the person, Cross said, not just trying to find immediate solutions.

The final step in the process involves referring the person to the right care provider and medical professional, said Cross.

“Just like with most people administering CPR, we’re not doctors,” Cross said. “But it’s about triaging the situation until we can get people to the right professionals.”

In Washington County, that means calling 211 to reach the Crisis Line, Cross said. Riveredge also provides trainees with a resource sheet for referring people to the most appropriate next steps.

Trainings end with a hike to allow participants to experience coping strategies like exposure to nature, social connection and physical activity, Cross said.

“Being out in nature can often provide spaces where people feel comfortable being open and honest,” Cross said. “I know with my past experiences as a camp counselor, I had many people open up to me on the trail or around a fire. On the other hand, outdoor activities can also be a coping skill. Implementing QPR can be challenging for the facilitator and the individual they are helping, so going outside can be beneficial to both.”

An investment

Rakowski said Riveredge wants to continue to train more staff, volunteers and community members over the duration of the four-year grant, making the training available not only to current and future organizational partners, but also to the wider community.

“Ultimately, the idea is that this training would alleviate calls to law enforcement and alleviate the amount of time people are disconnected from support systems,” Rakowski said. “It helps build a healthier community.”

Last year, Riveredge engaged over 40,000 community members from within and outside of Washington County through its various programs and events, according to Rakowski, who wants to leverage that impact and equip as many people as possible with tools to help themselves and others with mental health crises.

“I’m excited for this being a four-year investment that the community has made in the community,” Rakowski said. “We have ongoing mental health challenges that need ongoing care and attention. Coming out of COVID, we’re seeing this more and more. This is not a one-off. This is important to what we’re doing as an organization moving forward.”
