Self-awareness is the ultimate prerequisite for self-improvement and living a better life.

The thing is that we can’t really know how self-aware we are, objectively speaking.

We just have to do our best.

In this article, I share a list of what I think are great markers of good self-awareness.

It’s derived from a wide range of expert opinions from different fields and my own personal experience on my self-awareness journey.

Read on to find our the 14 signs that you’re becoming a more mindful and self-aware person.

1) You understand your emotions

Being emotionally self-aware means understanding what you’re feeling and the reason behind it. More importantly, it also means being able to control how you act on it.

This means that you’re also aware of your major emotional patterns. You may have identified things like:

Your love language;

Attachment style;

And trauma triggers.

Self-aware people don’t see emotions as a sign of weakness but rather as something normal and human—if not something beautiful and profound.

By doing so, they are able to completely understand their emotions. They can sit with them and analyze why they feel that way and how it might affect their actions.

As a result, their external awareness also increases, allowing them to develop better relationships with others.

2) You can analyze your thought processes

In the same vein, self-aware people can also analyze their thoughts. Self-awareness includes both the emotional and logical side of your mind.

You know, for example, how you learn the best as a student. It also includes knowing your biases or how you memorize information.

By being aware of these, you attempt to set aside your biases (while fully acknowledging that there’s no way you can do so completely) and arrive at the most objective conclusions possible.

3) You can control their thoughts and emotions

Because of the two points above, they are not at the mercy of their mental or emotional whims. Their thoughts and emotions don’t control them. Mindful and self-aware people get the hang of how they feel and what they think.

They understand that they are more than their thoughts and emotions. This is why they are not too bothered if they have an intrusive thought or feel a particularly strong emotion.

They are able to sit with them, process them, and move forward smoothly.

4) You think you’re not self-aware enough

Here’s that paradox I was talking about. People who think they know everything about themselves (or worse, about the world or other people) ironically tend to be the least self-aware.

Remember when you were 18 and thought that you understood how the world worked? It’s like they never grew out of that phase.

Humbly realizing that you always have room to grow will make you consistently chase self-improvement and self-awareness.

And that’s exactly how you become and stay self-aware.

5) You don’t think you’re special

Another thing 18-year-olds think is that they’re special. As you can probably guess, truly self-aware people definitely don’t believe this.

They don’t think they deserve special treatment or feel entitled to other people. They put in the effort to get the things they want and feel thankful when other people help them.

On the other hand, they also don’t think that they live the most miserable of lives.

They understand that they face their fair share of trauma or unfairness in their life, but they’re also able to see how they’re lucky or privileged.

This means their self-awareness includes understanding their place in the grander scheme of things.

6) You’re not afraid of looking “dumb”

We live in a world where we’re all so obsessed with looking intelligent and competent. We need it to…

…pass job interviews;

…woo people we date;

…impress our friends;

…and a whole host of other things. We feel the need to put up a front just to seem like we know what we’re doing at all times.

But you know what’s better than competence?

Authenticity. Sincerity. And, as mentioned above, the desire to always learn and grow.

So, if you ask that supposedly dumb question?

Maybe you feel a little embarrassed, but now you’ll know more, making you feel more confident than before.

7) You know your weaknesses

Self-aware folks are not afraid of looking dumb because they accept they’re not perfect.

They’re not afraid of putting themselves outside their comfort zone or making hard decisions.

They’re not afraid of failing or taking risks either.

After all, they know that this is precisely how you’re able to develop your weaknesses.

They’re mature enough not to beat themselves up for not being perfect.

And they fully accept and love themselves despite their flaws. And in fact, it’s because of this radical self-acceptance and self-love that they want to grow and improve.

8) You welcome criticism

Because mindful people know they’re imperfect, taking criticism is not a problem for them.

It’s still definitely hard (because, again, they’re human and embrace that they’re human), but they do their best not to get defensive about it.

Rather, they keep it in mind as they try to grow and become a better person. After all, what’s a better way of becoming self-aware than listening to how other people perceive you?

How do you know if criticism is constructive?

It’s worded respectfully and kindly;

It focuses on how you can improve rather than what you lack;

It encourages you to do better instead of quitting.

9) You willingly apologize

Similarly, self-aware people are also humble enough to take accountability for their actions.

They are mindful of their effect on others and adept at recognizing when they are in the wrong, too.

They readily admit when they make a mistake and wholeheartedly apologize for it.

And while you might say that saying sorry is basic decency, some studies suggest that it’s actually incredibly hard to do—especially if you screwed up in a big way.

After all, sincerely apologizing is crucial to both maintaining relationships and soliciting feedback. Both of these are important in maintaining a good level of self-awareness.

10) You live in the present

An often overlooked part of self-awareness is the ability to stay grounded in the present.

Think about it: If you’re constantly over-worrying about the future or thinking about things from the past, how can you be aware of the current situation around you?

After all, we can’t change the past, nor can we be truly sure of what the future brings no matter how hard we try to predict it. In fact, the best way to prepare for the future is to make the most out of the present!

Self-aware people are aware of this reality and are able to live life to the fullest because of it.

11) You know what you want in the future

Being present doesn’t mean that the most mindful of us do not care about the future. While they live in the present, they’re still forward-thinkers. They still have a vision of the future they want to achieve.

They are sure and aware of the following:

Personal values they have;

Goals they want to achieve;

Limitations they have to work with;

The opportunities present.

Then, they craft a specific vision of the future that is aligned with these factors.

After all, while thinking too much about the future is unproductive—if not counterproductive—not thinking about it all leaves you directionless.

12) You know your values but still respect other people’s opinions

A mature and self-aware person will acknowledge and respect other people’s opinions. But this doesn’t mean that they will always be willing to compromise.

After all, while they seek to listen to other people’s perspectives to expand their knowledge of the world, they still think critically about them as well.

This is because they are sure of their own values and beliefs. While they know the importance of being open-minded, they also believe in the phrase, “Don’t be so open-minded that your brain falls out.”

Being able to empathize with other people’s viewpoints while still staying strong to your values is a hallmark of maturity.

13) You value how they see yourself more than others’ opinions

Now, it’s important to note that there is a difference between being aware of what other people think and valuing it more than how you see yourself.

As said above, it’s important to be open-minded to what other people think.

But being overly worried about what other people think (to the point of constantly molding yourself to the demands of others) is not self-awareness!

In fact, if you’re hyper-aware of other people, you’re probably not aware enough of yourself.

Remember that you only have a limited amount of focus and mental energy. If you choose to devote most of it to fulfilling other people’s desires of you, you’ll lose track of your own identity.

14) You accept the reality that you may not achieve all your dreams

But they still go for them anyway!

It’s just how self-aware people accept that they’ll never achieve perfect self-awareness but still strive for it anyway (and that’s how they become self-aware).

Maturing includes realizing that you will likely never achieve all your dreams. Or its full extent.

As they say: Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.

So sure, maybe you won’t be as big of an author as JK Rowling or George R.R. Martin. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have your book published and make its own fair share of waves.

To sum up

Cultivating self-awareness is a neverending process. It’s not a one-time thing where you can suddenly gain self-awareness, and you’ll stay self-aware for life.

It’s a process that is crucial to living a fulfilled, meaningful life.

So now, after reading this article, take the time to reflect on what you’ve read and kickstart (or continue!) your journey to becoming a more mindful, self-aware person.

Author Tre’ Bohannon at a You’re Worth It! Book Signing

Tre’ Bohannon achieves a remarkable feat as his self-empowerment book “You’re Worth It!” takes center stage within the virtual realm of NBA 2K24’s “The City.”

I am extremely grateful to not only have my book in the game but to have it in the same game that centers around my favorite athlete of all time – Kobe Bryant!”

— Tre’ Bohannon

DALLAS, TEXAS, UNITED STATES, September 10, 2023/EINPresswire.com/ — In a groundbreaking moment that bridges the worlds of literature and gaming, accomplished author Tre’ Bohannon achieves a remarkable feat as his self-empowerment book “You’re Worth It!” takes center stage within the virtual realm of NBA 2K24’s “The City.”

Hailing from Desoto, Texas, Tre’ Bohannon has etched his name as a versatile talent – a Georgetown University graduate, author, mentor, and board member for Illuminate STEM. However, his journey hasn’t been all smooth sailing. Having struggled and battled depression himself, he knows exactly what it’s like to feel lost in life and at his lowest point.

Upon beating his depression and finding true happiness, Tre’ Bohannon wanted a way to share his mistakes and lessons so that others could also live happier, more confident lives. In less than a year and a half, he penned “You’re Worth It!” – a self-empowerment masterpiece that delves into personal growth, battling depression and anxiety, and nurturing a positive mindset. Tre”s words resonated powerfully, earning the book Amazon’s #1 New Release status across several vital categories, including Young Adult Depression & Mental Health.

However, the story doesn’t end there. Tre’ Bohannon is now set to achieve an extraordinary milestone by becoming the first author to have his book featured in the realm of gaming. In a special “easter egg” addition within NBA 2K24’s virtual metropolis, “The City,” players will stumble upon Tre”s book, “You’re Worth It!” – a beacon of inspiration nestled amidst the digital landscape.

“I’m really excited to see ‘You’re Worth It!’ in NBA 2K24,” Tre’ Bohannon shared. “I always do my best to lead with gratitude, and I am extremely grateful to not only have my book in the game but to have it in the same game that centers around my favorite athlete of all time – Kobe Bryant!”

Tre’ Bohannon’s presence in the game doesn’t stop there – within the gaming world, he holds the role of Head Coach of the All-Time Dallas Mavericks and also appears as other NPCs (non-playable characters) randomly generated throughout “The City”.

As a game-changing author, Tre’ Bohannon continues to spark positive change and uplift and empower individuals of all walks of life. His inclusion in NBA 2K24 cements his status as a trailblazer in merging literature with cutting-edge digital experiences.

Compatibility is something we often hear about. Yet, we often find out too late that the man or woman of our dreams isn’t that compatible with us in real life.

During the honeymoon phase, we’re all too happy to gloss over any potential red flags. But sooner or later, they come to bite us in the ass.

So keep reading to learn more about what traits your relationship needs to have for you to be compatible.

1) Effective communication

Let’s start with communication. Effective communication goes beyond just talking. It involves active listening, understanding each other’s perspectives, and expressing thoughts and feelings clearly.

It’s all about creating an environment where both of you feel safe to share your thoughts without fear of judgment.

For instance, I had a small issue with my lunges last year, so every time I cough now, more than a year later, my wife gets worried.

Does it annoy me that each time I cough lightly, she looks worried and asks me whether I’m okay? Definitely!

Mind you, this could happen half a dozen times per day!

But I don’t hide it or any other condition I may have. I appreciate her concern, and I know that she’s only worried about me.

2) Trust

Trust is the cornerstone of any strong relationship. It’s built through consistent honesty, transparency, and following through on commitments.

Trust also means having faith in your partner’s intentions and believing in their words and actions.

If your relationship is based on trust, you’re definitely compatible together. That being said, you can have all the trust in the world, but if you lack respect for each other, or it’s only one-sided, you’re in trouble.

3) Respect

Respect is all about recognizing your partner’s individuality, opinions, and boundaries. It means you’re treating each other with kindness, valuing differences, and never belittling or demeaning one another.

I’ve been learning that from the day I was born. My parents always had a lot of respect for each other and for others.

That’s why I always try to utilize the Golden Rule in any interaction with other people or my wife.

Simply treat others the way you want to be treated.

4) Shared values and goals

While differences can enrich a relationship or even marriage, having shared values helps create a sense of common ground.

The values I’m talking about are family, finances, religion, or lifestyle choices. Life is much easier when both partners are on the same page with these, I’d even call them issues.

The same goes for goals and aspirations.

Discuss and plan for your shared goals. It could be saving for a dream vacation, starting a family, or pursuing a joint business venture. Achieving these goals together will deepen your partnership.

5) Similar interests

Apart from shared values and goals, shared interests and hobbies provide avenues for bonding, collaboration, and making memories together.

Engaging in activities you both enjoy results in a sense of excitement and connection.

For my wife and me, that’s hiking and climbing mountains. There’s nothing that connects you more than simply trying to survive at some moments.

For example, in the beginning, we went to hike up a tall mountain on an empty stomach and a hot day.

We obviously didn’t know what we were doing, but we climbed it in four hours and hiked back down in another three.

Needless to say, that was one of the most challenging days in our lives, and it brought us more together than anything else.

6) Empathy

Another key ingredient of every relationship is empathy. If you can’t put yourself in your partner’s shoes, how can you understand their emotions and offer support?

It requires active listening and responding with care, even if you don’t personally feel the same way.

So, let me ask you: does your relationship revolve around understanding and compassion? If so, you’re certainly compatible with each other.

7) Compromise

Every healthy relationship has compromise at the top of the pyramid. That’s because relationships involve two unique individuals with their own preferences and opinions.

When you compromise, you find a middle ground when disagreements occur, showing that the relationship is more important than “being right.”

Still, many people always have to be right, and it’s tough to come to an agreement with them.

When you’re in a relationship with such a person, you can throw compatibility out the window.

8) Random acts of kindness

Tell me honestly, how often do you surprise your partner with gestures that make their day brighter?

It could be making their morning coffee, writing a heartfelt letter, or surprising them with a small gift.

If you two do this regularly for each other, then yes, you’re definitely compatible. You also have a strong bond and do things for each other without expecting anything in return.

9) Supporting individual passions

Apart from shared goals and activities, individual passions are also important for any healthy relationship. They also decrease dependence on the other partner.

Compatible couples encourage and actively engage in their partner’s personal passions.

They attend their events, offer help when needed, and celebrate their achievements as if they were their own.

10) Personal development together

Having individual passions and aspirations is good. But what’s even better for the health of the relationship is pursuing personal development as a team.

Couples who read self-help books together, attend workshops, or set joint goals for personal growth are on a shared journey that strengthens their connection.

My wife and I were brought closer together when we started learning Portuguese. We attended classes, did homework, and practiced speaking together.

11) Silent understanding

Over time, partners develop a non-verbal language that only the two of them understand. A shared glance, a certain smile, or a gentle touch speak volumes without saying a word.

No relationship is complete without this. And if you notice this non-verbal communication between you two, it’s one of the signs of compatibility, especially when coupled with others on this list.

12) Date nights

Ask any long-lasting couple, and they’ll tell you that date nights were incredibly important in maintaining their relationship fresh and engaging.

Indeed, regularly scheduling date nights helps maintain the romance. These nights allow you to focus on each other, reminisce about your journey, and create new memories.

Many people set them aside when they get kids because they need to find (and pay) a reliable nanny and are otherwise very busy in their everyday lives.

But, of course, that’s a big mistake that can cost them their marriage.

13) Creating traditions

Founding traditions is another indicator of compatibility. They provide a sense of stability and shared experiences.

It could be as simple as a yearly camping trip, a holiday tradition, or even a special way of celebrating your anniversary.

Whatever it is, make it memorable and something you’ll be looking forward to year after year.

14) Apologizing and forgiving

And lastly, there’s no talking about compatibility if one or both partners are unwilling to say sorry and make things right.

Conflict is natural, and being able to apologize and forgive is essential. If you as a couple are actively listening during disagreements, offer sincere apologies when necessary, and forgive with an open heart, you have a one-of-a-kind relationship.

Final thoughts

And there you have them, the 14 relationship traits and habits that show how much you’re compatible and how healthy your relationship or marriage are.

Although you can work on all of them and make them even better, a bigger indicator of compatibility is how your relationship performs “out of the box.”

In other words, the more of these traits and routines you have without the need to think about them or to improve them, the more compatible you are.

Can a relationship coach help you too?

If you want specific advice on your situation, it can be very helpful to speak to a relationship coach.

I know this from personal experience…

A few months ago, I reached out to Relationship Hero when I was going through a tough patch in my relationship. After being lost in my thoughts for so long, they gave me a unique insight into the dynamics of my relationship and how to get it back on track.

Life can feel like a dark forest with no path: you start out with enthusiasm and optimism but you find yourself lost.

If you’re feeling this way I can relate completely.

The key to lighting a torch in the darkness and finding a path starts with changing the habits you do and the things you find normal in your life.

Your journey to change your life lies in changing what you do every day.

Here are the top habits to kick in order to clarify where you want to go in life and how to get there.

1) Complaining

We all have the desire to complain sometimes.

I used to complain so much that I drove away friends and became known as a negative, toxic person.

In a way it was true.

It’s not that I was a die-hard pessimist or even all that weak, it’s that I became so focused on what I found unsatisfying and lacking in my life that I completely embraced the victim mentality.

This was a hard habit to break, but I find that every time I complain excessively I feel noticeably worse and more defeated and downtrodden by life.

Mentioning something unsatisfactory or unacceptable is perfectly fine, but complaining for the sake of emotional venting is generally very counterproductive.

This is a habit everyone should try to break: complain as little as possible, even when you really want to.

2) Catastrophizing

The next habit to drop is catastrophizing.

This is something I also used to do constantly: I would imagine the worst possible scenario or accident happening to myself or people I loved.

Granted this was part of a fairly serious anxiety disorder I was struggling with, but even for those who aren’t facing mental health concerns this remains a serious challenge.

Let’s be honest:

Horrible things can and do happen in life. It’s not bad to be at least aware of that.

But when you try to feel a sense of control by already pre-imagining everything that can go wrong you create a damaging feedback loop that keeps you in a constant state of fear.

3) Procrastinating

Procrastinating happens to almost everyone at some time or another.

But it can quickly become an actual habit, eating up hours and days of your life when you could be doing something productive – or at least enjoyable!

That’s the thing, procrastinating isn’t really the same as relaxing or enjoying yourself.

It’s more often clicking on another YouTube video you’re barely even interested in just to pass the time, or playing a video game because “why not?” even though you actually promised your girlfriend you’d clean the house earlier.

The result of this isn’t just that less gets done, it’s that you lose respect for yourself and stop believing your own promises.

As a result, you slowly start to feel more and more lost in life.

4) Neglecting yourself

In the opposite way that over-indulgence and vanity can become a bad habit, self-neglect is a serious issue.

This is often born from low self-esteem, but it can also be the kind of habit you carry on without even being conscious of it.

I have friends who rarely look after their appearance or style, for example, because they were taught from a young age that they aren’t valuable.

They absorbed certain lessers of low value, often from parents and peers, and as a result end up neglecting themselves and their needs.

5) Hiding yourself

The next unfortunate habit is when we learn to hide ourselves or try to downplay our needs, wants and beliefs.

“What, me? No I’m fine,” you tell your friend as he smokes next to you and gives you asthma.

Hiding your light under a bushel does yourself and others a disservice.

You’re not just undervaluing yourself, you’re also depriving others of all the talents and wonderful things you have to share.

Speak clearly, speak proud, be yourself!

This leads me to the next point…

6) People pleasing

People pleasing is a very sneaky habit that can creep up on you if you’re not careful.

None of us want to clash or have conflicts, but people pleasing crosses the line into considering our decisions and behavior based on how others will receive them rather than on what we truly want.

It’s OK to say no.

And it’s OK to disappoint people sometimes in order to do what’s necessary for your own life and in line with your own values.

7) Seeking validation

A counterpart to people-pleasing is seeking validation.

This is very common in more introverted people and can become a truly terrible and disempowering habit.

It’s important not to seek external validation or approval from other, because it makes you dependent and weakened.

Not only is your self-worth now depending on the next opinion you hear, you’re also potentially opening yourself to manipulators, egoists and bullies who can prey on this need of yours to benefit or take advantage of you in numerous ways.

8) Looking for completion in others

On a related note is the habit of looking for completion in others, especially in romantic partners.

I understand this urge and that it’s easy to say you’re well past it when you actually aren’t…

Being happy with somebody or falling in love with somebody is an amazing experience.

But it’s crucial to ensure you never hinge your self-worth or well-being on the love or approval you receive from another person, even a person you love and care for deeply.

Instead, try to develop yourself as fully as possible and think of romance as a meeting of two whole beings rather than two halves of a whole.

9) Fearing rejection

Rejection hurts. Psychologists have shown it’s connected to our survival system because in our ancestral past rejection was often the same (or worse) than death.

Being kicked out of the tribe or turned down for marriage wasn’t just sad, or a drag:

It potentially meant being cut off from actual food, water, physical protection and a future of any kind.

Rejection hurts no matter what you do. And it will happen in one form or another, whether it’s in friendships, relationships, business ties or family situations.

You can’t stop it from hurting, but it’s crucial not to fear it and not to ever believe that rejection defines your worth.

It doesn’t and it can’t.

10) Chasing drama

On the flipside of fearing rejection and wanting people-pleasing is addiction to drama.

This is surprisingly common, especially in today’s social media-mad age.

It’s true:

Drama, gossip, anger and confrontation can be entertaining.

But in the end it just leaves you feeling empty and wastes your time, especially once the drama circles around to you!

Then it’s not so fun anymore.

The solution is to avoid talking much about others or judging them. It tends to circle back around.

11) Buying into self-defeating narratives

We all have a script that we star in (or play a supporting role in).

That’s our story, our life as we know it.

Make sure that whatever starting setting and details you were given (your basic identity) doesn’t trap you in a cycle.

“Oh I’m just this random guy who grew up poor. I’m nothing.”

“I’m that girl who got bullied in high school, nobody really appreciates me.”

These experiences and painful narratives are real in the sense that they’re almost always based on real trauma and real struggle.

But choosing to continue believing them and cling to them damages you.

It sabotages every area of your life that you let it enter.

It’s crucial to write a new script or at least make major edits:

You’re the hero. You can do this. You will find love. You’re a great person.

This isn’t a mantra or some hokey self-help trick, this is your life. This is who you are and you know this.

12) Buying into overly idealistic narratives

On the flip side of being lost in fears of deficiency and abandonment is being lost in daydreams.

You can end up getting so used to believing in a perfect utopia that you miss the broken but worthwhile world around you.

Idealism can be great when it drives real action.

But it can also be quite divorced from reality and actually weaken your resolve, almost like a siren song leading you away from your goal.

Whether it’s love, finances, future goals or your spiritual journey, make sure you’re not just believing whatever happens to make you feel nice or give you a buzz.

Make sure it’s real.

Be careful of daydreaming and idealizing too much, because real life can pass you by!

Finding your way

Saying goodbye to the following habits will give you a big boost.

There’s no guarantee that everything will be smooth sailing, but that’s just the point:

Life’s already a challenge, don’t make it worse on yourself by engaging in the habits above.

Everyone has their struggles in life, but at least we can do our best to ensure that our struggles are meaningful and part of a path forward!

Life is hard, plain and simple. Yet, television is one of the greatest sources of relief when life feels unbearable. While it’s tempting to wrap yourself up in a blanket and find the darkest corner of your room to cry, a TV series might be a more positive alternative.

Try tuning into these 10 TV series to uplift your mood and bring a spark of joy into your life.

Abbott Elementary

If you think your life is hard, try being an elementary school teacher. In Quinta Brunson’s series, you’ll witness an honest portrayal of the struggles of educating a class of 20+ students. So whether you’re a teacher or work in a similar field, you can take comfort in knowing you’re not alone.

What makes this show so uplifting is the pure comedy and hope portrayed by the characters. The series displays a group of teachers who, amongst their personal and professional struggles, always support one another. At the end of each episode, no matter if kids were rioting or the ceiling was falling, the characters always walked out of school with their heads held high.

Catch this show on Hulu, Apple TV, and Prime Video.

2. Raven’s Home

I’m a huge fan of the show That’s So Raven. This Disney Channel original stars Raven-Symoné, a teenage psychic who’s always getting into unheard-of schemes. No matter how unpredictable things became in Raven’s life, she’s always humble enough to admit her faults yet confident to persevere.

The continuation of the earlier show is Raven’s Home. It brings a unique family dynamic to the screen. It shows the diversity of what a family unit could look like. Sometimes a family is a single mom and her kids. Other times it’s two single moms parenting their kids together, and other times a family of two divorced parents agreeing to co-parent.

The show balances supernatural, comedy, and real-life drama; catch it on Disney+.

3. Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is one of the shows I’ve watched repeatedly, and I continue to laugh at least once every episode.

With all the drama surrounding the police in the United States, it’s nice to see a heated topic displayed honestly yet humorously. The characters make audiences laugh with their antics and honest banter. In addition to their laughs, they remind us of the importance of friends and family. The squad is family, and they do whatever they can to protect their family.

Enjoy the non-stop laughs by streaming it on Hulu.

4. Girlfriends

I grew up watching Girlfriends. It was a time before I could fully understand all the jokes and the sexual innuendo. Yet I remember going back to the show weekly because it felt like I was looking into the future. I loved watching four successful Black women who were adults but didn’t have everything figured out. The one thing they did know was that their friendship was always a priority.

According to Buzzfeed.com, the show teaches us the importance of following your dreams; whether you’re a single mom like Maya or working an unfilling job like Joan, it’s never too late to pursue your dreams.

Keep up with the girls by watching the series on Netflix.

5. The Good Place

The Good Place is a show that exemplifies turning a bad situation into a positive one. When the characters realize they are stuck in a perpetual hell, they try to improve their situation. You see tremendous character growth amongst all the characters, reminding you that your past mistakes don’t define you.

You can enjoy this show by watching it on Hulu.

6. Harlem

When watching Harlem, I sometimes can’t believe how much drama the characters create for themselves. Whether kissing a married man, getting set up by their parents, or having an estranged ex-husband return, these girls don’t have a dull bone in their bodies.

Yet amongst the drama and fights, the four main characters are always there for one another. It’s a reminder of the power of friendship, and it’s okay to lean on your friends during hard times

To watch these wild adventures of four girls living in New York, catch the series on Amazon Prime.

7. Superstore

I always appreciate shows that take what may be a mundane aspect of life and turn it into pure comedy. I’ll admit that I didn’t think a show about an oversized grocery store would be entertaining. Yet the comedic script and the subtle romances have lifted my spirit on a bad day.

Superstore reminds you that life isn’t always fair and things don’t always go as planned. For instance, the main characters all started with hopes of completing college, yet they disappointingly ended up committing their time to working at a superstore. Through trial and error, they both pursued and achieved their dreams. It’s a great reminder that the journey to success isn’t always a smooth path, but you’ll never get to where you want to be if you give up.

You can binge this series on Hulu or Peacock Premium.

8. Living Single

Living Single is a binge-worthy show because it offers quality laughs and applicable life lessons.

With a cast of all Black actors, each character brings a rich backstory to the TV screen. There are so many ways this show can uplift your spirits, but the biggest dopamine hit is delivered through the show’s representation.

Queen Latifah plays one of the main characters. As Entertainment Weekly points out, although Queen Latifah is larger than the other characters, her identity isn’t tied to her body shape.

You see a thriving female business women live their best lives with a supportive group of friends — a great reminder that success is not dependent on how you look.

Tune into this series on Hulu, Max, Prime Video or Apple TV.

9. The Office

If the dry humor of The Office can’t cheer you up, nothing can. Since the series is filmed in the mundane setting of an office for a paper company, you become more drawn to the characters.

The show’s actors play people who are obnoxious, silly, weird, kind, and self-absorbed.

However, what’s most alluring about these characters is that they most likely mimic the behavior of someone in your life. Thus when you watch the show, you create a bond of understanding between you and the other characters.

In addition to all the laughs from the running jokes, the show is also a great way to get your romance fixed. Maybe you’re getting over a breakup or hoping to find love; the show will uplift your spirits and make you believe in love.

You can stream this show on Netflix, HBO Max, and Prime Video.

10. Insecure

Last but not least is the one show every Black girl needs: Issa Rae’s Insecure. Everything about this show is entertaining and funny, as well as authentic and honest.

TV shows are often used for escapism, a way to forget the troubles of your life and get lost in a fictional world. Insecure doesn’t offer that ticket out of reality. However, because Insecure is, as Movieweb.com mentions, “an honest portrayal of adulthood,” it provides a sense of comfort for viewers.

The show does not shy away from the problems of real life. There are no magical TV solutions. You see characters struggle and work hard to overcome their struggles, which can be empowering and motivating.

You can watch Insecure on HBO Max and Netflix.

You may wish that life happens in episodes, and in every new episode, things work out. Although real life isn’t television, TV shows can offer relief and encouragement when life becomes too intense.

Many people today are feeling a sense of isolation, lacking the social connection they desire or long for. And, for many people, this disconnect was exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Source: silviarita/Pixabay

In 2023, U.S. Surgeon General, Vivek Murthy, MD, published an 82-page advisory raising awareness about loneliness and isolation as a major threat to health and well-being and an urgent public health issue in the United States (Murthy, 2023). According to Murthy, research, even before the pandemic, shows that half of American adults reported feeling lonely.

In Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation, Murthy calls on people and organizations throughout the United States to respond to the loneliness epidemic:

By taking small steps every day to strengthen our relationships, and by supporting community efforts to rebuild social connection, we can rise to meet this moment together. We can build lives and communities that are healthier and happier.

Social connection has much more impact than we might realize. Higher social connection typically predicts better outcomes, including greater well-being, better physical and mental health, and stronger life satisfaction (Adams, 2023; Murthy, 2023; Holt-Lunstad, 2013). According to research, people who experience a greater sense of connection are less likely to die from chronic diseases (Holt-Lunstad, 2017; 2013).

It’s important to note that the benefits of social connection are not limited to romantic relationships—friendships, which can be developed at any age, and even brief, casual social interactions can strengthen well-being (Adams, 2023; Fredrickson, 2013).

While trends show that social networks are shrinking and measures of average time spent alone are increasing, social connection is shaped on many levels (Murthy, 2023). For example:

The individual,

Relationships (family, friendships),

Community (work, school, community organizations, health care, neighborhood, local business, social infrastructures, etc.), and

Societal norms (public policies, norms and values, historical inequities, technology and its use).

In addition, our social connections don’t stay the same. They can shift from childhood to adulthood to older adulthood, with life transitions, illness, relocations, and many other changes. It’s important to recognize, especially when we are feeling lonely, that the experience of loneliness can be transient, and there are ways we can connect with others. And, the distress of loneliness can be a strong motivator to reach out to others. If loneliness is chronic and causing difficulties, it can be helpful to consult with professionals as chronic isolation is a risk factor to psychological and physical health (Murthy, 2023).

What can you do to help reduce loneliness and experience more connection?

1. Expanding social relationships beyond your immediate group is linked with well-being and can prevent or reduce loneliness:

Reaching out to friends and acquaintances by phone, text, email, or in person.

Meeting or walking with a neighbor or co-worker.

Developing intergenerational friendships.

Mentoring or volunteering.

Interacting with community members, local merchants, neighbors, or passers-by while at the store or other public areas.

Joining clubs, spiritual or religious organizations, or arts or education groups, or taking classes.

Participating in community-based networks and centers, park district programs, and local resources.

Getting active in civic engagement or social action.

2. Accumulating evidence suggests that mindfulness can help reduce the impact of loneliness (Teoh, et al., 2021). Mindfulness skills can help you address the distress and negative emotions that may accompany loneliness. Evidence also indicates that mindfulness can improve the ability to monitor your experience in the present with greater acceptance (Lindsay et al., 2019). See the “References” section below for resources to help you strengthen your mindfulness skills.

3. Lastly, if loneliness, isolation, and related emotions feel like more than you can manage alone, consider reaching out to others. Dr. Murthy recommends reaching out for help during periods of struggle with isolation and loneliness to a family member, trusted friend, health care provider, counselor, therapist, or the 988 crisis line.

If you or someone you love is contemplating suicide, seek help immediately. For help 24/7, dial 988 for the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or reach out to the Crisis Text Line by texting TALK to 741741. To find a therapist near you, visit the Psychology Today Therapy Directory.

Should you take a day off for your mental health? If you do, should you be honest about it when informing your manager?

If you work for an organisation or in a team where you feel safe to discuss mental health challenges, you are fortunate.

Despite all the progress made in understanding and talking about mental health, stigma and prejudices are still prevalent enough to prevent many of us from willingly letting bosses and coworkers know when we are struggling.

Mental health challenges come in different forms. For some it will be a severe lifelong struggle. For many others the challenge will be periods of feeling overwhelmed by stress and needing a break.

Globally, the World Health Organisation estimates about 970 million people – about one in eight people – is suffering a mental disorder at any time, with anxiety-related disorders affecting about 380 million and depression about 360 million.

These numbers have jumped about 25% since 2019, a rise credited to the social isolation, economic hardship, health concerns and relationship strains associated with the pandemic.

But declining mental health is a longer-term trend, and it’s likely work demands have also played a role. Research identifies three main workplace contributors to mental ill-health: imbalanced job design when people have high job demand yet low job control, occupational uncertainty, and lack of value and respect.

This at least partly explains why depression and anxiety appear to be more prevalent in wealthy industrialised nations. In the United States, for example, it is estimated more than half of the population will experience a diagnosable mental disorder at some point during their lifetime.

Managerial attitudes changing slowly

For the modern workplace, therefore, mental health is increasingly part of the landscape. But preconceptions and prejudices are hard to shift. People with these challenges are still seen as weak, unstable or lacking competence.

These attitudes make it even harder for those with diagnosed mental health disorders to find meaningful work and progress in their careers.

Even when managers understand there are implicit biases against employees with mental health challenges, they may still not know what to do about it (file photo).

Business executives and managers, like the rest of the population, have limited knowledge of mental health issues, or skills to manage it in the workplace.

This blind spot is reflected in the management research literature. The best most recent study of managerial understanding of mental health issues dates from 2014. It found only about one in ten human resource professionals and managers felt very confident in supporting employees with mental health challenges.

Even when managers understand there are implicit biases against employees with mental health challenges, they may still not know what to do about it.

So it is hardly surprising many employees remain reluctant to disclose their mental challenges to colleagues and managers, fearing a lack of understanding and potential negative consequences to their careers. But keeping it secret and “soldiering on” can make mental health even worse.

Framing the conversation

So what to do about it? Our research shows leadership is key.

For all organisations, cultural change can start with leaders and managers speaking more openly about their own mental health challenges. This empowers others to follow suit.

Language choices are important too. How we talk about mental health can change how we think about it. Australia’s National Mental Health Commission, for example, refers to “mental health challenges” instead of “mental illness”. Such framing can help others to regard a mental health day as something that may be needed by anybody, not something for some who is “sick”.

For larger organisations, one innovative idea is to have “mental health advocates” – employees with personal experience of severe mental health challenges.

Energy Queensland, a government-owned utility with about 7,600 staff who are responsible for maintaining the state’s electricity distribution infrastructure, did this in 2017. Two of its workers, James Hill and Aaron McCann, now work as full-time “mental health lived experience advocates”. Hill previously worked for the corporation as an electrician and McCann as a lineworker. Both have lived through deep depression and suicidal thoughts.

Our research – which involved surveying more than 300 psychologists, psychiatrists and others employed in mental health services – suggests “lived experience” advocates encourage more open organisational cultures, helping to break down the stigma stopping others from admitting their own mental health challenges.

And a small number of organisations globally have introduced “wellness/wellbeing days” – an allotment of “no certificate required” days off, which can be used at any time, no questions asked.

As the challenge of squeezing greater productivity out of service sectors intensifies and competition for skills and talent escalates, those workplaces that acknowledge and accommodate the mental health stresses of modern life will be the ones with the competitive advantage.

Many high-achievers who have low self-worth fail to recognize they’re waging an internal battle.

When it comes to understanding yourself, here’s something everyone should know. Your self-concept contains two elements. The first is your view of your competencies. Do you see yourself as being good at a variety of skills?

The second aspect is your intrinsic self-worth. Do you feel as worthwhile as other people, independent of your skills? Do you feel like you have inherent self-worth as a human?

High achievers sometimes recognize their competencies and skills but don’t feel a sense of inherent self-worth that’s separate from those. They see their worth as contingent on their achievements.

Discover the subtle, sneaky signs of low self-worth.

You’re a high-achiever but…

1. You don’t see yourself as deserving of support.

You think you should be able to handle everything on your own. For example, you’re nervous about a medical appointment but think you should be able to go on your own, even if you’d like to ask a friend to go with you. Or, you think you should be a superwoman or man and not need help maintaining your home or garden, even though you work full-time. Or, you might think, “I should be able to succeed in my career without mentors.”

2. You think it’s reasonable for other people to make mistakes on the road to success, but not for you.

You expect yourself to be good at everything without practice or experience. You think this even in domains not central to your core expertise. For example, you think should be good at painting, even if you don’t have a history or an interest in arts or crafts. In your career, you don’t give yourself grace when you’re a beginner at something. You expect to be good at everything, right off the bat.

3. You find a way to recast other people’s mistakes as your mistakes.

For example, you get misdiagnosed by a doctor. Instead of thinking it was their fault, you think it was your fault for not picking a better doctor. Or, if someone whose job is to help or teach you isn’t doing that well, you think it’s your fault for not effectively extracting that from them.

4. It’s easier for you to think of what you haven’t achieved than what you have.

In today’s era of social media, our minds effortlessly wander into countless imagined lives we could be leading. It’s easy to imagine that on your weekends you could be renovating a derelict home you bought for $10,000, that you could be well on your way to visiting 100 countries, or that you could be body-building or becoming an expert carpenter on the side.

Do you often find yourself dwelling on the roads not taken, rather than appreciating the path you have chosen and the accomplishments you have achieved? Most of us can only work on one or two major goals at a time. Do you compare yourself to literally everybody else?

5. You feel embarrassed in situations that don’t warrant embarrassment.

For example, your child is sick or experiencing a challenge and you feel embarrassed by that. Or, a completely chance event happens to you, like getting pooped on by a bird, and that triggers embarrassed feelings rather than recognizing it could happen to anyone.

6. You’ve never really considered that your worth isn’t directly tied to your achievements.

Sometimes high-achievers so closely link their achievements with their worth that have never even considered that their intrinsic worth isn’t merely the total of their contributions. Corporate culture can reinforce this view with the concept of higher-and lower-value employees.

—

Did you relate to this profile? You may have noticed that the themes behind many of the points include being excessively independent and taking excessive self-responsibility. Even if you don’t relate to every point, if several feel familiar you may have low self-worth. Consider how recognizing your self-worth has the potential to reduce anxiety, alleviate problematic perfectionism, and decrease self-sabotaging behaviors.

For many Veterans, eating fast began with basic training. Consuming food has always been something you do to survive, and eating is a considerable aggravation for drill instructors given the short time frame to equip new troops. Digesting food fast during mealtime can last through your time in service. We must adapt and overcome.

Some of the effects of poor eating habits on your overall health

Consistently eating fast can have lasting effects on your overall health and well-being. Some of the short term effects include excessive bloating, elevated blood pressure, increased blood sugar levels and decreased nutrients to the body. Long-term effects include increased chances for obesity, metabolic syndrome, diabetes and gastritis.

According to Ann MacDonald at the Harvard Medical Blog, eating slower may help you feel full faster. “Scientists have known for some time that a full stomach is only part of what causes someone to feel satisfied after a meal. The brain must also receive a series of signals from digestive hormones secreted by the gastrointestinal tract. Research suggests that leptin amplifies the signals that enhance the feeling of fullness.

“Other research suggests that leptin also interacts with the neurotransmitter dopamine in the brain to produce a feeling of pleasure after eating. The theory is that by eating too quickly, people may not give this intricate hormonal cross-talk system enough time to work.” We know that modifying how you eat and slowing down when eating can prove challenging for those who served.

Benefits of Whole Health on food and drink and components of health

Whole Health strives to achieve the VA mission: “Honor America’s Veterans by providing exceptional health care that improves their health and well-being.” One component of Whole Health includes mindfulness and is every part of your health. Mindfulness uses the senses to pay attention to your likes and dislikes. Being aware of the food you eat urges you to focus on the smells, surfaces, flavors and tastes of food. You may then become more conscious of the food you are eating and be able to make better decisions with your choices. As a result, you may experience fewer episodes of binge eating, emotional eating and pleasure eating.

Practices to eat mindfully include using chopsticks, using your non-dominant hand, eating while sitting down and avoid watching a tv or media device. You can also try practicing gratitude for the meal, chew your food ten to fifteen times per bite, take a sip between bites, put proper portions on your plate and try to make the meal last at least twenty minutes.

Whole Health has a variety of additional services available to assist Veterans with reaching their goals in all aspects related to their health and well-being. In addition to mindfulness, Whole Health Coaching and Whole Health Partner support is also available, offering individual and group settings. Whole Health coaches and partners work with Veterans and employees to improve their well-being by making the lasting changes that align with their values so they can achieve behavioral change.

Services to assist in reaching your goals

Some offerings include “Taking Charge of My Life and Health” sessions, independent Whole Health coaching, healthy eating courses and tobacco cessation support. In addition to coaching and partner support, complimentary integrative health services assist Veterans in their journey toward healthier eating. Those additional services include nutrition resource support, I-Rest Meditation, Deeper Dive, Mindful Warrior and Self-Hypnosis. Other ancillary resources to guide you in living your best life include the MOVE! Program.

The Circle of Health is a visual picture of the Whole Health approach to care. This helps you explore connections between important aspects of your life and your health and well-being. Fill out your Personal Health Inventory, then share it with a trusted source, a friend, a health care provider or mental health clinician, and start living Whole Health today.
