Americans statistically deal with mental illness/disorder more than any other high-income nation in the world. Almost one in four adults in the United States suffers from a mental illness of some kind, including anxiety, high stress, or depression. But as 50% of mental health issues are established by age 14-17, signs of mental illness are commonly exhibited in adolescents and teens.

Likewise, our mental health crisis has manifested in younger generations as more children in schools have exhibited discernible signs of mental illness. Aside from anxiety and depression, which are present in 4.4% and 9.4% in the child population, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and conduct disorder (CD) are all becoming increasingly common in adolescents and pre-teens.

Black students with mental illness are proportionally among the least likely to pursue and receive mental health services, along with Hispanic and Asian students.

Black children are more susceptible to depression, anxiety, and other challenges in maintaining mental health than non-Black peers, as issues are typically more persistent. Additionally, statistics report that suicide among Black youth is increasing at a faster rate than any other racial group at 36.6%. Among other causes, racism against Black children is attributable as a huge factor and cause of poor mental health. Black adolescents are also much less likely than their white peers to seek and find mental health care.

As mental illness and behavior disorders have the potential to derail students subjected to the typical classroom environment, educators have taken steps to adapt in order to provide the best support in achieving academic success. Across states such as California, Texas, Colorado, and Maryland, education has been made more accessible for students with obstacles in mental wellness either through the work of teachers or school boards.

Here in Dallas, Momentous School provides an educational space that emphasizes emotional understanding and social learning as much as it does the core curriculum to a student body that is 99.5% non-white. Breathing exercises, consistent testing to monitor progress, and highly-curated learning exercises are instrumented. Lessons crafted under the guidance of child psychologists and other professionals trained to work with students that need additional support or alternative learning structures. These concepts not only provide the best foundation for educational success, but for personal growth and development as well.

Momentous School’s implementation of Social-Emotional Learning runs deep and draws upon training usually only readily accessible in graduate schools. Students not only learn techniques to gain greater understanding and control of their behavior but learn about the brain itself. Thereby, teaching students not only how to communicate what they’re feeling but to understand why.

However, public schools within the Dallas Independent School District are not as fortunate as to have the comparatively vast funding of a private laboratory school. The staff has implemented some methods to promote mental wellness, but don’t necessarily provide as dynamic of a lesson plan as a school that requires tuition for enrollment.

“As a counselor I do my best. One thing I do is mentally check on each child every day at lunch,” Juanita MacFarlane at James Bowie Elementary School says. “Just by doing that I’ve caught a few kids that’ve needed help. As a counselor that’s what I do.” MacFarlane also explained that breathing exercises and stress management techniques have become more commonplace in classrooms since lockdown was lifted.

Counselors at Cedar Crest Elementary also confirm the integration of these methods, citing mental breaks, breathing exercises, and check-ins with students to maintain mental wellness among the student body. However, a student’s struggles are typically more personalized and emphasized within a specific child’s issues, helping them overcome these issues to attune to public mainline or special education rather than being directly accustomed to integrate these techniques in the curriculum’s design.

Mental Health Director of DISD Dr. Tracey Brown explains that counseling is one composite aspect of how mental health is addressed in more serious cases.

“We work with all our students directly to ensure that they’re mentally in good health,” Dr. Brown says. “We train our teachers and staff to recognize symptoms. At that point, we send them to counselors to determine the cause of those issues, whether that’s something at home or things just aren’t connecting in their understanding. We then get a referral from the counselor to receive help from our clinician on-staff and get parental consent to include them when coming up with solutions.”

These solutions can also include psychiatry or child therapy services. If at this point a student is qualified for specialized learning or needs additional attention, a child will be transferred to the appropriate classrooms within their school.

While accessibility to specialized learning for students struggling with behavioral issues arising from poor mental health is available for children attending public school, primary curricula with integration of more dynamic concepts is expectedly centralized to private institutions with more freedom and capital to experiment. As Texas public education does not enact initiatives – let alone allocate funding – for a more full-fledged approach, deeply comprehensive learning experiences for children struggling with depression, anxiety, or behavioral challenges remain more attainable for the middle and upper-class.

Mindfulness is becoming increasingly popular in many aspects of life, from personal growth to professional development.

NY, USA – July 25, 2023 —

Mindfulness is becoming increasingly popular in many aspects of life, from personal growth to professional development. Studies have shown that incorporating mindfulness into daily life can help us become more self-aware, reduce stress, and let go of any negative emotions or thoughts. In this article, we will explore what exactly mindfulness is, why it’s important, the different ways to practice it, and benefits of making it a habit. We will also look at some Grado-inspired products that can help you incorporate mindfulness into your life, as well as share some resources that can help you start your mindfulness journey.

Introduction

Mindfulness is a concept that has been around for centuries but has recently gained a lot of popularity in the western world. It is a concept that is based on being present in the moment, allowing you to be aware of your thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations in order to reduce stress and increase mental clarity. Mindfulness is important because it helps to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, and to improve overall well-being. It can also help to improve relationships, increase productivity, and reduce negative thinking.

Benefits of Mindfulness for Personal Development

Mindfulness is a great tool for personal development and can help to enhance the quality of life. It has been proven to improve the mental and physical health of those that practice it. With just a few minutes of mindfulness each day, you can make huge strides towards becoming a better version of yourself. The practice of mindfulness helps to reduce stress and increase feelings of inner peace, while also leading to more present, aware and connected living.

Benefits of Mindfulness for Professional Development

Mindfulness is becoming more widely embraced within the corporate world as more and more professionals recognize its numerous benefits for professional development. Mindfulness is the practice of being present in the moment and paying attention to your inner wisdom, thoughts, feelings and actions. It can help us to better manage stress and anxiety, and to create greater clarity and focus in our work. Practicing mindfulness can help us to identify our skills and strengths, enhance our interpersonal relationships and gain better perspective on our work.

How to Incorporate Mindfulness into Your Everyday Life

We all want to be mindful in our everyday lives but sometimes it can be difficult to achieve. There are a few simple steps that can help you incorporate mindfulness into your daily routine and help you lead a more mindful lifestyle. The first step to leading a mindful life is to take some time out of your day to focus solely on your breath. A few minutes of mindful breathing can help you clear your head and open your mind to the present moment. Additionally, being aware of your body can help you recognize the physical sensations that come with being mindful. Spend a few moments each day noticing tensions in your body and how you can use your breath to relax and calm yourself.

Another way to bring mindfulness into your daily life is to try to be aware of your thoughts. When you notice that your thoughts are causing you stress or taking you away from the present moment, take a deep breath or close your eyes and focus on the sensations in the present moment. In addition, be aware of how your thoughts and feelings effect your actions. If you find yourself feeling anxious or overwhelmed, take a step back and observe the emotions that are coming up. Understanding and accepting these emotions can help you approach any challenging situation with a sense of calmness and peace.

Different Ways to Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a great way to find inner peace and create a sense of balance in our lives. The practice of being present with your thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations can help us better understand our own experiences and the world around us.

There are many simple ways to practice mindfulness in our everyday lives. One popular form is meditation. This can be as simple as taking a few minutes each day to sit in a quiet place and focus on your own breathing. Others may prefer to use guided meditation, either with audio tapes or with an app. Guided meditation can be particularly useful if you’re new to the practice, or if you’re looking to gain greater insight into a specific issue.

It’s 10:45am on a Tuesday, and you are arriving late to work. You’ve just been to the dentist who berated you for grinding your teeth – she says this is what’s causing your sore jaw and neck.

You’ve been waking up between 2am and 4am most nights for the past month, and when you do, it’s hard to stop thinking about work. Your boss is becoming increasingly aggressive with you and you just can’t seem to focus. To make matters worse, your inner critic seems to be more vocal than usual.

This scenario, or variations on it, will be familiar to many people. Work stress may be particularly persistent for you if you’re younger and trying to make a good impression in your workplace.

Without discounting the value of discussing problems you’re having at work with relevant superiors, meditation practices can do a lot to help you manage your stress in situations like these.

Extensive research supports the positive effects of meditation techniques including mindfulness, attention-based meditations and meditations that cultivate compassion.

This article is part of Quarter Life, a series about issues affecting those of us in our twenties and thirties. From the challenges of beginning a career and taking care of our mental health, to the excitement of starting a family, adopting a pet or just making friends as an adult. The articles in this series explore the questions and bring answers as we navigate this turbulent period of life.

Want to start therapy, but not sure what type will be right for you? Here are four to consider

Trust is important if you want to succeed at work – here’s how to build it

1. Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the practice of observing your internal realities (thoughts, emotions, memories and sensations) and external realities (social and physical environment) in a nonjudgmental way. It has been shown to improve anxiety, stress, insomnia and pain, among others.

Cultivating awareness of your body regularly (an internal reality) can help catch negative physical symptoms early. For example, grinding teeth is often associated with tight muscles around the jaw, neck and shoulders. If you pay attention to your body, you can detect the early stages of stress-induced muscle tightening and consciously relax them.

A simple but effective mindfulness-based technique is the body scan. Spend some time each week (at least two minutes) bringing your awareness into the toes of both feet, slowly moving up your body, checking in as you go, until you reach the top of your head.

You can find thousands of guided body scans online, and you can use this technique anywhere, including at work.

2. Attention-based meditation

This practice usually involves using some kind of anchor to help maintain a central focus in the mind. Anchors can include the breath, a mantra or phrase such as “I am here now”, or an image, like a candle flame (real or digital). Each time you become distracted with a thought, memory, emotion, image or sensation (such as an itchy foot), return to the anchor.

You can practise this anywhere, with eyes open or closed. Start with 60 seconds twice daily and build from there. Don’t expect the mind to be quiet – it won’t be. Your job is to return to your chosen anchor.

Research has shown that practising meditation can improve emotional regulation, which may help you to better manage stressful situations at work and boost your focus. A study I did with colleagues found that an attention-based meditation programme reduced stress, anxiety and burnout in emergency medicine doctors compared with a control group that didn’t undergo the programme.

              Iryna Imago/Shutterstock

Using the breath in particular as an anchor can reduce stress by calming nerves associated with the fight or flight response, which takes charge when we’re anxious.

This technique can be especially useful if you’re having trouble sleeping. Equalising the breath (breathing five seconds in and five seconds out, for example) while practising attention-based meditation can help you disengage from cyclical thinking in the middle of the night and fall back to sleep.

3. Meditation to cultivate compassion

Our inner critic can become very vocal during times of stress. It’s useful to disengage from this voice using attention-based meditation. During difficult times, you should also cultivate compassion for yourself, as a person who makes mistakes (like every other human).

Find a quiet place and sit or lie down. Set a timer for two minutes. Close your eyes, equalise your breathing (five seconds in and five seconds out) and then try to picture your own face.

Physically smile at your face and imagine it smiling back at you. Wish yourself health and happiness. Realise that you are a human being who deserves love and respect. Your inner critic might disagree, but do your best to disengage from this voice.

Sometimes, this practice can also help us manage difficult emotions related to other people. Remember, your boss is likely to be just as vulnerable to stress as you. We can use this practice to conjure up their face, smile (physically and internally) and wish them health and happiness.

A word of caution: don’t try this for bullies or people who are abusive towards you. In extreme cases like these, we need to be careful not to provide internal excuses for people who cause us harm. Discuss this with a healthcare professional like a counsellor or psychotherapist first.

For maximum effect, you need to use the right tool for the right job. Some weeks, you might have to use all three tools on a daily basis. For calmer weeks, you could practise for two minutes on Mondays and Fridays, checking in with your body and mind to make sure all is well.

Like any skill, the more you practise, the more proficient you will become. Most of all, be kind to yourself.

In today’s fast-paced and demanding world, stress has become a common companion for many people. The constant pressure to perform, meet deadlines, and juggle multiple responsibilities can take a toll on our mental and physical well-being. That’s why it’s crucial to find ways to achieve peace of mind and alleviate stress. One powerful method to achieve this is through mindfulness-based stress reduction techniques.

Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) is a practice that combines mindfulness meditation, body awareness, and yoga to help individuals become more aware of their thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations. By cultivating a non-judgmental and accepting attitude towards these experiences, MBSR allows individuals to reduce stress, increase self-awareness, and ultimately achieve a state of peace and calm.

Here are 20 mindfulness-based stress reduction techniques that can help you achieve peace of mind:

1. Mindful breathing: Take a moment to focus on your breath, observing its natural rhythm. This simple act can help bring your attention to the present moment and calm your mind.

2. Body scan meditation: Start from the top of your head and slowly move your attention down to each part of your body, noticing any sensations or tension. This technique helps you become more aware of your body and release physical stress.

3. Mindful eating: Pay attention to the taste, texture, and smell of your food. Eat slowly, savoring each bite, and fully engage your senses.

4. Walking meditation: Take a leisurely walk, paying attention to each step, the sensation of your feet touching the ground, and the surrounding environment.

5. Gratitude practice: Take a few moments each day to reflect on things you are grateful for. This practice can shift your focus from stressors to positive aspects of your life.

6. Loving-kindness meditation: Direct well-wishes and positive intentions towards yourself and others. This practice can cultivate compassion and reduce negative emotions.

7. Mindful journaling: Write down your thoughts and feelings without judgment. This practice allows you to process emotions and gain clarity.

8. Progressive muscle relaxation: Tense and relax each muscle group in your body, starting from your toes and moving upwards. This technique helps release physical tension.

9. Mindful listening: Pay full attention to the sounds around you, whether it’s music, nature, or the voices of loved ones. Really listen and immerse yourself in the experience.

10. Mindful showering: Bring your full attention to the sensations of water on your skin, the scent of soap, and the sound of running water. This practice can turn a mundane task into a meditative experience.

11. Mindful commuting: Instead of getting lost in thoughts or distractions, use your commute as an opportunity to be fully present. Observe the scenery, feel the movement of the vehicle, and be aware of your surroundings.

12. Mindful technology use: Set aside dedicated time to disconnect from screens and gadgets. Be fully present and engaged in activities without the constant interruption of notifications.

13. Mindful stretching: Incorporate gentle stretching exercises into your daily routine. Pay attention to the sensations in your muscles and the movement of your body.

14. Mindful listening to music: Choose calming or uplifting music and listen to it attentively. Allow yourself to be fully immersed in the sounds and let it soothe your mind.

15. Mindful appreciation: Take a moment each day to appreciate the beauty and wonder of the world around you. Notice the small details and find joy in them.

16. Mindful communication: Practice active listening and being fully present in conversations. Give your undivided attention to the person speaking, without interrupting or planning your response.

17. Mindful self-care: Prioritize self-care activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Engage in activities such as reading, taking a bath, or spending time in nature mindfully.

18. Mindful acceptance: Practice accepting yourself and your current circumstances without judgment. Recognize that not everything can be controlled and focus on what you can change.

19. Mindful forgiveness: Cultivate forgiveness towards yourself and others. Let go of past grievances and embrace a more compassionate outlook.

20. Mindful bedtime routine: Create a calming bedtime routine that helps you wind down and prepare for sleep. Avoid screens, engage in relaxation techniques, or read a book mindfully.

By incorporating these mindfulness-based stress reduction techniques into your daily life, you can achieve peace of mind and reduce stress levels. Remember, mindfulness is a practice that requires consistency and patience. Start with small steps and gradually increase your mindfulness practice. With time, you will experience the transformative power of mindfulness in reducing stress and enhancing your overall well-being.
In today’s fast-paced and chaotic world, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. We often find ourselves constantly multitasking, juggling multiple responsibilities, and rarely taking the time to pause and reflect. This is where mindfulness comes in.

Mindfulness is the practice of bringing one’s attention to the present moment, without judgment. It is about being fully aware of our thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations, and the world around us. By cultivating mindfulness, we can enhance our spiritual growth and deepen our connection with ourselves and the universe. Here are 20 mindfulness techniques that can help you embark on this transformative journey.

1. Meditation: Set aside a few minutes each day to sit in silence, focusing on your breath or a specific mantra. Meditation helps quiet the mind and allows us to tap into our inner wisdom.

2. Deep breathing: Take slow, deep breaths, paying attention to the sensation of the breath entering and leaving your body. Deep breathing calms the nervous system and helps us ground ourselves in the present moment.

3. Body scan: Close your eyes and slowly scan your body from head to toe, noticing any tension or discomfort. Bring your awareness to those areas and consciously release the tension.

4. Walking meditation: Take a leisurely walk in nature, paying attention to each step, the sensation of your feet touching the ground, and the sounds and smells around you.

5. Gratitude practice: Take a moment each day to reflect on what you are grateful for. This simple practice shifts our focus from what is lacking to what is abundant in our lives.

6. Mindful eating: Slow down and savor each bite of food. Pay attention to the flavors, textures, and smells. Eating mindfully can help us develop a healthier relationship with food.

7. Journaling: Write down your thoughts, feelings, and observations. Journaling allows us to gain insights into ourselves and our experiences.

8. Loving-kindness meditation: Sit in meditation and silently repeat phrases of love and kindness to yourself and others. This practice cultivates compassion and connection.

9. Mindful listening: When someone is speaking to you, give them your full attention. Put aside distractions and truly listen to what they are saying.

10. Mindful communication: Before speaking, pause and reflect on your words. Speak with intention and kindness, considering the impact your words may have on others.

11. Nature connection: Spend time in nature, observing its beauty and immersing yourself in its energy. Nature has a way of grounding us and reminding us of our interconnectedness.

12. Digital detox: Take regular breaks from screens and technology. Disconnecting allows us to be fully present and engage in activities that nourish our soul.

13. Mindful movement: Engage in activities like yoga, tai chi, or dance, where you focus on the sensations and movements of your body.

14. Mindful self-compassion: Treat yourself with kindness and compassion. Acknowledge your imperfections and mistakes without judgment.

15. Mindful walking: Take a slow walk, paying attention to each step, the feeling of your feet touching the ground, and the rhythm of your body in motion.

16. Mindful art: Engage in a creative activity like painting, drawing, or crafting. Focus on the process rather than the outcome, allowing your creativity to flow.

17. Mindful reading: Choose a book that resonates with your spiritual journey. Read slowly, allowing the words to sink in and reflect on how they relate to your own life.

18. Mindful music: Listen to music mindfully, paying attention to each note, melody, and rhythm. Allow the music to transport you to a place of peace and tranquility.

19. Mindful solitude: Spend time alone, away from distractions and noise. Use this time to connect with yourself, reflect, and recharge.

20. Mindful sleep: Create a bedtime ritual that promotes relaxation and restful sleep. Practice deep breathing or meditation before bed, and create a peaceful environment in your bedroom.

Incorporating these mindfulness techniques into your daily life can help you enhance your spiritual growth and deepen your connection with yourself and the world around you. Remember, spiritual growth is a lifelong journey, and mindfulness is a powerful tool to guide you along the way.
Unlock Your Potential with These 20 Mindfulness Techniques

In today’s fast-paced world, it can be challenging to find a moment of peace and clarity. Our minds are constantly bombarded with information, distractions, and stressors that can hinder our ability to reach our full potential. However, by incorporating mindfulness techniques into our daily lives, we can unlock our potential and tap into our true capabilities. Here are 20 mindfulness techniques that can help you harness your potential and live a more fulfilling life:

1. Meditation: Dedicate a few minutes each day to sit in silence and focus on your breath. This simple practice can help calm your mind and increase your self-awareness.

2. Deep breathing: Take a moment to pause and take a deep breath. By focusing on your breath, you can bring yourself back to the present moment and reduce stress.

3. Body scan: Close your eyes and mentally scan your body from head to toe. Notice any tension or discomfort, and consciously release it.

4. Mindful eating: Pay attention to the taste, texture, and smell of your food. Slow down and savor each bite, allowing yourself to fully experience the pleasure of eating.

5. Gratitude practice: Take a few minutes each day to reflect on what you are grateful for. This practice can shift your focus to the positive aspects of your life and increase feelings of contentment.

6. Walking in nature: Go for a walk in nature and pay attention to your surroundings. Notice the sounds, smells, and sights around you, allowing yourself to fully immerse in the present moment.

7. Visualization: Close your eyes and visualize yourself achieving your goals. By vividly imagining your success, you can enhance your motivation and belief in your abilities.

8. Journaling: Write down your thoughts and feelings in a journal. This practice can help you gain insights into your emotions and provide an outlet for self-reflection.

9. Mindful communication: When engaging in conversations, be fully present and listen attentively. Practice empathy and understanding, fostering deeper connections with others.

10. Gratitude journal: Keep a gratitude journal where you write down three things you are grateful for each day. This practice can shift your mindset towards positivity and increase overall life satisfaction.

11. Mindful technology use: Set boundaries with your technology use to avoid mindless scrolling. Instead, use your devices intentionally and mindfully.

12. Self-compassion: Treat yourself with kindness and understanding. Practice self-compassion by offering yourself the same support and empathy you would give to a close friend.

13. Mindful movement: Engage in activities such as yoga, tai chi, or walking meditation, where you focus on the sensations in your body as you move.

14. Mindful listening: Be fully present when someone is speaking to you. Avoid interrupting or formulating responses in your mind. Instead, listen attentively and respond with intention.

15. Mindful self-care: Prioritize self-care activities that nourish your mind, body, and soul. This can include taking baths, reading, practicing hobbies, or spending time in nature.

16. Digital detox: Take regular breaks from technology to recharge and reconnect with yourself. Unplugging can help reduce stress and improve overall well-being.

17. Mindful time management: Practice prioritizing and focusing on one task at a time. Avoid multitasking and give your full attention to each activity.

18. Loving-kindness meditation: Sit quietly and repeat phrases of loving-kindness towards yourself and others. This practice can foster feelings of compassion and empathy.

19. Mindful body awareness: Tune in to your body’s sensations and notice any areas of tension or discomfort. Practice gentle stretching or self-massage to release tension and promote relaxation.

20. Mindful bedtime routine: Establish a calming bedtime routine that includes activities like reading, journaling, or meditating. This can help you unwind and prepare for a restful night’s sleep.

Incorporating these mindfulness techniques into your daily life can help you unlock your potential and live a more fulfilling and purposeful life. Remember, it’s the small, consistent actions that lead to significant growth and transformation. Start with one or two techniques that resonate with you and gradually incorporate more as you build your mindfulness practice. Unlock your potential and embrace the present moment – your best self awaits!
